You guys must be real good friends with the group doing Silver Age Sentinels. I just looked at my new Game trade magazine and just about died laughing. Good work and I hope they see it as funny as you do. I will have to show this to some of the other guys at the shop so they will have something to compare to the add SAS put out making fun of Champions.
Peace,
Bryan
The poor silver avenger looked kind of haggard glad you guys helped him out :)

Which *cough* isn't saying much. Just my opinion, but the first one didn't strike me as an adv I would be proud to attach to a product I love. It was too smarmy.

Right Derek. *wink wink* *nudge nudge* Who's secret ID?

Heroman doesn't wear a mask. I think HE revealed his secret identity.
Unless the Rule of Clark Kent applies to this situation...

It's good to see both companies get along well enough to take light-hearted jabs at each other.

It probably helps that they have a lot of customers in common. Plenty of people will pick up both games. (I know I have!) And, although I'm a loyal Hero guy, if somebody waved a magic wand and I was suddenly unable to play Hero anymore, SAS Tri-Stat would be one of the game systems on my very short list of possible replacements. It's a good system. :)

I can't see the link for some reason. Anyone else have this problem? I tried visited the GOO boards, but if the ads are there, I can't find them. Which, I know, might be a personal problem :), but if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks.

When the link comes up, theres a menu bar. on the second row of options, right about dead center in the list is an option marked 'ADS'.
Don't feel bad, it can be pretty hard to see.
Hope this helps.

Thanks to 'guardiansorder' and 'Syberdwarf2' for their help. The problem was at this end -- I run a popup killer, and it was apparently suppressing the links (I'm going to guess that's because the word 'ads' was in them). When I shut it down, I was able to see the links. This is the first time I've actually wanted to see an ad, so I didn't realize what the problem was right away.
Funny ads! Especially "Dad didn't like it either, 'cause he failed calculus!"

I noticed in the 2nd Heroman ad that Heroman addresses our wayward hero initially as Sentinel and then Guardian when he leaves...is this intentional? Am I not getting some "in-joke"?

The game Our Favorite Company is picking on is "Silver Age Sentinels " published by "The Guardians Of Order"
There's another hidden joke in there also.....
Sentinel refers to his team being an incoherent GOO. :D
Goo of course being the 'recognized' acronym for the Guardians Of Order

And what about that reference to the "fearsome five"? Perhaps a reference to a VIPER Five Team?

He also refers to the rules as being an "inconsistent goo". GOO stands for "Guardians of Order," so I wouldn't doubt it if the name change was *also* a reference to that.

I have no idea what you're talking about. It's just an unfortunate coincidence that I'm nowhere to be found when Heroman shows up. We're actually quite close friends, ever since I took those pictures of him that appeared in the Daily Hero. And the fact that my girlfriend thinks I'm weak and spineless while swooning over Heroman's dashing exploits, well, that doesn't really bother me at all... dw

Intentional or not, it reminds me a lot of Apple's 'switcher' campaign. Anyone else notice the similaritiy here?

I dunno, maybe I'm just being a dunderhead again but... isn't mentioning your competitor's name in advertisements considered a> poor form, b> free advertising for them (since no-small-part of advertising is just name recognition), and c> trite?
Do we have to be Coke & Pepsi? Can't we be mature enough to be Dr. Pepper and just talk about our own merits?

Make sure when you're drinking your Dr. Pepper that you put it in a bottle with a nipple on it.

that the two companies in question are buddies and are poking fun at each other, right? They also have the Champions vs. SAS thing going as part of a joint advertising campaign. How is that "trite" or "bad form"?
Certainly, it's advertising for the competitor. That's part of the Master Plan, I expect. If Coke and Pepsi were such friends, the world would be a better place.

These ads struck me as more a pooled resource kind of thing. That is, the ads each claim their system is better by comparison. That would allow the consumer, ultimately, to select the system he thinks is more in line with his style of play and preferences.
In the short term, both companies benefit, and in the long term, the company whose system wins the most adherents wins the prize.
Seems like a win for consumers, anyway.

One thought on the SAS ads, read number 2.
Read it again, take note who is being quoted
They are in essence saying that a 9 month old cannot understand Hero enough to play it but CAN understand there game...

I understand that the two companies are effectively friends and that in some ways this constitutes friendly joshing. That in no way changes my opinion that it's less than professional, and a poor advertising technique. But, as offered, maybe I'm just a dunderhead that takes my hobby a wee bit too seriously.

We're sorry you're unhappy with the ads, Emerged. Most of our fans have responded very positively to the idea that competitors in this industry can be friends and take humorous pokes at each other without being nasty. We bought six consecutive issues of advertising in Game Trade jointly with GoO and got a slightly reduced rate, and then just split them with the understanding we would use the space for funny and lighthearted digs at each other, similar to the sort of things one might hear if you sat next to us at a bar at a con. So the "free advertising for each other" part at least was entirely intentional. We think SAS is a good product and the second-best system for superheroes out there.
Funny story: when we gave the art specs to Storn for ad #2, we told him to draw Mark wearing something "similar to Sentinel's costume." Unfortunately, we weren't very clear, and when we got the ad back we saw Mark wearing Sentinel's costume *exactly*, something we hadn't asked GoO for permission to do. We hurriedly called them, explained what had happened and sheepishly asked them for permission (which they kindly granted), and the ensuing conversation resulted in the fake legal copy that may be too small to read in the version on our site, but which you can clearly see in the actual ad: "Hero Games has no permission to use Sentinel's costume, but we think we could whoop 'em." ;) dw

I think it's great you guys can be friends, Darren. I especially like the idea that you shared advertising costs.
Still, forgive me for being a curmudgeon. I'm sure they've had a popular response -- but I'd almost be willing to bet that response is coming mostly from "the converted", ala the Apple Switch advs.
