View Full Version : Speedster Name Needed
tancred

In keeping with the sudden spate of "...Name Needed" threads, I need a name for a speedster.
The character is secretly the son of the 3rd Edition villain The Dash (from The Great Supervillain Contest and his girlfriend Microwave. The boy was taken from his parents when they were in jail 20 years ago and given to adoptive parents. He has no idea he is adopted or that his biological parents are supervillains (still active, and looking for him).
Lance Lamont Barclay (his real name), is an EMT in real life. He just moved to Millenium City 6 weeks ago, and met his new girlfriend (who is a PI) 3 weeks ago.
He has movie-star good looks, and is quite the goody-two-shoes. He's not stuffy and self-righteous, just an old-fashioned country boy who would never consider breaking the rules. (He never double-parks, never cuts in line, is always polite and helpful. In short, a Boy Scout.)
The game is a new one set in the CU (though tied into an existing game) , and will have a very Silver Age feel.
I've considered and rejected Sleight of Hand, Phase Shift (from a sci-fi book where that was the "warp drive"), Frequency, Inertia, and Kinetic (because too close to an existing CU character).
There's already a Quicksilver character in the universe.
Silly names are not entirely out of the question; PDQ is my current working "name."
Any help appreciated.

For a good storyline, he could decide to use the name Dash, knowing that a villain is currently using the name, in an attempt to "redeem" the name. Hey, stranger things have happened. And imagine what happens when villain Dash decides to show up and punish the upstart......

Stat looks pretty good to me too.
In keeping with PDQ, how about ASAP? (At least it's pronounceable.)

Wow!
Didn't think I'd get this many responses this quickly.
Consider them all swiped....er, used in homage.
I actually considered Speedy Gonzales (or his cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, for the irony factor).
I like Stat and ASAP; those will appear somewhere, somewhen.
Hotflash just became my long-lost twin sister; too funny not to use! :)
I still like PDQ, but it doesn't fit him that well.
Slipstream is my currently favorite, at least until somebody hits me with one I like better.
Thanks for all the help!

Since he's a good ole country boy, maybe he grew up on a farm (maybe?) or has a farm in the family and with the "reap what you sow" thinking, he calls himself Whirlwind.
But Hotflash for a girl :snicker: Oh, she'd better be a bombshell, or an angry woman.

Trailblazer
You've got the inference of kinetic energy, travel, and a somewhat country sounding word.
Or maybe not.

I think "Stat" if you want to emphasize his work as a paramedic and make that central to his character, but PDQ is absolutely perfect if you want to emphasize him as a corn-fed country boy, since it's something his adopted parents would've used as a common phrase.
I can just *smell* the crisis of character coming down the pike for this guy when he learns that his adoptive parents lied to him and he finds out he's really the son of a couple of villains. ("How can I be good? Am I just fooling myself? What *is* good, if the people who I thought were righteous were lying to me all these years," etc.)
Fun stuff.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeee!!
(the last being my suggestion for a name, obviously) :)
Anyway he doesn't know his parents are called Microwave and Dash, so he'd probably get that completely wrong and assumed they were called, I dunno, Fridge and Dot, or something.
Then he could call himself ColdPeriod in tribute to his imaginary parents. It also has the advantage that his name isn't going to give away his power set to enemies. :nonp:

And of course, there's the stuck up chick in the group who would say "I am so not There!"
Then you'd have problems if someone said "Don't go There!" Especially if There wasn't around.
Or you ask "Hey, where's StrongArm?"
"Oh, he's over there."
"Aw man, that's just sick. Tell them to get a room."

Heh. Thinking about the name, though, maybe if the character is a philosopher, he could start handing out modern advice through ASAP's fables? :hex:

The only problem with ASAP is that it's pronounced "A Sap". Would *you* want to be called a sap? There aren't a whole lot of names that can't be twisted around in some similar manner. Besides, "ASAP" puts the accent on the first syllable, while "A Sap" puts it on the second.

It stands for Bring Your Own Brick. You make up two characters (they don't have to be bricks) and the GM chooses which one you'll play.

There have been MANY fine suggestions, and you all may consider yourselves swiped, er, homaged. All these names are in a file that will (eventually) be put into a Hero Names table in my Random Name Generator program.
Phil, Hyphen was actually the very first name I considered for him. But he doesn't KNOW that he's the son of Dash, so I couldn't think of an in-character way to justify it. (If you have a suggestion for that, let me know; the pun is just too good to pass up.)
Speedball, the whole bit about his not knowing his real parents is intended for just what you talked about. He has a mystery Hunted, which I assume will be his parents Dash and Microwave (whom I've written up and given to the GM). Microwave is starting to feel her age, and wants her child back.
I anticipate much good fun when they all finally meet.

How about:
Windsprint
Javelin
Accelerator
Formula One (appropriate if he has to dose up like Dash)
Jackrabbit
Tornado
Pony (or Pony Boy if he likes S.E. Hinton)
Scout (or Eagle Scout)
Marathon
Stride
Pacesetter

I think PDQ is fabulous. Alternatively how about Shovel. As in as fast as s*** off one.
Then there's Zip, Whizz, Zoom, and similar onomatopoeiac words.
Cheetah, Impala, Greyhound and similar animal terms.
Runner, Dasher, Sprinter, and other verb-related nouns.
Or you could go down the route of my favourite ever Champions character:
Jack (because, er, that was his name).

Conversely, you should avoid the following:
The Whizzer (Especially if you wear a yellow costume. Marvel, what were you thinking?)
The Quickie
The Yellow Streak
The One Minute Wonder (Because, ya know, people talk)

Well, unless in his secret ID he/she was an adult film star, I'd agree.
The Whizzer (Especially if you wear a yellow costume. Marvel, what were you thinking?)
Well, there are web sites about this... maybe a Dark Champions Character?
The Quickie
Well, okay, but if he were a convenient store owner named Abu...
The Yellow Streak
Asian nude villain?
The One Minute Wonder (Because, ya know, people talk)
But if were a woman...
Skidmark
No, we won't go there. Things about "you stepped in it" and "are you wearing clean underwear" and "What'd you stop for, Skidmark?" "Exactly." "That'll leave a mark." "Nope, that'll leave a skidmark."
No, I don't know why these idea responses came to me, but I guess it's good there aren't Anime/porn/superheroes.

My first and only speedster was called Jet. He wore a mostly black costume (and was nicknamed Jet-Black almost at once).
As a sidebar, Jet was FAST! The first time I played him I was joining an established group and it went something like this:
(Friend of mine) "So Charles! What kind of character are you playing?"
(Me) "A speedster...my first."
(Friend) "Cool...how fast is he?"
(GM) "Phase One: Jet"
