This one has been driving me nuts. I have a character, I have a time-period, an origin, and all that. But I can't come up with a decent superhero ID and costume.

The basic origin is of a 1930's police officer in San Francisco trying to help clean up Tong/Triad activity in Chinatown. His efforts result in his being attacked by a horde of Tong soldiers. In the fight he looses his arm, and is dumped in the Bay.

He is fished out by an eldery Chinese gentlemen, who nurses him back to health, and along the way instructs him in the art of kung fu.

Unable to rejoin the force, and presumed dead, he starts a new life. As a one-armed crime-fighter (and defender of Chinatown and elsewhere).

Here's the character sheet:

The Scorpion

With the one arm and the whip as his sting, it isn't too far a stretch. You might even add a color or some menacing adjective to spice it up. It's a very 30's kind of name --- think the Green Hornet. I would imagine him in black (or other color) leather biker kind-of outfit with a half-face mask. Sort of police-inspired, but with a big scorpion emblem on it somewhere. It comes off American (leather & police outfit) and asian (scorpion).

Does that help at all?

Sure does. I'll let it mull in my mind.

Hmm... Cantonese for scorpion?

Sounds like it'd make a good name just using english. If it's 30s based, you'd just use the english name anyway. I had no luck on the finding the translation, but did find this: :D

BTW -- any comments on the stats and such for the character?

As far as ideas for a costume go, something like a strongman's
outfit comes to mind -- sleeveless tank-top, leotard-type
pants, leather knee-high boots and wristbands. Since the
outfit is (apparently) going to include a utility belt, said belt
should be designed in such a way as to make its equipment
easily accessible to the remaining arm. As far as concealing his
ID goes, you could have him wear either a hood or a domino
mask (whatever would be easiest for a one-armed man to put
on or take off).

As far as a name for this guy goes, the only thing I can think
of to call him would be Shadow Boxer.

Does any of this help at all?

Just a thought, and probably not a good one as I sit in my office wishing I wasn't at work!

Where I grew up a slot machine was called a one-armed bandit or more often a puggy. I was thinking that if you made the character a Scot he might think of himself as a one-armed bandit and use the code-name Puggy as a self-deprecating reminder. As the pug is a dog commonly associated with the Orient there are resonances...

I really like the Scorpion suggestion, especially for a 1930s style setting...has a very pulpish feel to it. Since he was a cop, may I suggest Blue Scorpion?

I was thinking of adding a color element.
