I know I said I was gonna let this go but, Blast it, I am not gonna let this thing beat me! Dan, I'm having pretty much the same problems as before. I contacted Microsoft and explained my problem to them (thinking if it was a hardware problem, they might could figure it out). They said it looked like a software problem to them. So, to start out: On "Preferences" for individual Export Templates, what should they be set to "Open With" ("Launch Anywhere GUI" or "Internet Explorer")? Next: After downloading v.1.23, the way it acts has changed. Before (v.1.22 and 1.21), the Java window for Export Templates came up blank and HD came up with no open characters each new session. Now, HD opens with a character open (same one regardless of wheither or not I closed it the previous session or opened or closed any other character), and I am able to set and view the Export Template for this character, but no other.
I know this is tedious (Believe Me!), but I really want this to work. Please help me.

1. I have no idea what you're talking about. What "Preferences" for Export Templates? Under windows, the Preview Character menu option (under the File menu) will execute run32.dll, which (in turn) will launch the default renderer for the chosen template type (HTML, PDF, text, RTF, etc). If this doesn't work for you, then there is something off on your Windows setup.

2. There has been no change in how the application launches between 1.22 (or 1.21) and the 1.23 update. None. The last time anything was changed during the application launch process was for the 1.21 update, at which point some aspects of the launch process were split off into independent threads (to speed things up a bit).

The application "remembers" its previous state (open characters, window size and position, etc) by writing everything to a file when it is shut down. The file is appPrefs.xml.

If HD is not remembering its state between sessions, then (once again) there is something wrong with the setup on your system. It could very well be related to whatever problems you are having with the Preview Character functionality, as that also relies on being able to write the file out to the hard drive.

Again, this is a system issue that I really can't help much with. Check the permissions that you have on the HD install directory and make sure that the user you are logged in as has rights to create (and delete) files in that directory.

Here's something that might help. After playing around with HD a little, I've made a discovery. If I go directly to the folder with the character files, without launching HD, and open a character directly by using the "Open With" command from the "File" pulldown menu, and choosing the "Launch Anywhere GUI", when the character comes up I can access and use any Export Template, preview it, and print it. If I open another character and try to set an Export Template, it comes up with the Template I have selected for the previous character already highlighted. In this situation, I am unable to preview or print the character sheet. The only real drawback to directly opening every character sheet from windows is that each time I launch HD, the characters are already opened.

Once again, this is a problem with your system. There is nothing that I can do.

HD works just fine (ask everyone else on these boards) in the areas that you're having difficulties.

I have stated theories on what may be causing it on your system, but the final determination of the cause (and the fix) is going to have to be on your side.

I know this maybe a dead issue but I notice you were asking what should export templates be set to open with.
Did you set a program to open the export templates?
Also how are you starting HD, are you using a shortcut or the link in the start menu?

Are you trying to open the template from within Windows Explorer (i.e. browse to the file and double click on it)? If so, I don't think that was how HD was intended to be used.

1. When you launch HD, all characters open when you last closed it will be open.

2. The template each one is set to is remembered.

3. If you want to change the template, you just set it to a different one. Then you either preview or export.

Fundamentally, you don't open a character like you would a word document. You launch HD first and then open the character within the HD program itself.

Appreciate the suggestions, guys. Dan is right, though. Ther is something wrong, either with my copy of HD or my computer. I've figured out a way to make the Export Templates work (however unconventional), so rather than make the problem worse, I'll take what I can get.
