View Full Version : Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)
Hyper-Man
Jun 2nd, '04, 07:57 PM
Hi guys,
I am looking for NEW words of transformation for characters with powers that only work in heroic id.
Examples:
SHAZAM!
By the Power of Greyskull!...
Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats Ho!
Freakout!
Thing Ring do your Thing!
Flame On!
any sailor senshi/scout (as much as it pains me to admit..)
Wonder Twins Powers Activate!
Enuch Chuck!
You wouldn't like me when I'm Angry...
Change, change, the form of man! Free the prince forever damned!
Release the might from fleshy mire! Boil the blood in heart of fire!
Gone, gone, the form of man! Arise the Demon --- Etrigan!
In brightest day, in blackest night,
no evil shall escape my sight,
let those who worship evil's might,
beware my power,
Green Lantern's light! (I know, this isn't exactly a transformation but it's still cool!)
Abrakadabra, Hocus-Pocus, Open-Sesami
Abraka-Sesami, Hocus-kadabra
BTW this is actually for a speedster/brick named Hyper-Man that I am still working on. And yes, he is a lot like Freakazoid meets Dragon Ball Z.
Everyone who can name all the referrences will qualify for a drawing to win a 'Vote Mightybec 04" campaign thread mention! ;)

Captain Atlas from Golden Age Champions transformed by shouting "Lollapalooza!"

"Gone, Gone, boring Stan!
Behold the hero, Hyper-Man!"

Darkness beyond twilight
crimson beyond blood that flows
buried in the flow of time
is where your power grows
I plague myself to conquer
all of those who stand
before the mighty gift bestowed in my unworthy hand
let the fools who stand before me be destroyed by the power you and I posses!
Dragon Slave!
(Not actually a transformation, but also cool.)
EDIT: It should be "I pledge myself", but "I plague myself" sounds appropriate. :D

IIRC Alan Moore's Miracleman used the word "Cotima" (anagram of "atomic") to assume his superhuman form.
It was "Kimota" - "atomic" spelt backwards, kind of.
Back in the 50s, there was the Australian Captain Atom, who preceded his US namesake by ten years or so. His transformation word was "Exenor!"
He's also a serious contender for "Character with the Worst Normal Identity Name" - Bikini Atoll. No, really. In his secret identity he was named "Bikini".
Of course, that _was_ before the invention of the two-piece swimsuit...

The whole "combat filibuster" sounds like a Power that Hyper-Man might actually have -- something like a massive Mind Control (single command: stand around and listen) with Area Of Effect, Incantations, and a few other Modifiers. :D
Going back to the original question, we might go with, "It's party time!" Or maybe, "It's Hyper time!"

While I'm loathe to dredge up this particular memory, there actually was a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon called Hyperman. It was educational, yet entertaining, so of course it died a horrible death. His power-activation phrase was a simple, yet remarkably emotional ...
"It's tiiime ... to go HYPER!"
And now ... the contest!
SHAZAM: Easy one. DC's Captain Marvel
By The Power of Greyskull: He-Man
Thundercats Ho!: Lion-O and the Sword of Omens
Freak Out!: Freakazoid!
Thing Ring: An old (late 70s early 80's) cartoon of Marvel's Thing, where the main character was a young boy with a ring that turned him into the big orange guy.
Flame On!: The Human Torch
Any Sailor Scout: ... uh, you answered this one for me.
Wonder Twin Powers Activate!: Zan and Jana, from Superfriends.
Enuck Chuck: Apache Chief from Superfriends (I always spelled it 'Inek Chok', partually to differenciate it from 'Eunoch Chuck', who is a whole different superhero)
You wouldn't like me: Bill Bixby as David Banner in The Hulk live-action show
Gone, Gone the form of man: Etrigan, but you said that. ;)
In brightest day: The Green Lantern recharge oath
Abracadabra, Hocus-Pocus, Open-Sesami, Abracapocus, Hocus-Cadabra: While the first three are old hat, the lot of them together add up to Bugs Bunny.
I ... have ... no ... LIFE!

Never used tranformation words Not sure why exactly... except maybe they're even a little too corny for me. Or maybe it just never occurred to me.
Closest I get is a character that requires incantations to perform Instant Change, but I never wrote down any words for it. Hmm... now I think I should. I've been missing an opportunity.
But anytime I hear stuff like this I think of Bart Simpson trying to cast spells in one of the Treehouse of Horrors episodes.

While not using a WORD to transform does anybody remember Dial H for Hero ?
And would you build the character as multiform and just make a stack of alternate forms to randomly choose from?

Multiform, 1000 forms, -1 NCC (Can activate, has no choice of what form, form may only be used once)
Didn't that vary based on which dial you used? I know that Chris & Vickie had no control over their new form and it only lasted an hour but the primary Dial that Robby Reed and Hero Cruz used had no such limits. Heck, Reed even changed into the same character more than once. Then there was Nick, Chris & Vickie's ongoing annoying NPC, who seemed to have the power to pick and design his own multiforms and had been unconsciously designing theirs. 'Course, you could sim that if you want by having the other players come up with suitably annoying/one note forms.
I don't like the new Dial comic though, lacks that element of good-natured goofiness.

Thanks for all the great ideas guys,
I wanted to turn this thread to a more general question about what makes OIHID really worth -1/4 limitation bonus. Is it just having to say something, or perform a specific gesture like touching a staff to the ground like Thor, the early years, or having to touch your wrists together like Image Comic's homage to Shazam!/Captain Marvel, MightyMan enough to justify this?
opinions welcome as always.
Magmarock
Jun 5th, '04, 06:54 PM
OIHID is a little ambiguous on definition.
It says in FReD that the character should maintain two distinct identities, but I don't think that is good enough. In my game, I wouldn't let someone take that Lim on their powers if the only thing keeping them from using it was fear of revealing a Secret ID. If the character's powers are available all of the time (like Spiderman's powers, for instance, or Superman) then, no OIHID.
If the character had to use a specific object to do an instant-change, I might allow it. Can the item be taken away, is the action restrainable? Then sure, I would allow it.
OIHID is best used to describe non-focused powers that aren't available 24/7... like if a character was a lycanthrope, or a Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde type.
My humble opinion. :D

OIHID is worth -1/4 only if it truly is limiting in some way... Tony Stark needs time and a place to put his armor on/his briefcase containing it could be taken away, Donald Blake is screwed if his walking stick gets stolen, Billy Batson's mouth can be taped shut/ his secret ID is blown if he can't get away to change...
If you're Michael Keaton and you just happen to be useless without your rubber batsuit, that's more of a Focus... I usually think of OIHID as a Focus or Incantations limitation that only applies to the secret ID or the change to hero form, not to the hero himself.
I've had the thought this is often worth less than other -1/4 Limitations in terms of how it actually limits the character, since once they have actually transformed to hero ID they have all the points but no limitation anymore. As a GM I would monitor its use very closely.
However, if it is going to cause the PC difficulty, and since there are no "-1/8" limitations to represent it as a lesser value limitation, I'd say it's a legitimate, if perhaps too cost effective, point savings.

Agreed. The GM should keep tabs on the PC using OIHID and note how much 'In Game' time is spent in the Hero ID. If the PC is in that Hero ID 75% or more, then maybe the OIHID isn't justified.
It really depends on the game, of course... if your campaign is mostly combat, then you would expect that all heroes are at combat-readiness and OIHID might be a rarity in your characters.
In my current game, there is a battlesuit character with a power framework built as a focus, and then his additional, lesser powers outside of the framework are OIHID. Out of combat, this character spends quite a bit of time outside of his battlesuit. Ok, it might make a difference the the suit only fits through a normal sized door with much maneuvering. It is large, so he leaves it out side. It's kind of funny, too, because other than his intellect, he's a normal guy outside of the suit. ;)

So are the characters HourMan and UnderDog OIHID or IIF focus users since they both take a pill to get their powers?
There is no way to force them to change back early, the effect just wears off at least in HourMan's case, I don't remember UnderDog changing back before he was ready.

I don't see how a pill could be a focus, unless someone can force the PC to cough it up. Or can negate the pill with another drug. Or can scoop it out while Desolid (ala Neo scooping a bullet out of trinity in the 3rd Matrix).
I can see that pill as an Instant-Change bought as focus/charges, but all the other powers that happen afterward as a result of the pill? Hmmm... no. :D But then again, I'm not the GM of that game.

I would just go for the OIHID for either the Hourman or the Focus that is not a focus (Iron Man).
The point here is that there is a point in time where the PC has no powers. Upcoming later this summer is a perfect example of why OIHID is such a pain.
A man and a woman are in a diner. They are discussing serious issues to effect them both. Wham! Out of nowhere a car ruins a perfectly good window as it sails through and at the couple. Luckily the man is a superhero and pulls them both under the car as it hurtles above them.

I think I've heard of this movie.
Some kind of limited-run, artsy indie film, isn't it? ;)
OIHID is definitely limiting, but sometimes it seems to me that using Multiform would be a more "honest" approach for a lot of characters, ie. not just a munchkiny points grab...
However, as always, it comes down to the GM. If he's doing his job, any -1/4 power will be a pain in the butt at least 25% of the time...

Althought Hyper-Man has a twisted sense of humor he does exist in a somewhat serious 4 color champions setting. The short and easy of his origin is that his normal form, Mike Maxwell (nods to Billy Batson, Dexter Douglas, and Wally West to name just a few) is a talented young college bum :smoke: who happens to be extremely lazy with his studies. He can afford to because of the following Talents and skill enhancers that was born with: Lightning Calculator, Eiditic Memory, Cramming, Scholar, Scientist and x10 Speed Reading. These combined with his 18 INT he can pretty much ace any college course he takes with just a little time to put the cramming, speed reading and eiditic memory to good use (and making sure that he doesn't have 2 exams on the same day!)
My idea for the origin of his powers and and ability to transform to get them is borrowing a little from Flash, Johnny Quick and Freakazoid. He ends up taking a high level quantum physics course because he is actually interrested in understandng it as opposed to just memorizing it and making a grade. He actually promises himself early on to avoid using his short term cramming talent. He actually wants to learn the subject permanently! :joint: Unfortunately, his laziness kicks in and he forgets to study like he should since he promised himself to not 'cheat' this time. His other BIG concern is making sure to not put his A+ GPA in jepardy. He ends up having to cram the hard way all night before a big exam without using his special techniques and since he is not used to the long process involved in doing this normally, he really goes overboard on the caffiene. :idjit: This sets off a chemical reaction in his brain chemistry that when combined with his declaraton of astonishment when he realizes that he actually understands the theory and math behind the Higgs Bosons role in giving particles mass it transforms him into the embodiment of his inner hero: Hyper-Man! :doi: I was originally thinking something along the lines of Eureka! or Zipidydooda! to be what he first says which from then on triggers his transformations between forms.
Does anyone have any ideas for a better 1 or 2 word statement that would fit this origin? And should the same word(s) be used for going back to his normal form or does anyone have a better idea there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe his costume transformed into the bucket. Hey, if the Human Torch anad Mr. Fantastic's costumes can handle their powers why not?

Ahh, but sometimes he was water IN a bucket, and sometimes he was water AND a bucket.
When he was water and bucket, his face would be on the bucket.
When he was water sans bucket, that damned monkey always had a bucket handy. Heck if I know where he was keeping the thing.
Google up SeanBaby for details (but beware the non-work-safe ads, which is why I don't have the link handy).

Does anyone have any ideas for a better 1 or 2 word statement that would fit this origin? And should the same word(s) be used for going back to his normal form or does anyone have a better idea there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
"Schrodinger's Cat!" - The idea that, under Quantum Physics, that a cat can both alive and dead until the waveform collapses and a choice must be made. (It also sounds like an exclamation.) Of course, he might have to say a couple of times before he collapses the correct way. :D
"Wave-Particle Duality!" - The idea that light behaves sort of a wave and sort of a particle. He might say, "Wave Form" and then change back to "Particle Form".

In my game, I wouldn't let someone take that Lim on their powers if the only thing keeping them from using it was fear of revealing a Secret ID.
My character in one PBEM has several powers bought with OHID because she can't use them as her day-to-day self, only in her super identity as Champion Wind. She *also* has Secret ID, and some other psych lims constraining her ability to change and to use her powers. The OHID limit is valid because she can't use the limited powers most of the time, and changing to Champion Wind is not something she does casually.

That makes sense. She can't use the powers until she becomes the hero. Some type of transformation must occur, or battlesuit armor must be donned. My examples were of heroes who have access to their powers all the time, even when they are in their Secret ID- like Superman or Spiderman. These PC types don't deserve the OIHID Lim on their powers merely for a Social Disad.

I would almost consider it a house rule that if mind control (at +30) can't make a character lose their powers (transform, take off powered armor, etc.) its not worth the -1/4 OIHID bonus.

I like this one a lot, both for the homage to Captain Marvel and because it's something he might actually have said when he made his "Eureka" discovery.
It also reminded me that Captain Marvel, Jr. had to say "Captain Marvel" in order to change between his heroic and normal identities which made him, as far as I know, the only superhero who could never say his own name!!

What was the cartoon that had kids with two rings that they had to put together (along the zig-zag break of the half-discs on top of the rings) to summon a genie (I think it was a genie). Was that Kazaam? I vaguely recall some sort of summoning phrase...
Anybody remember that one? Or was that one of my hallucinations these pills are supposed to cure?

I have a character named Jabberwock, and he's based on the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll (poem is taken from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872). He transforms into his hero form by reciting the line from the poem "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!" and returns to his normal form by reciting "So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought."
Guess it all depends on what your origin is based upon.

Be ashamed. All of this geekitude and pedantry, yet no one has mentioned
"O, mighty Isis!"
Ah yes, from the live-action TV series and comic book. On the series, Andrea had to wear her amulet openly to transform (once she dropped it and had to go back and find it), but in the comics she didn't.
The comic book also gave us the words to change back to Andrea. They were, as best as I can recall, "Ancient gods of time and space, put Andrea into her proper place".

Back in the late 1980's, before the fall of the Berlin wall, I made up a character called "Captain Capitalism". He had huge amounts of Density Increase (he carried the weight of the American people), and his powers were greatly reduced in communist counties.
To activate his Instantchange, he would hold up an ordinary dollar bill and shout:

Kapitan Kommunist was his nemesis (although also a hero in his own land). His main power was Area Effect Power Transfer. His rallying cry was Russian for "For the people!", or something like that.

I designed, but never wrote up, Captain California. His powers were limited to California, which had the right balance of "tapped but underutilized crystal energy" and smog (which kept the crystal energy from radiating into deep space).
He would have been fun to play, because in that campaign that I considered playing him, crystal energy actually became a serious issue and Captain California was really designed for comic relief. However, he could only be an NPC since the campaign took place mostly in New York City.
"When your crystal energies combine, I become... Captain California!!! Dude."

You might think about where the character gets his powers from if he is using a phrase to invoke them. The only character I ever ran who used triggering words was "Lancelot Steele - The Indestructable Man" who got his powers from the vaguely described "Gods Of Goodness". His "Power-Up Phrase" was:
Powers Of Might and Hope and Weal,
Turn me into Lancelot Steele!!
Corny, I admit but it fit the character and I have always been a sucker for rhyming couplets.

Of course, then he would transform into his "Hero" ID which was so weird and non-euclidean that the PLAYER would start chanting like something out of a Conan movie for about ten minutes, just to weird people out.

Not a transformation word, but from the Destroyer novels - and I think it's actually a direct quote from one of the Hindu Vedas
"I am created Shiva, the Destroyer.
I am Death, the shatterer of worlds."
However, I agree with the person who suggested either "Schrodinger's Cat!" or else "Wave form" and "Particle form" to switch back and forth. That seems to fit the character.
Lucius Alexander
The palindromedary suggests "Sator arepo tenet opera rotas." To switch back, say it backwards.
