Just use the animal’s total cost in that situation. It certainly wouldn't be fair to make the character pay for more than he's gettin'.

With a minimum cost of 1, I'm sure. I don't want to see a guy with 100 songbirds (or some negative point animal) followers. :)

Well, sure -- the standard rule of "everything costs minimum of 1 point" applies. ;)
