This is another of them brain-dead questions. I've looked through the manual and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. There is something I must be doing wrong, or not have configured correctly.

Case 1:
1) I open a new charcter (Ctrl-N).
2) Default template is SuperHeroic, so I click on Template and change to Heroic.
3) No changes are apparent (no equipment tab, pts are still 200/150) and its still using my Champions campaign rules.

Case 2:
1) I open a "new character from template"
2) Browse/Select Heroic in Character Templates directory
3) Equipment tab shows up and pts are 0/0 and using HeroDefault campaign rules.

Case 3:
1) I open a new character (Ctrl-N)
2) Change template to AI (or base or vehicle etc)
3) Change template to Heroic
4) Equipment tab shows up and pts are 0/0 and using HeroDefault campaign rules.

I believe there is something hinky with my templates and possibly campaign rules.

So I'm looking for direction with 2 things:
1) How/Can I link a campaign rules to a template (I would like to have my Councilof12 campaign rules loaded when I open a new Heroic template). I can always attach the rules manually, but it would make things much easier if it could be associated with a character template. I would be prefectly happy if this involves creating a "new" template called Councilof12 if required.
2) Switchin between character templates (Normal, Heroic or Superheroic) from the templates drop-down doesn't seem to be doing anything. I cannot get the equipment tab to show up unless I create a new character from template. However, if I switch from Superheroic to Base it does load the Base template. I am thinking that fixing this template thing will fix the campaign rules thing (above)

I was also thinking that it would be extremely useful and user friendly if the Templates dropdown were customisable somehow so that instead of Normal, Heroic, Superheroic I was able to change/alter/add options so that at a click of the button I could load my campaign templates. Perhaps a recently used list?

Thanks for your patience and continued excellence!

To make sure we're talking about the same things:

When you say that you're selecting the "Heroic template" you should be going to the Templates menu and selecting the radio button for "Heroic" -- that will give you the built in template.

So long as you're using the default Hero System campaign rules, this will also change the campaign rules over to the Heroic default (which will display an Equipment tab). If you have the campaign rules customized (to any file that you've created), then no change in the campaign rules will be made. This is very intentional and is really the only way to do things, when you think about it.

The status bar should read "Default Hero System" for the campaign rules if you want the change of template to have any effect on the rules..

I'll give some thought to a recently used template list.....may not be a bad idea.

Yes, we are talking about the same thing.

I did some playing around. As long as I have a specific campaign rules (non-default) created for each PC type (Normal, Heroic and SuperHeroic) all works as is supposed to. However, if I only have non-default campaign rules for a single sub-group (superheroic) changing the template (from the templates menu) has no effect. Actually I should say, if I try to change from a group I have a non-default campaign rules created to a group with the default campaign rules, there is a problem.

I just went ahead and created the campaign rules for Normal, Heroic and Superheroic and I'm back in business. Thanks!!

Just to be clear: you don't <em>need</em> to create campaign rules at all -- if you leave it set to "Hero System Default" HD will change things around on its own as you change templates.

Oh, certainly. But the problem is that we use the 1pt language penalties, language familiarity chart and I like to have the warnings turned on.

Another thing for consideration. An XML tag for <campaignrules> in the character templates would be invaluable. I'm not sure how many others are in this same position, but my group tends to swap around campaigns depending on our mood (and sometimes you need a break from your main campaign or want to play with a new rulebook or something). Switching between three different campaigns is rather cumbersome for Hero Designed (change the template, change the campaign rules). If I could create a template Circleof12.hdt that extended heroic.hdt (which extended main.hdt, of course) and have a <campaignrules> tag in Circleof12.hdt I wouldn't need to worry about tracking campaignrules and continually forgetting to change the campaign rules.

Thanks for all the help.

Try "Save As Template" and "New Character from Template"

Ahhah! I knew there must have been something simple I was missing. It makes imminent sense now that you mention it. Grumble grumble. Ah well, the important thing is that I got an answer...not that I kept missing it! :)

Thanks again.
