View Full Version : "HERO" System?

Just a quick and probably lame question, but why is the "HERO" commonly rendered in all capital letters? I don't believe it's an acronym of any kind, correct?

Maybe to distinguish it from the word hero which we toss around as shorthand for superhero? and possibly imitative of GURPS?
Just conjecture.

Yeah, I'm used to all-caps being acronymic. So what could HERO stand for?
Highly Efficient Rule Ordinances
Hybridized Evolutionary Revised Operations
Firk, that O is going to be a problem. C'mon folks, help me out here.

I've been doing it that way because it's how Steve Long always renders it. "HERO System" is written like that all the way through FREd.
It does grab your attention when you read it, though - I suppose it looks more HEROic.

I, myself, can only guess as to why it was originally rendered HERO... but it has been ever since I came onto the game back in 1992 and even further back than that.
Even back then, Fantasy HERO, Star HERO, and others had the HERO part in all caps. It does make for snazzy logos, so there's no complaints from my end of the deal.
It's important to remember, though, that HERO (when in all caps) refers to the roleplaying system itself. The company that produces the game, Hero Games, does not benefit from that distinction.
Curious. :D

I started writing it that way primarily to distinguish it from Hero (the company) and hero (a generic noun). No acronym intended. Though, as with FRED, people are certainly welcome to concoct an acronym for it.

Um, I'd really rather not see the use of "Hugely Expanded" around most roleplayers.
It wouldn't refer to the game. ;)

1. Steve likes symmetry.
2. Steve likes capital letters.
3. Steve does not like weird stuff.

as a HERO newbie and missed out on the 'naming' of FRED, put I put my vote for this one. Hey, why doesn't Steve or someone else gather the best and have a poll? :)

I agree. Derek's is the best. In my mind the winner has to have some reference to the enormity of the book... ;)

3. Steve does not like weird stuff. Well, I can see that I'm not going to be marketing my Chaos Theory setting to Hero. Imagine a group of heavily armed clowns (the PCs) escaping a pursuing band of werewolves by running past a cluster of fire hydrants, only to get caught in a firefight between two cults who look like one has been playing too much D&D (with real magic) and the other too much Paranoia (with real high-tech weapons), and you'll have a taste of it.... :D
