Selective advantage on other powers

The listing under area effect powers for selective says that it can be applied to other area powers, like darkness. How does this work? Do you have to make a to hit roll for everyone within the darkness that you want to affect?

Can I apply selective to a power like invisibility, so I can be invisible to everyone except my team? If so, do I have to roll to hit everyone that I want to affect?
