I'm working on updating my "Campaign Rules" file and got to the Settings tab and changed the monetary unit (I was very happy when I found this setting, since I'm running a Fantasy campaign). But what's this "# CU per 1fa" (fa of course being the monetary unit in my campaign)?

CU is a generic "currency unit". This is unit that is used to store prices. When you change the campaign rules associated with a character, Hero Designer adjusts the prices for equipment to use the new units and the new conversion
So, for example, if you set #CU per 1 fa to be 1, then a sword which costs 30 fa will have its price actually stored internally as 100 CU. Now, if you assign a different set of campaign rules that use a different currency unit, gb with #CU per 1 gb set to 3 (which means that 1 gb = 1/3 CU), then the sword's cost will now be shown as 10 gb (30/3).
I believe this is explained in the documentation in the section discussing Equipment.
