It took almost 90 seconds to load the front page, thanks to the graphic ads...

There is only one advertising banner on the home page.

With that ad banner, the total size of the home page (including all graphics) is about 240KB. That is by no means a large page.

It sounds like you're on a rather slow dial up connection.

Every so often, the pages take a long time to load. (I'm on cable) I don't think it's the graphics.

My browser(s) (both Netscape & IE) tend to get a little hung-up while rotating the (actual) hero images in the left hand column.  I'm on a DSL.

It's not huge, but if that figure is accurate (I haven't checked) it indicates that the graphics could be substantially better optimised. Considering the limited palette, the basic image set (navigation, backgrounds etc.) shouldn't take more than about 40-50KB at the very most -- probably half that would be closer. Say another 15-25KB for the rotating character images, plus the banner ad, which shouldn't be bigger than about 30KB.

The biggest hit as far as file size go would be in the Genre Links section; the combination of tonal transitions and hard text edge contrasts would make it difficult to get them down to teensy-tiny sizes without losing image quality.

Edit -- for what it's worth, I saved a copy of the front page and optimised all the graphics shown -- the total file size, including .html and .js files dropped from 315KB to 100KB. Easy-peasy :)

I'd bet its the rotating CU images causing the trouble.  I use Netscape & IE versions 6, plus I have a personal Homepage loaded w/ graphix that never cause me (or other friends) problems.
But I'm just guessing.
