Hey Herodom,
Is anyone out there running a Turakian Age play by email campaign that I can join in on? I'm interested in sitting on the other side of the table for this one (I usually run campaigns), but my town seems to be oddly bereft of roleplayers, and ergo, I'm turning yet again to PBeM. I'm very experienced in this medium, and I can post once or twice a week.
I'd appreciate any offers, or at the very least, anyone who can point me in the right direction. :)
Muchos gracias

I'd be interested as well, unfortunately I'm a noob to PBEM. I don't understand how it works exactly. I mean, wouldn't combat take forever with one or two replies a week? Is there something I'm missing that makes things move along at a faster pace? Any info would be appreciated. If you could explain the basics of PBEM I could possibly run a campaign. I have all the fantasy books and am dying to try my hand at it :)

Play By Email is simple in concept, really, but it does seem at it's slowest when combat comes up. If the players respond quickly (a few days), the game won't drag. If they post slowly, it can take weeks or months to resolve a battle scene. So in that respect, it's a bit of a fickle mistress. On the other side of it, though, pbem allows us to really dig into character interaction and introspection a lot more than most ftf games do.
Dont' get me wrong, I'll take ftf over pbem any day of the week. But when you live in a city that seems bereft of Hero players, and most everyone would rather LARP (shudder), you have to take what you can get. In my case, pbem. :) It's not bad at all.
Think of it as creative writing with friends. :)
That's my attempt, at least.

I hear ya man, I hope you can find some other players. I've also been looking for some ftf players for a fantasy hero campaign. Have you ever considered playing by instant messenger? I think it would be very feasible especially if a conference call could be set up between the players so that all of them could communicate by voice as well as text. Have you ever heard of something like this before? It sounds good in theory, but in practice I wonder how it would work out.

I have played by ICQ, mIRC, WebRPG and Yahoo Messenger. It can do when you really need a fix and can not find a local group.
Some of the things I have run into while gaming through chat:
Putting together a stable group is just as difficult as it is in real life.
Learn timezones. Let everyone know which timezone you are referring to or someone will be 2 hours late to the game.
Be descriptive. There is no body langue or voice inflection in chat.
Find a dice bot or try diceless.
Some great tips can be found here: 12 Tips for Internet GMing (http://www.roleplayingtips.com/readissue.php?number=135)
I have tried to use Yahoo Messenger's voice feature but it is problematic at best. Only one person can be talking at once and that just never happens around the gaming table.

"Rock and a Hard Place" is a PBeM Turakian Ages game run on Yahoo Groups that recently accepted lurkers (I am one). Not sure about accepting new players, but the GM is a nice fella.

I'm starting an unconventional PBeM based off an Arcane Apocalypse of the Turakian Age setting. There's character creation rules and a magic system document-in-process posted in the files so far. We just got started and are working on Character Creation and the Magic rules.
Stop by for a peek and join if you're interested.

We're located at Arcane_Apocalypse in yahoogroups. Lurkers are welcome.
