Success. Naturally they were in a completely different box. These are the sheets from the 1982 box set. I'll scan them in right now. I'll probably have to do a little bit of clean up, but that shouldn't take too long. Are people interested in the full sheet or just the outlines?

Just the templates should do nicely. I plan to Photoshop them then drop them into my character sheet pdfs.
BTW, I never did Red October pre-internet, but I did PBEM on Compuserve dial-up BBS. What's more, I first logged onto that service using my Texas Instruments 99/4A computer with a 1200 baud modem. I had a 300 baud, but it was tooooo sloooowww!!!

Absolutely! We still use them almost exclusively. I made TONS of copies of each of them long long ago, and they're still around. There were 4 males and 4 females, IIRC. One of the female poses has been lost to time, but I still have folders full of blanks for the rest of 'em.

Hexworld was a "game center", for lack of a better term, in Austin in the mid 80's. Not really a game store per se, more like a very small gaming convention, that was open every night of the week. You paid a small fee, they had snacks, a game library, big tables, chairs, etc. It was a bit of a clubhouse for the Austin Hero mafia, as well as the Steve Jackson crowd. A lot of GURPS and Hero playtests were done there.
Amongst the many games I played in there was based on "The Network" from Danger International, run by none other than Ray Greer.
And how about this for entry into the Old Farts Club
13. Playtest credit.
Fantasy Hero Companion II. Never even got my copy, though.

I too, have had a similar experience with d20 players. My sister will soon be joining my group which is strictly HERO only. I figure it this way.... I'm not in High School anymore, so I really only have time for one system. I'd also really not have to lug around 50 different books to each session on the off chance that I'll need to make some obscure reference.
That being said,...make mine HERO.

Amen brother! Reading all these posts about the dozens of different systems some people play, I can't fathom it. My co-GM and I have played exclusively HERO for 20 years. In fact, except for one-shots of Car Wars, the old TSR boxed space game (don't recall the name), and the 1st Edition of MSH, we went straight from D&D to Champions to HERO and never looked back. Playing those other games was like learning to play chess and then trying tiddly-winks. I have never felt the need to try different systems because we were able to do anything we wanted with it.
This has a lot to do with our main interest being superheroes (and our fondness for hugely intricate plotlines which leave no time to play anything else), but when we finally did do a Fantasy Hero campaign under 4th ed. it allowed us to create our own universe, magical system, etc. which no other game allowed you to do, as far as we knew. We just never needed anything else.
I guess I'm one of those rabid Hero types spoken of in other RPG forums... :D

The 1982 templates (included in the rulebook that came in the boxed set) are pretty cool. I just downloaded them from the Free Stuff section. But I've always preferred the original character sheets from 1st edition. Anyone remember those? Different poses (better style too, IMHO) and dashed lines around the head, wrists, belt, etc. They were great.
I've got a version of the original character sheet, but it was altered by my GM. Anyone have the pure originals?

Wow, thanks for bringing back the fun memories.
Let's see -- started in college with Villains & Vigilantes -- moved on when it became apparent that you could casually fall off a cliff by underestimating movement and have grenades dropped at your feet and be unable to react in any way.
Played Champions II, then III. Built my first character -- very poorly (my login name is my first character, yes, I admit it). Wondered why everything hurt so much (regeneration was WONDERFUL when it worked every recovery). Played in many campaigns -- some reaching nearly into modern times (that would be ... <wince> 15 years later). Also squeezed in some Danger International, a little Justice Inc, and then lots of Fantasy Hero (D&D's for wimps!). Managed to get a little playtest credit under my belt -- although I can't remember the name of the book.
***Here's a pop quiz for the Oldies: what book, with a set of Champions adventures in it, had the murder mystery set in Stronghold? (Hey, Tim!) I helped playtest it, advised the author, have two copies on my shelf, and I still can't remember the name. You know you're getting old, when....
Then, more fantasy campaigns using BBB and the old Fantasy Hero. Some super-heroes on the side.
And gosh -- we're up to 5th Ed!
Sigh -- now I just have to get our group to start playing Hero again, once we finish the 10 campaigns we have floating around.

That would be Champions Presents #2: "Murder in Stronghold", "MAVRIC" (featuring the crazed super A.I.), and King Cobra's "Coil" organization. Had a little paper insert with a listing of errata in the printed book.
