I have a character named Strega who is an Italian stage mage.
The basic idea I'm working with is that she's a Gypsy (is there such a thing as an Italian gypsy?) in a world where magic has been around for quite awhile and super humans are becoming a reality.
The thing is, Gypsies have known about super powered beings for generations. However, the gift that lets you cast real magic is no more common among Gypsies than it is anywhere else (its very rare). Gypsies have considered their knowledge of super powered beings (such as vampires and werewolves) to impose on them a requirement to do something about these evils. They've learned to use stage magic as a weapon. They became pretty good at it and when other super powered beings (mutants, for example) started appearing, Gypsies were better prepared than most to deal with these as well.
Stega grew up among Gypsies, but she never really took this responsibility very seriously. She's very good at stage magic and has used it to make a living in Morocco (where there is a booming tourist trade) as an entertainer. But the Gypsy elders have managed to manipulate her into coming back home and joining the Italian superteam.

I need some help fleshing this out.

Gypsies, if I recall correctly, are predominantly from Romani stock. They are mostly from southestern europe (Romania and Greece), though they travel all over southern and eastern europe. They're pretty much their own ethnic group. Since they're so nomadic, however, it would be possible for one to be born in Italy by happenstance, or to be from a family that settled in Italy in recent generations - parents or granparents for instance - which would mean they would still have a strong sense of identity and a connection to their still wandering kith and kin. Italy could have its own version of the Gypsy, but I don't know. Solomon would be a good person to ask.
