Recently I started running a D20 Modern game and although I have had some fun running it I find myself feelling really frustrated with the system. I have been GMing Hero for a long time now and I am just to used to the flexibility. I do however like the story I am telling and the way the direction the game is going.

So basically I want to keep the same characters as before but I want to convert them from D20 Modern to Dark Champions/Hero System. Could anyone give me assistance in how to do this?

I would appreciate any assistance you may render.

My advice: Don't try to convert. Treat the D20 character as a conceptual starting point and create a new character in Hero that is based on the same concept. My experiences with trying to actually convert the numbers between game system has generally been pretty miserable. Different game system offer different features and trying to do a straight "convert the numbers" has a tendency to to give you tunnel vision and you miss out out on things that the new system does that the old one didn't with the end results of producing a character that only has those abilities that were common to both systems.

Here here. I tried a few hard fast conversions on old V&V characters, some D&D characters, etc. etc. I wasn't happy with any of them until I did exactly what John Desmarais suggested. Use the d20 (or whichever system) character as a conceptual starting point and then make the character from "scratch". There's nothing wrong with having a conversion guide as exactly that, a guide, but don't get blinded by it and the numbers. If you stick with the concept, invariably, you'll keep the idea you loved, be as effective in your niche as were in the old system, and possibly be able to expand on some ideas you were waiting on to level/advance before.

I'd probably agree with the others. However, if you're really in favor of a conversion, check out Killer Shrike's fantasy D&D to Hero conversion stuff. D20Modern is similar enough that it should work for the basics.

That part of KS's website would be here:

Not perfect for your purposes, but a good start.

Some of the abilities are probably easier to port over than others.

Strong Hero's Melee Bash would just be HTH Attack. Ignore Hardness would be HTH Killing Attack (only vs objects).

Tough Hero's abilities would mainly be stuff like Damage Resistance, increased REC, or extra BODY (only to determine if dead or not).

Smart Hero should probably just load up on skill purchasing breaks (e.g. Scholar) and Overall Skill Levels.

Are there specific abilities you're looking for suggestions on?

My advice would be to translate the characters at a conceptual level and do a clean re-build. Do not (I advise) attempt to re-create in HERO any of the features that the D20 Modern charcters have simply as a result of system artifacts: and don't try to prevent their acquiring HERO system artifacts such as dependant NPCs. Remember that you are switching to HERO because you like it better: don't try to make it be D20.

I would also recommend getting Dark Champions when it hits stands in a few months ... I think it'd be quite useful :)
