I've never heard of The Books of Magic, but I'd enjoy an urban fantasy campaign.

I'd describe TBoM - the original four issues, written by Neil Gaiman - as a guided tour of the mystic side of the DC Universe.
The main character, Timothy Hunter, is a teen living in London, who one day gets a visit from four mysterious strangers, all dressed in trenchcoats: The Stranger, Doctor Occult, Mister E, and everyones favourite, John Constantine. They tell him that he has the potential to become this eras most powerful magician, and that he must choose, either to remain a regular Joe, never to have any truck with magic and lead a peaceful, non-eventful life, or to embark on a journey that will be sure to give him thrills to last him a lifetime - and that will just be the beginning . . .
Tim accepts. The Stranger shows him the past, Constantine the present, Doc Occult takes him to other worlds, and Mister E shows him his future . . .

Great Series!
I look at is as what could have been a great movie too before another young boy with a talent for magic and a pet owl shows up (Harry Potter). Almost everything in the Harry Potter books was done first in the Books of Magic series. Sad.

Well, as Neil Gaiman has remarked, Tim and Harry are probably based on and inspired by the same Archetype - the Magician's Apprentice. Literature is full of earlier versions, so . . .
But you're right; whatever people may say, The Books Of Magic were first!

Ok, I'm really dredging through the ol grey matter. Circa 1990 or so, I have a vision of a comic book or three called the Books of Magic. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to own some of them (if memory serves). This is them, neh?

Eh . . . Probably.
I think the original four episodes were published like in 1994 . . .

Sigh. You are tempting me to wander through the boxes. Ack. I SO need to get ComicBase so I can inventory. But I think it's costed out too high for widespread distribution. So I keep putting if off. Sigh.
