I play currently in three different gaming groups (Ahh... the life of a bachelor) and have began to recognize that I am a bit of a social chameleon. I (the Player) act and play differently with different people. My Characters act differently, but retain some heavy gamer points of view.
While "the gamer point of view" may not be considered by some to be Role playing. I consider it a integral part. Some of the players in those games do not agree. That's normal.
Character Creation vs. Character Concept:
I start building my characters story first. Then I try to figure out how to get there, and last I build the character for survival.
You may view these as contray points of view, but I see them differentlty. Let's start with the last.
"I build characters to survive". Basicly what this means is I review the RPG's Mechanics and decide what I need to survive. Not just tactics, but skills, powers, abilities, etc... I had a few characters die in rapid order before coming to this conclusion. It wasn't just about tactics it was about survivability.
"Character Background". I love to write. I really enjoy a campaign setting where I can write my character into the world. With goals, plans, and most of all Plot Hooks for the GMs. Whether it's Disadvantages, Contacts, Patrons, or part of an ongoing story. (One character is determined that the Elven Race not pass beyond the Veil and that mankind is not the worlds inheritors.)
"How to get there". Now here's the hard part. As a campaign grows I have discovered my characters forced from their Paths to other Paths through events or even non events in the campaign world. (The character alluded to above I have been playing for 7yrs and while he is powerful, influential, and wealthy he is still working towards his goals.)
To repeat my question; "How do you Role play?"
Cheers
