View Full Version : Can't get to the download page!

Friday I bought 10 credits to catch up my Digital Hero collection. I already have the first and most recent copies; I'm just wanting to fill in the gap.

For some reason, I can't get to the page to download. It worked fine Sunday (though my subscription hadn't been activated yet). In Netscape (4.72 is the most recent version that works on my machine) clicking on the Digital Hero link gives me just the top-of-page headers. In MSIE (5.5; I only use this when desperate) I can get as far as the login page, but filling in my name and password just knocks me back to the same login page.

Anyone have a suggestion? I'm thinking of trying the computers at the public library, and emailing the files to myself (if successful).... :(

Well....A couple things come to mind off the top of my head:

1. Search for an earlier post by me for a rant on the atrocity that is Netscrape. If you're having problems because of Netscape's inability to follow a simple standard that has been in place by the W3C for <b>years</b> then I'd suggest a better browser.

(Netscape rant over)

2. From the sound of things, you may have purchased credits during our transition period between the servers. This is not a major issue, but it may mean that your account wasn't credited at the time that I switched the database around to the new store format. If you can't login, that's a good indication that the this is the problem, as the only accounts that I recreated in the new system were accounts that had credits assigned.

So....what to do?

1. Register with the site. Yes, you're registering again. Just register with the same username that you had before (or change it if you want).

2. Contact Ben (benseeman@herogames.com) and give him your order info. He'll make sure that the credits get entered into the new store database under your account. Make sure you give him the account info you created in (1).

3. Login once Ben credits your account and grab your subscriptions.

Sorry 'bout the difficulties....we're trying to make the transition as smooth as possible, but due to the joys of DNS, it's not as easy as it sounds ;)

(Netscape rant over)Well, in their defense I'm using an older version of the browser (4.79, actually -- I forgot about that update; this is about two years old). N6 did weird things with most of the pages I frequent, and N7 doesn't support Windows 95. So someone using N7 might be getting in with no trouble.

Plus, I was still having problems when I tried the more recent MSIE 5.5.

1. Register with the site. Yes, you're registering again. Just register with the same username that you had before (or change it if you want).I was finally able to do this by going to the public library and using Opera (3.67 IIRC). The problem with MSIE was that it didn't give me a place to enter my password as I re-registered; those two spaces only showed up when I tried it in Opera. (I've now downloaded Opera 7.01, and will probably switch to it once I check on a couple of needed features.)

Actually, the password bit had nothing to do with IE (or any other browser).....Ben had accidentally overwritten a few changes I had made to the registration page....among them, the ability to specify your password ;)

From the sound of things, I fixed it between the time that you tried it on IE and the time that you tried it on Opera.

FWIW, I like Opera....I really want it to succeed. It still suffers from several critical shortcomings in terms of rendering capabilities, but it's not a bad browser at all....

Outside of IE (which, being a Java developer, I'm ashamed to admit is the best browser on the market for rendering HTML/DHTML -- which is the point of a browser), the best browser I've seen to date is KDE's Konqueror. Truly excellent. Unfortunately, only available for Linux users.

Well....it was a quick fix ;)

The presence (or lack thereof) of the password fields on the registration page is just a matter of straight HTML being present. Even Netscape can handle that :p

If you didn't see the password fields on one browser and then did on the other, then the update when through between those two checks.

Good timing!
