I am new to HERO gaming, but after pondering the rules for a time now ablative armor still does not make sense to me.
I wanted to make armor that got worse when it actually took damage. I thought more “realistic.” However the ablative limitation just doesn’t seem right. So a piece of armor takes more body than it can handle, that means the next time you get hit, your armor may, or may not protect you?
Am I reading this right? Maybe I just need someone to speak slowly to explain it better. The only good example I can come up with is damage to certain areas of the armor, so on the off chance that someone hits in that area next time, it won’t protect you from the blow.
Of the ablative rules I prefer the “simplified” one much better. Effectiveness just degrades, and maybe that’s all that’s necessary right? Whatever the individual likes best, as long as they’re the GM. :) The beauty of HERO.
Then I had another armor quandary. Armor linked to body, and when the body is depleted it is useless. This seems like it would be more expensive. But has anyone looked at linking BODY to Armor?
Is there any benefit to cost…or that might be metagaming, but I got the notion DEF+BODY “feels right.” Sure you resist less but the body comes out of your armor’s body first. Would it just be better to by higher DEF armor instead to shrug off the damage and say it disappears? Especially when dealing with sci-fi regenerating force fields, and the like.
I stop my rambling. My thanks.
