View Full Version : The Invisibles Writeups

This is my 25,000th post, and it seemed appropriate to stay on topic and take a risk...
I am not that great at character write-ups. I don't have the efficiency edge some do, nor do I have a great attention to detail. It's fine to be that way writing NPCs (there's the "I know what I mean" paradigm, so even in combat if you forget something you can just correct it on the fly), and even for a PC of one's own, it's quick and easy to overcome as, after all, one is making it up themselves. But for established characters...well, I suck, IMHO.
But I loved the Incredibles and unless I missed it, I didn't see whole writeups yet, which surprises me. I might easily have missed it, I'm behind on some threads, but they aren't in the two or three major Incredibles threads I'm aware of and I did a quick search on "Incredibles" and didn't see anything.
So I am taking the plunge and contributing for my 25K post the Incredibles...please use it as a basis for refinement, of course.
I did Mr. Incredible and Elasti-girl as standard 350 point characters for orthodoxy. I did Violet and Dash as lower totals, without worrying too much about it or trying to pad to 350, as that seemed suitable.
WIthout further ado...and I'll be glad to discuss the rationale if anyone asks...

Thanks! I very likely will, actually, but later as these took more time than I thought - coming up with 150 disads is hard based on the glimpses we got in the movie.
(SPOILER ALERT)
Whoops, I see when I copied and pasted distinctive phrases from Mr. Incredible to Dash, I left in "show time," which Dash never says. He does often say "uh-oh". I tend to think that's worth 5 points - after all, a more knowledgable villain would have known something bad was about to happen when Dash said "uh-oh" just before the hovercraft slammed into the mountainside.

The +30 was suggested in that original thread, was that you who did so? Someone reputable here did. I guess I didn't consider that he used this for the robot (good call, maybe) and am not sure still as he seems to be able to lift the robot "normally". I was thinking more of when he ripped himself from the holding device in Syndrome's lair. And was trying to emulate a compromise between a plot device and HERO rules.
PS - hey, no worries about nit-picking, really! I'm interested in that sort of thing.
PPS - and extra END probably does make more sense or even as an additional qualifier.

Yeah, there is, that's the main reason I really hope Ben will correct the title of this and why I posted the other thread referring to this boo-boo. It's a somewhat controvesial Vertigo title. I like it, but not love it. It's a Grant Morrison work with all the attending virtues and vice of his work.
As to the write-ups, thanks!

Very nice Zorn and congrats!
I am curious if you had a specific reason for giving Elasti-Girl such a low CON as it actually costs more points to make up for it via increasing REC, END and STUN individually? I think motherhood qualifies as a good enough reason to give her at least a 23-25.

First, thanks not just to you but to others for the encouragement. I'm glad they came off okay. They're characters that are instant classics and so I took building them seriously (to the extent one should take these things seriously :) ). Tangent - I wonder if in the future the movie will be shown at Thanksgiving on TV and celebrated in much the same way as (the inferior) Wizard of Oz? I hope so! I intend to create that tradition in any case once we get the DVD.
As to your question, it's a good one. From an efficiency perspective I should do as you suggest, but I tried to build them "purely" and not resort to those so-called tricks except as necessary. Of course a valid point could be made that her CON is indeed higher. I kept it lower, though, primarily because I felt, at the time, like she's about that "fragile" (on a super-scale) in terms of actual CON rolls and in terms of being just a tad more than double human CON (at the +5 = x2 scale, which, whether we agree or not (I don't actually) it's orthodox HERO). HOWEVER, that being said, now that you focus on that, I think I should add at least a few points of CON (not sure if I would really go past 20) and not be paying the extra points on derived characteristics, particularly as I also think that the derived characteristics, to your point, indicate that her CON really si a bit higher than I was thinking at first. Thanks, Hyper-man.

Well, if you're accepting quibbles (;)), may I suggest putting Violet's Force Wall into a MP with FF useable by others simultaneously, up to four others? At first I thought her Force Wall was Mobile, but Dash can carry her at nearly full speed while the Force Wall is up, and that level of Mobile is very expensive. Also, she may have some level of Feedback on her Force walls, or maybe extra power that costs Extra End; when the wall was breached by the robot, she was either exhausted or stunned, even though the robot never actualy managed to hit her.
Not trying to take anything away from the designs; Just tinkering. :)

A FW doesn't have to be UBO, does it? You can just enclose others in a FW, casting it at range as necessary.
As to the mobile bit with Dash, I took it as a Power Trick by both her and Dash - perhaps that's fudging it but that was my impression. Though if I did it as you suggest I'd probably limit the UBO and make it less expensive, as it's only UBO if they are doing something specific, they can't really cast or manipulate the FW itself even if she wanted them to.
No worries about tinkering, I like getting feedback, I'd like these to end up as the best possible writeups, which takes help like yours and Hyper-man's.
Good point about the robot, but here's my dilemma - she seems to cast the FWs effortlessly in the battles, and only when the robot smashed hard did it burst. I THINK that the robot actually performed a special maneuver by catching the FW like an egg between two surfaces that would not give and basically transmitted a sort of shockwave. I think...
PS - remember, also, she had no problem when the FW completely smashed 2 of the hovercrafts (though those DO seem kinda fragile as I think about it - Syndrome must have skimped on his hovercraft funding!).

Is 10 OCV + taking time to aim enough to make the long-range headshot with the coconut against the agent? Should be OK, since he was standing still and taken by surprise.
It's hard to add stuff on, since you were going for a specific point total on the adults, but I'm musing over whether Deduction would be appropriate for Mr Incredible and Elastigirl. Mr I, for example, figures out the dead hero's message blasted in the wall, and that it's the password, pretty quickly.

The Force Wall doesn't need Useable By Others; the Force Field slot of the MP would take that, with the special effect being that it still looked like a Force Wall. That way she and Dash can do the Hamster Ball without putting a ton of Mobile on the Force Wall. On the other hand, making it a power stunt works as well. :)
I agree it's a tough call on the feedback. Treating it as a special maneuver by the robot is fine, or saying that she was Pushing to hold off the robot and that the wall went down because she ran out of END.

I think it's okay, as you have a Set and Brace there. CSLs just got expensive and it's hard to keep within 350!
Re Deduction, agreed. I fudged by leaving on Tactics and letting that cover it for now. I did think about that. One could argue dropping Tactics or something and adding that in, to me it becomes a 50/50 proposition when having to keep within 350.
Good points, thank you.

Pushing makes sense, and could also be that the FW has increased toughness that requires her to pay extra END, kind of like Dad and his increased STR. It is hellaciously strong, I think the writeup may even be too low by a bit but FW really is expensive (in fact, compared to FF and Armor I do kind of buy the argument from another thread that it might be overpriced).
(yeah, I know, I said I was going to concentrate on work, but this is more fun! But I'll be back off shortly for the rest of the day, depending upon temptation.)
PS - and sorry, I missed you indicated FF, not FW, at first. I dunno, FW seems so specific to what she does and even given SFX I'm just not sure if I like fudging into a "Force Wall Force Field," but this also runs along the lines of the pricing discussion.

I don't buy Dash's super Dex and SPD. I don't see his base CV as being anywhere near his parent's level. It looked like he had to abort to avoid being hit by that agent. And in terms of combat actions, he mostly just used movement - he didn't really seem to have a high speed. I'd probably give him lots of movement, but lower dex and spd than his folks.

I see the DEX and the SPD as opposed to the CV!
I'm thinking in terms of his turn on a dime, grabbing the vine and swinging successfully with little experience, great catching with hand-eye prediction, and what I think his reaction time was like. My opinion is that for him the "doesn't know powers" disad should perhaps be more limiiting, but then again he learned really quickly to do some running tricks.
However, you're probably right about the SPD as I think about it, I need to revisit the running and the per-turn effects and such. I still think his SPD wouldn't be below 4 (he seems to pretty clearly get in actions more than a high-end guard who presumably is a 3), so that leaves 4 or 5. He does seem to have dodges to spare, though - I think he did aborts and then had actions to burn, re the agents. The problem is any real strike hurts him, but note that he was really DEXy/SPDy at grabbing vines and the liike to break his fall.
Also as to DEX I do tend to over-rank speedsters. It's worthy of consideration, anyway.
What values are you thinking?
Kristopher
Dec 2nd, '04, 07:23 PM
IMO, Dash's quick reaction time and short interval between distinct actions justifies the 6 SPD. The DEX might be a bit high, though.
Of course, as with all character constructions, this is where personal assumptions of scale will come into play, as the highest DEX I've ever given any NPC for any reason was 33.

I was thinking around 18-20 Dex and 4 SPD. I was thinking that tricks relating to super speed would make the difference with the Dex and eye hand stuff. Buy Acceleration advantages and movement skill levels for stopping and turning on a dime. Rapid Senses and some PSLs versus movement will make some part of his super speed act like a person in normal speed as far as penalties go.
I'd also remove some of the Hand Attack and replace it with autofire. He didn't seem to do a whole lot of damage in his stand up fight on top the hover-shredder, even when he hit the agent many times. That seems alot like the effect of an autofire attack versus (comparatively) high defenses.

I'd also give them some kind of super-teamwork ability. Something along the line of: Danger sense and defence manouver (only when fighting together), due to the way they cover each other's backs and a close range mindlink to represent the way they know each other so well that they know what each other is doing.

Well, I can easily understand your approach. The problem with my ideas is that they essentially suck. My way, you save points by taking less Dex, then spend a bunch of points to buy back some of the benefits of Dex (and other minor flavor stuff that quickly adds up) but not all. Less effectiveness for about the same amount of points.
Maybe a better idea would be to keep the super Dex, but do "No CV, -1/2" or something on the last ten. The kid can buy it off as he learns to fight.

It's a good idea but: a) just maxed out the points for the parents; b) I think a lot of this is reflected in giving the parents Tactics and Teamwork; and c) IMHO a lot of the cool teamwork isn't reflected in points in general, it's reflected (in RPGs) by the time we allow people to make decisions and the SPD chart (i.e., the luxury of having more actions than "regular" people).
However, to your point, they certainly should immediately do Teamwork. I should have given Violet and Dash Teamwork at 14/-, and just not Tactics. Will do that on v2.
And I appreciate your view, I'm not trying to debate anyone in the thread, exactly, but want to explain my opinions. I'd think more seriously about your view if/when I do an unlimited points version.

Oooooh, I like it!
I'm going to do some "mindless" catching up on the boards and need to do more work on my own campaign, but later this weekend will definitely do v2s and, to answer freakboy6117's post, do Jack Jack.
My own feeling is that Jack Jack's core powers will be some sort of fire-related thing but rather than go from my speculative opinion I'm going to go with what someone (OddHat?) basically suggested about an NCC VPP, will give it more thought as I get into it more.
Minor bummer note - I had hoped to see The Incredibles again this weekend but turns out we're going to see 2 movies anyway, one animated feature (the mob story thing from Dreamworks) and the other one I've been dying ot see anyway, End of the Century, the Ramones documentary. Between those, work (I have to get some work done Sunday), practice (Sunday PM), and my own campaign work I seriously doubt I'll have time to see the movie. Although if I get caught up on work by 1 PM or therabouts on Sunday I might go again.
Then again I shouldn't moan, it'll be time #4 if I'm so lucky this weekend. :)

I finally got to see this wonderful movie yesterday. I had to play the "it's my birthday" card to get the wife to agree and she thanked me for it.
First off: great write ups but...why did you feel the need to force Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible into 350 points? They are both obviously highly experienced and Mr. Incredible, from what I gathered, was considered one of the best heroes of his time. That's worth a few XP don't you think?
Anyway, great write-ups  Now. if someone would do an Edna Mode writeup....

Finally saw The Incredibles today -- fabulous movie!
One interesting note is that Sydnrome's agents were a lot more supers-savvy than agents usually are in comics and media. One in particular got very close to actually managing to shoot Violet and actually used all kinds of anti-invisibility tricks to detect her. He knew there was an invisble opponet around, and he used various ingenious means to figure out where she was. Violet was lucky to live through the encounter.
The kids actually did come across as very inexperienced in using their powers in combat. They were clever, but they didn't know any of the trcisk that a more experienced hero would know as a matter of course. Dash, for example, was surprisingly easy to hit for a speedster -- he'd never been in combat before and didn't know to keep his entire body moving at all times just enough to make himself more difficult to hit. Since their inexperience nearly got both Violet and Dash killed, it's good to see it reflected in their writeups.
Jack-Jack is very difficult to model. being an infant, he has a very limtied grasp of his surroundings, but seems to recognize danger and instinctively react to it. he seems to be an extremely powerful metamorph who can change himself into any form of matter or energy (lead, pure heat) or into other types of creatures. When he gets older he'll be perhaps the family member with the most raw power.

Here's Dash v2. Mainly I took up Victim's idea of DEX -1/2 for part of his DEX; given his abilities against pretty good guards I kept his base DEX at 20 so he'd get a CV of 7, the other 17 of his DEX being "no CV". This doesn't show up very well as HERO Designer (understandably) can't differentiate what isn't being derived from DEX so bear that in mind. I also gave him Teamwork and as someone else suggested modified his HA to be less dice but Autofire; I steered to try to give him enough dice to be useful still in his Move-Through in knocking down an Agent but keeping it limited enough that a little gets through against Agents, with Autofire being needed (at his current age/power) to pile on the stun.

All I did with Mr. Incredible, aside from notes, was to alter his Disad to be "expresses his feelings/revelations audibly" rather than simply be catch phrases.

First the OmniDroid, which I wanted to get the points to in order to squeeze it into Syndrome's sheet. It was a bit hard to estimate how to make it inflict enough damage and have enough armor and still be able to have it damage itself quite so easily. I basically made the Armor twice-hardened but its own Claws 3x-amor-piercing, and added "Vulnerable to Self, x2". This allows it to easily damage itself - once you figure out how to get it to do so.

Here's Syndrome. Note I built the OmniDroid as a Follower, and gave it a -2 Limitation of "Independent"; I know this isn't orthodox for a Follower, and perhaps the OmniDroid's own Disad about preserving its life with total commitment, which Syndrome let slip by, is enough to not worry about it, but given that this "Follower" has such a major limitation in being Independent, I'm leaving it on this build. Technically, though, it probably shouldn't be there, but I can't leave the OmniDroid at its high value on his sheet without limiting the cost in my mind.
I also built him a Custom Talent to represent his plot device of getting the drop so easily on other supers - I felt this was very important, though, as without this Talent he just doesn't last long, and I feel it should be represented in game terms. This might be controversial, but I really like it. It's probably too cheap for what it is, but it's not a power one would give to a PC anyway.
I wasn't sure what else to add to his Control Bracelet, based on the movie. I didn't want to just leave it as a VPP, though, as he didn't seem to really function that way. However, I still may rethink that. I also might rebuild that as a simpler power as an Energy Blast with Variable Advantages and Lims, which might better represent its actual usage. Still, I think this best reflects the movie as we know things. Note that I separated out his Zero-Point Energy controlling ray because it just blows the frameworks up too much to either stick it into a VPP or MP with other stuff, so just a pragmatic concern there.

Actually, I reccomend making the Zero-Point Energy AoE 1 Hex - Accurate. Since Selective requires attack rolls against enemies' normal CV and since Syndrome has a normal's CV, he'd be rather ineffective attacking in that fashion. Also, he seems to only snag groups when they're standing close together. He could be spreading his attack when he nails the entire family. Not sure how the math works out, but you could take the points from dropping the AoE to +1/2 and buy some TK "only for spreading" -1/2 or whatever. Of course, you need to remove the beam limitation.

When Syndrome holds the whole family, the mother and father are definitely in a different hex than the kids, so I agree it'd at least have to be spread. I didn't think you could spread an AoE? I did reread the rule just now and it doesn't seem to say either way, but I'm a bit suspicious. I'll ask Steve re spreading and AoE specifically. It seems a little abusive (given AoE gives you a 3 DCV target and spreading it can be highly effective when instead I would think a GM would typically require you buy a larger AoE). But the rules seem to allow for it by ommission. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll probably incorporate something like that one way or another as I think about it to make the attack more reasonably-costed at least.

Actually, the "spreading" could just as easily be Rapid Attack...

That's an interesting point, or even Autofire itself, just 2 (maybe more, not clear from the movie) shots, 1 hex each. As an aside, to its strength, we know the ZPE can pick up an oil tanker, presumably a full one as when firing it Syndrome wouldn't be sure if it had contents or not but conidently grabbed it.
Another possibility, as raised from an entirely separate question elsewhere, is an NND Entangle, which might make sense, linked with enough TK to actually move around that which is Entangled. The defense would presumably being simply being able to block the beam, easy to do if you're not already Entangled, but pretty darn hard once you're snagged.

Good write-up on Syndrome. My only objection is that he looked more buff than what an 8 STR would have given him. You might want to upgrade this a bit.

Maybe, but I'm more tempted towards RPMiller's suggestion. He got knocked out pretty easily when flying into the building (and was out for a while, GM's discretion!) and seems to be so reliant on his gadgets he doesn't seem like he developed any real strength. Of course he does have to fly and navigate, so maybe he should at least be a few higher, though I'm trying to fight my tendency towards stat inflation.
One thing I realized later today - I didn't give him any defenses! I'll do a v2 (and may add some STR then, unsure) and give him some more PD/ED out of the presumption his costume affords him some (similar to how Edna's costumes afford protection, seems to be a standard explanation), but he really does seem to be susceptible to getting hit and such, so I don't want to go too far.
PS - and thanks!

I wrote it as a Ranged Radar, that's what that was intended to replicate.
PS - and the range was so it could be done at range, though perhaps I should have taken Indirect? But that's not offered, as I recall, for Enhanced Senses.
Kristopher
Dec 18th, '04, 09:44 PM
Indirect and Transdimensional aren't, unfortunately, allowed for Senses, IIRC. I think the official build is Clairsentience.
Chuckg
Dec 18th, '04, 09:54 PM
Nope. I don't know about Indirect, but Transdimensional is a legitimate sense modifier in 5e. (Costs +10 points) It's used in Mystic World to create things like "Astral Sight", and then there's 5e Revised, which rolled it into the core rules.

Last I checked, Hero Designer put up a giant red falg when I tried adding the Transdimensional Advantage to a character's IR Sight.
(To simulate her ability to see through shadows and into the Shadow Realm, or from the Shadow Realm back into the normal world.)

Oh, definitely. I was referring to the Transdimensional Adder, under Enhanced Senses, built for precisely this purpose.

I'll have to check that when I get home. I haven't noticed it in Hero Designer yet. On a positive note, my copy of Mystic World should be here by Friday.

I suppose Clairsentience is reasonable, I had spaced on that somehow even though I've certainly had PCs with it for this sort of thing. I should probably redo it in v2 as that with some appropriate limitations.

It's not legal to spread an AoE attack, it's on page 380 of 5ER, as Steve pointed out, I just missed it the other night, it says specifically "Characters may not spread attacks that affect an area (such as...any power with the Area of Effect...Advantages)".
So either a slightly expanded AoE beyond a hex with Selective or Autofire with the +1/4 AoE. I'm inclined to go towards the latter with 2 shots, I don't get the impression he could do a whole lot.

Finally saw the movie Sunday, so I can read these threads now :) .
Nice writeups, my only real comment is that I would have called Mr Incredible's extra STR either Limited Conscious Control or No Conscious Control. He seems to have a bit of a problem controlling his super-strength when he's ticked off (see the fingerprints in the car roof), and of course when he thinks his family is dead and goes Enraged ....

Thanks much. NCC or Limited CC sounds good. Might do that, but not for a while, I saw the movie today (7th time, yes I am a fanatic) and really want to do the others.
Also, as to the discussion above re Syndrome's ZPE hold, I realized today that the reason he gets off 2 separate shots is simple, one shot is from each of his 2 wrist controls, so it's an instance of 2 Foci/Weapons going off in the same phase. I have to double-check the rules on duplicated Foci, two-handed fighting, and multi-power attacks, but that will straighten out his ability for sure to hit 2 target hexes.

Okay, here's Frozone. Although we saw a reasonable bit of him, I found it hard to do - it's implied he can probably do even more with ice powers, though I stopped shy of giving him Variable Advantages. It was a bit hard to boost his power level to 350, but I think it really should be, as in a full write-up Mr. Incredible would certainly be more, and bear in mind as Mr. Incredible flips through Syndrome's computer, the supers that the Omnidroids fought go up in power (note there's a power level in the upper right of each super's profile, though we don't see Frozone's or Elasti-girl's, but we know Mr. Incredible is 9.1 (IIRC, it's 9.x at least) and the power level goes up more or less as he thumbs through each Omnidroid's opponent chronologically), and Frozone was, based on Mirage's surveillance, somewhere fairly soon on the list and presumably not too far below Mr. Incredible.
A few things I'd like to explain right off - given his handling of the police and his earliest comments on dealing with superwomen and his general appeal, I figured while his general PRE isn't THAT high, he is "charming" hence the Skill Levels with Conversation, Persuasion, and (not in the movie directly but I figured) Seduction, and this goes to explaining why a policeman (even a rookie one, obviously he's a nervous kid) would let him "drink his drink". The "small personal base" is a reflection of, if you noticed, the various "stuff" behind the fake wall, it doesn't look like just Mr. Incredible's den with memories of old days, looks like he has a computer and such. I figured he MUST be well-off, given that he has a nice apartment right downtown near the financial district, and given the snazzy way he has his personal stuff hidden behind a rather high-tech switchable wall. Re the powers, I might have hyped his MP too much but I wanted to be sure he could variably switch through stuff as needed plus I think, as stated, he's probably fairly powerful, it's just hard to tell as we only saw him against the final Omnidroid, which was too much even for Mr. Incredible alone, and before that just dealing with normals (NB - note he was carrying a couple and could still run, hence a little STR). Re Disads, hard to fit in 150, so I admit a couple are probably overstated a bit. The interesting thing, and I think what I reasonably hit, is that while he has heroic ambitions to protect people, he very much wants to obey the law (remember, he's not keen on going out for "bowling night" and deceiving everyone); so I gave him 3 relevant Disads, one is that he certainly will protect against grave danger (note he is inflexible in wanting to stop the Omnidroid, not even "the greatest good you'll ever have" stops him :) ), another is that he is a good friend to Mr. Incredible (so he allows himself to get mixed up in heroics again even against small threats), and finally he really wants to do what society and his wife are asking him. I included the "honesty" with that as I noticed it was interesting his wife, who clearly didn't know or see the Omnidroid, wasn't surprised that he wanted to go out and do some "daring-do" so I strongly suspect he's told her of some sort of occassions of such, though probably not the most recent so-called bowling nights (although maybe so, given that was almost 2 months before the Omnidroid attack). You miay wonder why I gave him 2d6 of Unluck; that was done to reflect that he seems to suffer from bad timing/events. Note that the Omnidroid attack comes exactly when his wife has his supersuit removed, and he and Mr. Incredible both fall into the jewelry store, looking like "bad guys - incompetent bad guys!"
Okay, without further ado, here's Frozone!

And for Christmas...here's Edna Mode!
I went to town, but not unrealistically so, I think, given the impression she makes in the film. :)
By the way, I found great file photos from Pixar for all the characters, those will be added to uploads going backwards. To save space on the boards, the oldest (v1) writeups are being eliminated for those characters with a v2. They are available upon request. Later I'll also put stuff up on my site and link to here as KS has done on his site and save the HERO boards the space, just too lazy right now.
(PS - whoops, yuck, I noticed the export dropped some details, added now)

Sure, I'm going to revise Snyndrome so he's not quite ready - in fact probably best to wait until I've gotten more feedback (if any) for Frozone and Edna as well.
Please let me know which specific format you'd like, I imagine you must have some standards for how you prefer the Hero Designer files output. If not I'll send you one of the HTML versions.

I don't klnow if anyone's pointed this out yet but you forgot Social Limitation: Secret ID
Remember "Your identities are your most valuable asset"
Which is why the Kids need 'super names' (apart from Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack)

I think the reason I left them off was that I was sort of taking a mid-late movie snapshot and that stuff kicks in relatively late, nonetheless, you're right, I'll add them, they actually were relevant early on (in the context of hiding powers, whether an identity yet).
Okay, I added those, kept them as "..._v2" and edited the above posts accordingly for Dash and Violet. (Mike if you're reading the versions you're getting are these up to date ones)

Maybe I missed something but Dash's 'autofire' punches didn't look all that effective to me. I mean he hit a minion several times in quick sucession and the minion was able to shake it off in a moment (post segment 12 Recovery?) and hit Dash (who may, I grant you, have jumped given what followed). At the very most all he did was distract the minion long enough to make him run into a wall. Giving him any kind of effective HA (let alone +2d6 autofire) is going a little far in my opinion. He might hit a hundred times in quick succession but it won't actually *hurt*.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

It comes down to the children's inexperience. Given time, Dash will learn to focus his speed into power, just as given time Violet will learn to toughen her forcefields and make them more reliable. As it is, now, both are novice superheroes at best, with plenty of raw power but little experience or skill.
It's hard to model the sort of inexperience in stat terms because stats model, in a sense, potential. Even if you give the characters disadvantages they will have to buy off as they get experience, it's hard to exactly model the effects of knowing you CAN do stuff but not knowing precisely HOW.

It's easy to model that... it's called experience points. ;)

Yeah, but I think those agents were fairly tough. I believe the way I wrote it up he would barely penetrate on each strike. The first agent, the one driving the hovercraft, was going to go down, I think, when Dash looked up and saw they were about to hit the cliff, though Dash would have had to get just a few more licks in. The guard seemed stunned (in the true sense, not at 0 STUN). Obviously, YMMV (and does, that's cool). I'm just explaining my thoughts on the matter.

Also true, and hence their disads. Thanks Michael.

(PS) IMHO, not really. Bear in mind when a PC first starts in a campaign, he usually has a pretty solid idea of how to use his powers - and those who don't (IME) tend to take a Disad which they later buy off.

These agents were something else typical RPG Agents are not -- smart. They were used to dealing with super-powered opposition and knew how to deal with them. The one agent who stalked Violet pulled out many low-tech but highly effective tricks for trying to locate an invisble opponent, and was about ten seconds away from putting several bullets into her.
By contrast, Dash and Violet were very inexperienced. They didn't know what they could do on the isnticitve level posessed by most PCs. Under life-threatening stress for the first time, they came very close to being overwhelmed by panic. Violet, for example, didn't realize that an invisble character who stays in one place will eventually be detected by a halfway-savvy opponent even without superpowers.
Dash and Violet had NO training. Their parents evidently never expected them to find themselves in combat, certainly not while they were still children, and so they were not prepared at all. And it nearly got them both killed.

And all that reminds me of why that was SUCH AN AWESOME MOVIE!!!!!!!! Sorry, I know it was a little off subject.

(PS) IMHO, not really. Bear in mind when a PC first starts in a campaign, he usually has a pretty solid idea of how to use his powers - and those who don't (IME) tend to take a Disad which they later buy off.I hear what you are saying and agree. I think my approach to the last couple games I've run has given me a different perspective. In both the games, the PCs started out not knowing their powers and had to learn them going forward. I think a really good role-player could also pull it off where they have an idea of where they want to go with their character, but start with just a basic use of combat and the use of their powers, and as the game progresses plays it the way they want to be. IMO.
Nonetheless, I think your writeups to date have been really great! I love how you handled Edna! Excellent!

As to the comment about your last games, I've always wanted to do that but...haven't. I've always thought that would be fun, thanks for bringing it up and the input.
PS - very glad you liked Edna, actually, she's a real labor of love, like most people I was deeply impressed with her character. In the end, despite an earlier answer in a poll, Mr. Incredible is my "favorite" as he really is the closest to me and I suspect many people react almost on a demographic basis to the characters as they are so well-written and true-to-life. I was really taken with Mr. Incredible's quote "I was so obsessed with under-valuing myself I under-valued all of you," which hits too close to home.

Here's Elasti-Girl v2, I added Offensive Ranged Disarm, and tweaked her CON and resulting scores a bit as previously discussed.
Incoming rules lawyer. :)
Stretching is always considered to be Hand-to-Hand combat, not Ranged; she shouldn't use the Ranged Martial Arts with her stretching, just the standard Martial Disarm.
(I'm assuming that you meant the Ranged Martial Arts with that ... if not, please slap me with a fish, then ignore me.)
But, if I haven't already, allow me to toss in my appreciation of your excellent work.

Any other comments on Frozone or Edna or Syndrome before I finalize? Syndrome I'll fix the ZPE thing by making it on two wrist Foci and ensuring he can two-hand attack, I just haven't checked the rules thoroughly yet. I'm also going to give him a little Armor or something just as a general balance issue, and probably make him a good bit harder to hit (probably ensuring he has skills not to be surprised and all that, I have to review) as you'll note that while the Omnidroid hit him little else does - in fact Mr. Incredible misses with a tree despite his obviously high OCV otherwise in the movie! Of course what makes this harder is that there's a lot of plot device stuff involved.
Possibly Syndrome should just be faster? That gives him aborts and explains a lot - make him SPD 8 perhaps?? What do you guys think?

While I love Edna, and your write up is excellent, I personally wouldn't use the transformation attack. Instead, I'd use a massive science and knowledge skill list, and maybe a gadget pool that only gets changed in the lab. She'd use the gadget pool to build the special costumes, hand them over, and the Supers involved would pay points to keep them. If she were a PC, her house would be worth a bare minimum of 350 points, making it a 70 point perk for her. Access is only for bases, unless I'm misremembering the power description; if she wants access to Superheroes, that's a contact.
As always, IMO only. :)

The little bugger should have at least a one or two point speed advantage on the incredibles, and lightning reflexes or extra DEX through gadgets; he's always getting the drop on them.

Hmm... I still think it'd be funny to give Edna some kind of power based on her ability to completely overwhelm people by sheer force of personality (it need not be the one I thought of in the other thread on her). I also began to think, later on, that her ability to assess supers' abilities might transcend the Analyze skill (which is meant more for in-combat analysis) and actually be something along the lines of Detect Superpowers as a Sense, Ranged and Discrimnatory (which is either 17 or 22 points depending on how big a group you decide Superpowers is; I was looking at the Detect Magic example in FREd).

IMO, it's better to resist the trend to make everything into a Power.
Edna should (again IMO) have no Powers, just scads of Skills, some Skill Levels, and maybe a Talent if appropriate. Nothing she does in the movie requires a Power to pull off.

It could be argued that she is really a plot device of the GM's to allow the characters to rationalize the costumes that they wear.
I have a similar "costume wizard" in my campaign that I have never written up. The players just go to him and say they would like yadda yadda, and he creates the costume for them and they pay the points to have the new "features". If it just a new look with the same "features", it is simply a roleplaying exercise.
I never really saw the need to write up every single NPC or device or car with stats, unless those stats were going to be very important to the game, and have never had any complaints from my players. Supervillains; stats yes. Local librarian; stats no. Super death ray; stats yes. Magic portal to "other dimension"; stats no (assuming that it is an adventure plot device). YMMV.

Thanks. I almost went with a VPP but I got carried away and did the Transformation - don't forget she also has Base points so she can do other stuff in that, though arguably none of that could leave the base of course. I dunno, I'm inclined to stay with the Transformation "just because"! "I got so excited, I had to continue!"

I'm not so sure about Detect. I think selecting Jack Jack's suit to go against fire (whoops that reminds me, I still have to write him up, though that's not going to be very meaningful) was foreshadowing, and otherwise I tend to think that she's just going on experience and biochemistry and biophysics (I need to change physics to biophysics really) knowledge, plus what she knows about the supers as it's not hard to figure out from there. IMHO, no disrespect to your take on it.
While I like the idea of her overwhelming people as you suggest, I don't get the sense that she goes beyond what I'd consider excellent Persuasion in games, we didn't get to see her convince someone of something they wouldn't do, again IMHO. Just giving you my perspective, not trying to dissuade you.
The world's big enough for more than one write-up of Edna. ;)

Yeah, I don't stat up almost any of my NPCs with as much detail as these. That's a big reason I'm nervous about doing character write-ups for all to see, I just don't do the kind of detailed, excellent work I see others such as you and Enforcer84 and Lightray and Worldmaker and so on do.

Um...while I appreciate the compliment, I think your work on the Incredibles has been top rate, and I've enjoyed all of the campaign materials you've been willing to share. As to my own NPCs, I do detailed write-ups of heroes and villains, and short write ups of anyone that the characters will be interacting with regularly, but unless the character is going to be played or used in combat I don't worry too much about stats. For me, the back story and personality profile are the most important parts of the character. The stats I can do in ten minutes or less, and the players will never know; the stories are the hard part.

Thanks, I appreciate the response I wasn't really trying to be self-effacing, btw, I just literally don't go to that effort re writing characters for others to use to the extent you and others have, so just from lack of doing it as well as noting how well many of you have actually done it I can say "... I don't do the kind of detailed, excellent work..." As to campaign material, I, without hubris I think, can say I am confident that my work stands up and I don't feel nervous or lack confidence on posting it.
Actually I'm glad nobody else wrote up the Incredibles first, it gave me the incentive to really sit down and write them up properly, an excellent exercise.
I think this is dead on, "The stats I can do in ten minutes or less, and the players will never know; the stories are the hard part." But the thing that you and others have done with character write-ups for the board is written up powers and such attentively so that they really can be used by someone, as well as given lots of great background (story) info.

I think this was a really cool exercise. When Kly runs for us, he usually creates our characters for us, based on what we tell him we want them to be able to do. From this (lack of) experience, most of us (I exclude DocMan, who creates his own characters and brings them to Kly for GM's approval) have no clue about the work involved in statting up a character, and some of us have difficulty reading our own character sheets. What makes this excercise so cool for me is that, for approximately the first time, I read someone else's character sheet, and understood what they were talking about. This is no small feat.
Thank you, Zornwill. I appreciate this very much. Maybe I can consider running Champions now, and giving Kly a break -- even if that does mean he'll have to help me run combat for a while. I hate running combat. That's the main reason that I only run White Wolf games -- I make a great storyteller. :)

Since he has a general -1 on the "limited power" aspect and since that's fudgey and plot-devicey and very GM discretion but with a liberal tint, I just wrote in the "limited conscious control" into the Limited Power lim, just FYI.

Oh, sure, you couldn't catch that earlier... :D
I'll have to modify that, I didn't correct for the additive effect, I think that was due to the fact that the HKA showed the total dice but this didn't so I didn't think about it, just treated the 15d6 as the total.
But I just realized that's not quite so easy to fix - how do you apply Standard Effect to a base characteristic? I don't want to sell all the STR back and then have to buy a Multipower...though maybe that's the best solution, actually (an MP with HKA, HA, and STR).

In the movie we are led to believe he dyed it to keep it as it was in his younger days when Elasti-girl is upset and talking to Edna and she includes on the list of behavioral changes "the blonde hair". I infer that his hair was going grey or such and he, as had become more popular with guys back when the movie was actually written, had dyed it blonde. I don't recall the exact quote but having watched it 7 times I feel reasonably comfortable that it's deliberately implied.
