View Full Version : Possible Bug with Damage Resistance

Using the latest interim build (v2.39, downloaded Friday afternoon), I am working with the Demon Prince characters from the Bestiary Character Pack, using them to build converted creatures from the 4th Edition Bestiary.

A peculiarity occurs with Damage Resistance. When I modify the PD and/or ED on the Characteristics tab, the (pre-existing) Damage Resistance Power does not catch the changed totals.
Example: Using the Demon Prince of Strength, I alter the PD and ED from 30 down to 23 each.
The Damage Resistance Power still shows "30 total non-Resistant PD" and "30 total non-Resistant ED."

It isn't until I reduce the values for Damage Resistance to match the values on the Characteristics tab, save and then re-open the power that it shows the correct values (in the total captions).

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a real problem?

(I recognize that it could be because the Bestiary characters were created using HDv1. If that's the problem, sorry to have wasted your time.)

Thanks for any information you can provide!

That's not a bug, it's intentional. You can always purchase more Damage Resistance than you actually need. Making sure you have the right levels on any Power is up to you to handle. The furthest that HD will go is to highlight the value in red in the edit dialog of Damage Resistance.

At risk of speaking for Dan, that's not an error really. :) A character might wish to buy more Damage Resistance than he has PD or ED. For example, a character with 20 natural PD and 5 levels of Density Increase (which isn't always in use) might want to buy their Damage Resistance at 25 so that the defense they get from Density Increase is also resistant. Or someone might want to buy Damage Resistance at a higher value than their own PD/ED because it's a spell and the Damage Resistance will be Usable By Other or some such thing.

EDIT: D'oh! Dan and I must have been typing simultaneously. :)

Also useful for Transfers, and the like. There are lots of potential reasons for buying more Damage Resistance than one needs while at rest. It's good that Hero Designer is written to allow this.

I knew I didn't explain this right.

What appears to me to be wrong is that the total value shown for PD and ED isn't updating.
Not the amount of Damage Resistance purchased, the amount of PD and ED against which you CAN purchase Damage Resistance.

Remember that there is a caption (for lack of a better term) out to the right of the purchased value (of Damage Resistance). This caption echoes the amount of non-resistant PD and ED from the Characteristics tab.
This caption isn't updating when you change the Characteristic.

Does that make sense?

It's updating fine for me. Are you using the current version of the app?

If so, post the exact steps you're taking (starting with a blank character).

Oops. I was gonna tell you I hadn't done this with a new character, but I just tried it and it still breaks.

Steps:

1. Create a new character; choose Heroic from the Templates Menu.
2. On the Characteristics tab, set PD and ED to 30 each.
3. On the Powers tab, buy Damage Resistance, and purchase 30 each for PD and ED.
4. Go back to the Characteristics tab, and reduce PD and ED to 23.
5. On the Powers tab, double-click the Damage Resistance power.
(Damage Resistance is still purchased for 30 points each.)

Note that the captions still read "30 total non-Resistant PD" and "30 total non-Resistant ED" even though those Characteristics have changed.

Edit: I just re-downloaded the interim build (v2.39) and tried again, with the same results.

Incidentally, if you buy 25 PD/ED, then buy DR for 25 PD/ED and then change your PD/ED to 30, and then open up DR again, the "caption" as we're calling it, does in fact reflect the new PD/ED values. So it seems to only not update those values when the characteristics are changed to be greater than the purchased DR.

Dunno if this helps at all.

Bump.

Just wanted to check to see if you came to a conclusion on this one.

Try the current interim build.

The issue was only cosmetic in the edit dialog -- it has no bearing on functionality or point calculations.

Yep, that performs the way I originally expected it to behave.

Thank you, Dan!
I know this was definitely nit-picky, but thanks anyway.
