View Full Version : Multiple Force Field slots in a multipower?

Making a energy projector who uses force fields.

I have this question. Is there any reason why I couldn't separate the PD and ED portions of the force field and place them in different slots. I recall there's a rule about redundant slots in a multipower.

(The idea is he can concentrate his powers on defending against physical or energy attacks or both, but cannot maximize both and still do a full attack).

For example in a 60 point MP:

Cost Power
60 MP reserve
10 m 10d6 EB
5 u 5d6 EB, AF (radius)
4 u 3d6 RKA, energy
3 m +15 PD FF
3 m +15 ED FF

Anyone?

Thanks.

It is a bit odd, but off the top of my head, I see no reason that this construct couldn't be allowed. Of course in the end its up to the GM opinion, if it is allowed.

Seriously, it looks like you're remembering wording from 3rd Edition Champions, which said on page 38, "Unlike Elemental Controls, redundant slots are quite all right in a Multipower; in fact, one of the traditional uses of a Multipower is to have two different Energy Blasts (say, one normal and one Explosion) without having to pay so many Power Points."

It looks like that wording (along with the rules saying that redundant slots in ECs were forbidden) was removed in 4E and 5E.

This is perfectly all right -- in fact, in my opinion Force Field is one of the best applications for the "variable slot" usage in a multipower. One of the PC's in my current campaign has a 60 pt multipower with 40 PD Forcefield in one variable slot and 40 ED Forcefield in another variable slot, and hence can vary her defenses as she feels the need/has the spare pool cap room.

Having said that, don't allow a "cheap variable" setup. I'd allow your setup; here's what I'm talking about...

60 Multipower (60)
6u 12d6 EB (60)
5u 10d6 EB (50)
1u 5 PD/ED Forcefield (10)
5u 25 PD/ED Forcefield (50)
