Just thought I would start a thread for anyone who wanted to post thier images of their characters. This is not a critique thread. I'm not an artist and the images I post are simply templates with a bunch of cut and paste with some shoestring and leather attached. (8^D)
This thread is for those who wish to share thier artwork. However, please do not critique any artwork unless the artist asks for it. Thanks. (8^D)

Here's my current character, done with the purchased version of http://www.heromachine.com/ and colored outside of that program. I'm not an artist, but it's really cool to be able to come up with SOMETHING, without having to beg my artist friends for a picture! ;D

I didn't even know Hero Machine had a paid version. Does it do anything the free version doesn't?

Here's one I don't think I've shared yet.
This the Nth Man. He's an escaped Viper Super Soldier experiment fighting the good fight. He's essentally a "human paragon" with some mid-level mental abilities. He kept the Viper color scheme to rub their nose in it, essentially.

Well, you get access to the Beta version of HeroMachine2 if you make a $10 "donation". ;)
And yes, it is much better than Heromachine 1, except it only has one pose each for males and females. It also hasn't had much done to the site in almost a year. Unfortunately, Mr. Hebert has been too busy to do any more work on it.

It's not really a paid version actually. If you "donate", you get access to the Beta 2.0 version. While a big improvement over the first, there hasn't been any work on it that I'm aware of for at least the last 6+ months.

Heromachine is one of the great inventions of the 21st Century as far as I'm concerned. Here's one I modified with photoshop. King Thunder was inspired by Lightning from Big Trouble in Little China (the more he moves, the more electricity he builds up).

This one was modified from a template available on Darran 'Max' Hight's website http://www.wuji-web.com/multiverse_index.html which specializes in WB Animated style art. I am doing all my characters for my new campaign in this style. The site was recommended by Acroyear/Bolt (a really kick @$$ artist in his own right). This is Santeria, one of the NPCs in my campaign.

Here is my character Ranger, the first Champions character I ever built way back in 1982 (Although this version of his powered armor dates from around 1986) I now use him as a solo NPC superhero in my campaign. As recently redesigned for 5th Edition using Hero Designer (I never built a 4th Edition version of Ranger because I retired him in 1987) he's 475 points of a$$-whooping with an 80 STR, 16d6EB (boostable to 24d6 for one shot), 52 PD & 52 ED, most of it Hardened. He's got 125 XP, and is heavy on the hard sciences (He's a physicist in his Secret ID.)

My turn. Here's a scan of a piece I commissioned in B&W from a college buddy back in the 80's. I added the color later in pencil.
Fusion is a flamboyant, camera-friendly gloryhound. She saves End until a newscrew arrives and then really pours it on. (I used to drive the GM nuts checking what arcs of the battlefield the cameras were covering.)

I use the Hero Character Template for the pose.
I then modify it with Photoshop Elements.
I use the textures that exist in Photoshop Elements, but I do tweak the color gradient to get what I want.

Yeah, same here (except I use Corel Photopaint instead of Adobe Photoshop). I have zero artistic talent (as far as drawing goes), so I must manipulate existing art to create any personal images. I use the models from the character template collection and then layer different fills onto the model, merging them with different styles... Color Burn being the one that seems to work best for keeping the detail beneath the solid fill.

Feb 12th, '03, 11:37 AM
Try using layers of "multiply" if your software has that setting ont he paint tool. I use that one almost exclusively.
I used to have those character templates.... I appear to have lost them, though :( That's one reason why I hate electronic purchases like that....if it were an actual book, I'd have it for 2 decades and never not know where it was.

The Dodge and Burn tools from PS are what I use as well. If usually select areas I want to manipulate and then adjust the color variations, smudge, a few filters and dodge and burn usually finsih the job.

This one is of my Superman knock-off, Champion. I made the figure using Poser to render the figure and then exported to Photodeluxe (we don't have the $$ for Photoshop) were I made the costume.

Feb 12th, '03, 12:43 PM
Using the same method, I also made Champion's sidekick: Pennant. I decided on the closeup shot because when I zoomed in on her face to fix her hair, I realized that I had made a great expression which would be lost on a larger shot.

I have to fix the thing on the leg... and yes, it's a "homage" (that sounds better than rip off... and worked well for the Image dudes) of the old Lightning Lad suit...
I play around with photo manipulations sometimes. I'm not real good at it, but it's fun. I think I did ok on the few wrinkles I added to the original nude.

Cool, cause I woulden't mind if you could creat a sketch of a superhero I played once in a Play By E-Mail Champions Campain. He was a crossdreser/chemist who found a cemical coumpound which would make any cloth which soaked in it vertualy indistructable. The 'prototype' was an old southern bell dress he had, and he decided to become a crossdresing superhero by the name of The Damsel.
Dress: White, with frills and lace, typical of the late 19th centery, with leg-o-mutton sleves.
Face: Totaly white, with red lips and cheeks.
Hair (wig): Blond sausage curls.
Weapion: A white parasol. Also a string of perls and a female purse of the style of the late 19th centery.
Looks: Defently an afemimen looking guy (looks more like a female than a man). The fact that 'she' is a he is not known to the general public.
Thanks.
Coad Name: The Damsel.

I recently purchased and downloaded the character template pack. I as wondering what would be a good program for editing these templates to make good superhero pics. Keep in mind, I can't afford $600 for things like Photoshop pro. I'm talking about a reasonably affordable program that can make effects like engulfing flames or radioactive aura.

The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) (the site seems to be down right now) is free for the downloading and can be had for the PC platform as well as Unix/Linux (the website claims that the PC version is more unstable than the author would like, but it's never crashed on my Windows box, unlike MS Photodraw). The learning curve can be a little rough, but it's simpler to learn than Photoshop, easily as powerful if not more so, and isn't crippleware without a Mac. Free documentation and tutorials are available online. I recommend Grokking the GIMP (http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/index.html), which is browsable online, downloadable, and available in hardcopy (gotta pay for that last one).

I think it's better than Adobe Photo Delux. It's got most of the features of PhotoShop. There are also many plugins. Being that it's free, it doesn't hurt to go check it out.
I've been using it on Linux for quite some time now and prefer it over pretty much anything else. (Though I use Perl and Image Magick a bit as well...)

I use Photoshop Elements. A scaled down version of Photoshop for $99.00 approximately. I haven't really found anything that I couldn't do with it. As far as what I wanted to get that is. (8^D)

I've never used Adobe Photo Deluxe, but as I understand it, the program occupies the same niche as MS Photodraw, tweaking scans and adding frames, text, and such, optimized for photo-type images.
The GIMP is rather a full-featured graphics program, covering the gamut from tweaking individual pixels to messing with layers and channels.
Better? That's a hard call without knowing what you consider better. The GIMP is significantly more powerful than anything I've ever used but Adobe Photoshop, and it might be more powerful than Photoshop. That's better by my standards. It's also free, free as in beer and free as in speech. That's also better by my standards. It's not easy to use. That doesn't make any difference to me, since i'm one those freaks that get a dopamine rush from problem-solving. But most people want an application that will perform the simple operations that they need with a minimum of fuss and no learning curve issues. Those people will never like the GIMP, because they are not the target audience.
Try downloading the program and reading the first chapter or two of Grokking the GIMP. The only thing you'll lose is a little time. Since you've already got Photo Deluxe, do the same thing. See if it does everything you need with a minimum of fuss. After you've tried both, decide for yourself which is better.
(If you like the GIMP better, remember I steered you right when I make my bid for the statue of venus (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=380&perpage=40&pagenumber=6). :D )

Here is Moth Man for a golden age Champions Game, I used Hero machine with a little bit of photoshop thrown in. He is a cross between Puma Man and Arthur from the Tick, He should have moth wings but Hero machine's moth wings are too fairy like for the character, he has hawk moth wings which look much more like hawk wings.

Here's my character Lora Doubet, a cyborg brick/martial artist. I first created her in 1992 for my first ever Champions game. She's actually gone through a couple of revisions since then and been played in a couple of different campaings with slightly altered backgrounds. Currently, she's been adapted to a more cyberpunk theme than superhero and is being played in Michael Surbrook's Kazei 5 PBEM. These pictures are of her as an UNTIL special agent. Her uniform is a variation on the UNTIL dress blues as imagined in the campaign world. With some input from Rob Hudson on design, I came up with a uniform inspired in part by the AMP Uniforms from Silent Mobius and something I had seen from Masamune Shirow. Even a little bit of the Rocketeer found it's way into the design.

Richochet - A character I created and drew for a friend. One of the most unique character designs I've come up with.
I forget the original origin. This is from an ancient (circa 1982!) Villains & Vigilantes game. The basics are that his powers come from an alien battlesuit. His defensive powers consist of a directional forcefield shield, and his offensive powers are in the form of a set of semi-independent levitating spheres about the size of golfballs that he controlls mentally. They are capable of instantly accelerating to several miles per second speeds and can cause a lot of damage, but they can also rebound from surfaces in order to change direction instantly without doing damage to those surfaces if Richochet so chooses. Indoors or in tight spaces, this can create an extreme autofire effect as the spheres bounce off walls to hit the target over and over. Trickshots are also a specialty of his. He can also "see" through the spheres, and can send them out as scouts, giving him a form of clairvoyance. From these powers and the vaguely "R" like symbols on the battlesuit, he got his name.

Here's an image I had done for my old Aberrant campaign.
The character is named Lamashtu, after an ancient Mesopotamian Goddess. She has claws and flight (which is obvious from the image :p ), but her main power is the ability to infect people with various plagues by touching them. She was going to be part of a group called "The Pantheon" which was various Novas whose powers allowed them to take on the names of various deities in mythology. Never got off the ground though, but I kept the image for future use. Hopefully someone will get some use out of it.

He had magic attacks including a specifiable Energy blast. If I wanted fire or cold, I got it. He also had a variety of abilities like Flight and Teleport. He was an inventor and performer so was reasonably well off.
Like most of the characters he was built originally pre-4th edition.

As Nemesis he continued to stalk crime and fight villains until he was held prisoner by the Coven. Escaping he gave himself up after helping take down the Coven. e got off with a ten year sentence for manslaughter.

I have a couple of pics which are based on other comic characters and am a little unsure whether to post them.
The most contentious is a Wolverine rip off called Wolfclaw.
It would be silly to post the image later to be told to remove it. It looks like Wolverine in that it has the three claws on each hand and is a similar design to when he first made his debut versus the Hulk. Can I or should I post it ?
The second is based on Big Barda, once head of the Female Furies and is an armour wearer. The drawing is adapted from it but looks less like it. Is that one safe to post ?
Thoughts please.
And if you have any comments on the art of Paul Geelan and my brother Paul pleas post those as well.

After Dr Apocalypse managed to destroy most of Genocide's resources in one fell swoop (draining all the mutant energy in the world into yourself making you THE biggest mutant on the planet will do that), the organization fell apart. Whilst the agents despaired, the surviving Minutemen built the next Generation of Minutemen without the flaws of the previous versions. The prime unit of this was Monitor.
Monitor eventually became the Coffee Machine in the Protectors base. Ignominious isn't it ?

This is the Psitan, archfoe of Spirit. Spirit was played by the girlfriend of Paul Geelan and was an egoist with some brick powers I believe (don't ask). Bit munchkinny.
However the Psitan was always able to hit her first with his ego-powers and leave her mentally paralysed before running away.

One of the early villains again, Nightmare managed to get away with what she was planning to do in her first appearance. Area effect presence drain will do that to you.
The first people she caused to flee were The Flame and Mindshock.
she became a mainstay in the campaign. Nightmare sold her soul to the devil for power. And hated the Warlock who made a better deal. Nightmare's bargain did make her immune to the Demoness's soul touch power though.

The original Dr Apocalypse was a recurring villain but at this stage was thought dead after the Bravarian Illuminati sent an assassin out who sliced and diced the good doctor's brain.
So his son became Dr Apocalypse 2 and came after the Protectors. Later his daughter would take on the heroes but that's another story.

Wolfclaw was a Wolverine rip off as you can see. The costume is when he was a member of the group MAIM, Mutants Against Ignorant Mankind.
Created by the main GM of the campaign. And often badly played. 5d6 HKA before Str and trying to figure in martial arts and that ws used in preference to most anything else. Sadly.

This is the third rendition of the Flame character sheet. I am not putting up Mk 2 as it really does not give much to people.
However Mk 3 does.
As you see the Flame is in flight and about to open fire. There is a little water damage which is why the right hand side is blue.
At this point in his career the Flame has clashed with several of his team mates for their lax attitude to law enforcement
ie looking cool is more important than enforcing the law and the penchent for some of them to let the villains go.
He was also liaising with the government over the running of the team. No easy thing when Thatcher is in charge.

Sometimes your mistakes come back to haunt you. Other times something you were supposed to find inert like say a Skull turns into the real thing.
So the whole group of us are in our first multi-part adventure which pits the Archon and his champions, The Protectors against the forces of the Destroyer. We had to collect pieces of something like the key to time. So having collected the first bit, the Magician (Yup my character) hit the wrong button in the time sphere and we ended up in the 13th Century. Up against the Swamp Witch. She was functionally blind but made do with sonar. And used Telekinesis in the form of a huge purple demon.
Created and drawn by Paul Geelan this was the first villain in the campaign to have reflection. She became another recurring foe joining the Warlock in the Pentacle.

Those who have been following the thread will have seen me mention Arsenic and what he became Master Spite. This indeed is Master Spite, a thoroughly horrible villain.
If you killed him, he regenerated. He has a couple of nasty transformation and killing attacks. Spite joined the Pentacle and had his revenge on the Great Alfonso killing him in combat despite stringent efforts to save his life.
Spite became one of the villains that got pounded in order to stop him doing something nasty. because his nasty was nasty indeed.

The attached is an example of aul's warped creativity on occasion. He wanted a Demon a little bit different for a witch to summon and this is what he came up with.
Mysteria looked like an ordinary paranormal but was a witch. And what she summoned up was Vincento. First time he appeared he did not say much. Until someone actually stunned Mysteria. he then pulled out a humungous handgun and opened fire on the offending hero uttering the line
'You hurta the bossa lady, you make a my day !'
Vincento was hunted by Elvis the Centaur. (Yup, Presley crossed with a centaur).

Part of the dynamic duo, Dr Jackal and Mr Punch, the latter was a simple and simple minded brick.
In England there was a tradition known as Punch and Judy shows where Mr Punch usully used a truncheon to beat up Judy, the Crocodile, the Policeman and the Doctor. He also talked in a high pitched voice.
Typical dialogue:-
Mr Punch: Can I hit them Dr Jackal ?
Dr Jackal: No, Punch

Storn
Mar 21st, '03, 12:24 PM
Death Tribble asked me to comment on Paul Geelan's work. I'm sorry to hear that this person has dissappeared.
The artwork is raw. That doesn't mean much, my artwork was raw once upon a time too.
If Paul was around, I would point him towards Burne Hogarth's dynamic anatomy... the anatomy needs to come up a notch. Also, to start paying attention to line weight, it is uniform and that is the kiss of boredom in a drawing. Lastly, ditch the color pencils. Granted, these are a decade old and now we have digital color. But color pencils, unless you are doing tremendous amounts of work with, are just cheap looking.
Learn watercolor instead. Or acrylic. Watercolor is fast!!! But very difficult. My favorite superhero traditional paint is goauche, because it is SO graphic, so matte. And it scans better than any paint I know of. But many people find goache very difficult to master.
What about digital Storn?, you use it! Unless you learn at least one traditional means of painting, applying color, digital will be a horrible crutch. I find going back and forth between traditional painting and digital painting, they inform one another. But digital is SO vast and SO easy, it is a horrible trap of TOO many options for a new artist. You might not believe me, but it is the plain truth. Trust me on this. There will be a few exceptions, but they will have to work twice as hard as they need to.
Lastly, to make a transition between hobby artist and one who works in this field, or any other illustration field... ya got to be able to tell a story. Now, I'm doodling costume designs and bad guys in my own thread and that is fine and cool... nothing wrong with it. But I get hired because I can do multiple figures in action with a foreground, middleground background that tells a story. And perspective, anatomy, design, emotion, drama... its all there. Now we are talking about a much more difficult beast to deal with than simple head to toe shots of superheroes/villians.
Here endeth the lecture.

Bluebottle is another member of the Chaos Corps and a living example of the "harm" that television, cinema and the media can do to people. As priests have warned for some time, there are hidden messages on records and in the visual media.
Bluebottle picked these up while watching the movies of the Canadian director, David Cronenberg (Yes blame Canada).
After watching the Fly, he finally 'got' the message and became the villainous Bluebottle.
For the record Cronenberg thinks Bluebottle is deranged and needs psychiatric help.

After Dr Apocalypse turned himself into the world's most powerful mutant and biggest as well, Genocide was wrecked as it attempted to destroy them.
While the Minutemen analysed their mistakes and brought forth a new set of robots to continue the struggle, a lot of the human agents lost hope. Those that did not were the more fanatical mutant haters and they formed X-Terminate. One of their most effective operatives was the X-Terminator.

He was trying to steer the Earth ot of orbit for a race of machines when the Protectors and Brother Death, special agent of the Bravarian Illuminati caught up with him. Dr Apocalypse returned to plague the Protectors several more times after his death. His son took the name and attacked the team; and then Apocalypse's essence was used to power a villain base before he was able to build himself a new body.
Then Dr Apocalypse drained mutant powers from all the world's mutants making him one of the biggest paranormals on the planet and an instant target for Genocide who lost lots of material trying to take him down.

This is the head of Wavelength Doc Spectrum. Unlike the rest of his team, his costume is slightly different being black with a rainbow of colour along one side.
He did not make as many appearances as the rest of the team.
However it was enough for Paul Geelan and the main GM to mercilessly rib me with the spoof Waveylength comprising such luminaries as Permanent Wave who made your hair curly and Good Bye Wave whose power sent you flying out of the combat. And then there was Dr ZX81, which was a computer predecessor to the Spectrum.

This was the first mega villain of the main GM of the campaign. Simple costume and many of you may have seen something similar or used something similar. Best thing about the guy was the costume.
The problem with this guy was many fold. High CVs, high powered and high defenses. And this was at the start of the campaign. Oh 10d6 Entangle is along the lines of what I mean by problems. And there is the matter of little or no disads that you can take advantage of, such as no vulnerabilities or hunteds other than the team. And then overused.
after some complaints the vllain was revised but it still left a bad taste in the mouth. And unfortunately the GM did not learn his lesson. A new mega-villain came in called Necromancer who was overused. Try several unlinked scenarioes on the trot with him appearing each time.

One of the best ideas that the main GM came up with was the Chemical Compound. The second incarnation of which featured Uranium who was basically an excuse to use the neutralization or suppress power.
plus the character sheet picture looked pretty good.

Dr Density was a brick who also had ego powers but nothing too gross. Unlike Spirit who was a teammate.
Density was created and drawn by Paul Geelan. However the main GM liked Dr Demsity and Paul liked Moonlight Shadow so the pair swapped characters.
Unlike the Wolverine rip off Wolfclaw that the main GM would play, he never once played Dr Density badly. Density was a mutant who never rammed that fact down people's throats.
He was a goody goody and really thank whoever for that. It was always a pleasure to run up against this guy.
Later versions had a cloak but this is the original picture.

From one of the most loved members of the Protectors to the most hated. Lightray was supposed to be going straight when he joined the team. Instead of which he assisted in an attempt to kill us.
I really like the design on this sheet which is why I am including it. Drawn by the main GM.

As the topic came up about playing in different eras here is the Victor, Britain's premier hero of the War years.
I like the design of the Victor's costume as it does not have a Union Jack but is suggestive of the flag.

This was the first villain I designed and had a character sheet for.
Paul Geelan was the artist. It is a simple black armour over one of the existing templates.

Here is the first of two pictures of my currently active long running PC, Black Cat.
This was originally a pencil sketch that I scanned in. Then a wonderful soul on the HML offered to do computer inking for anyone on the list, and he did the rest.

This is the secod of two pictures of Cat. I had her history up, and her character sheet with picture online, and a then acquiantence (now friend) saw it, and went home and read her history and background and felt inspired (as he said) and came in with this picture of Cat- as he put it "I made some changes, you can think of it as Black Cat the animated series or something).

Some very nice stuff in here!
Here's my contribution. This is a now deceased character. I never quite got the wings right (They're supposed to be kind of ethereal wings formed out of light energy).
