View Full Version : HD Template Request for those who know how

Ok,

I inquired about getting something put into HDv3 on the "HDv3 -- What do YOU want to see?" thread but Simon said that they were a custom template and that he generally leaves them for others to create.

Unfortunately I don't know how to do XML or whatever else it takes to do this. Not computer illiterate, just don't know their "Language."

Ok...so here is what I am looking for (Note, I'm using HD v2.41 on Win XP).

1. A Mass Combat Template (ie: For the Armies I so love...)

2. A Star & Planet Template. Don't know if this is even possible as it doesn't fit the standard "Character Sheet" look that all the other Templates do (ie: Characteristics, skills, perks, etc...)

If someone has already done this or if someone is willing to do this...well, I can't "REP" you or anything like that, but it would be really appreciated.

Thanks...

Just help those wonderful template authors out there:

1. Mass Combat Units & Mass Combat are covered in FH p. 200-218

2. Stars & Planets of course are covered in SH on p. 66-107 in particular, but the meat of what will be needed is found on p. 70-98.

I have FH, but don't have SH... yet. I'll see if I can create an RTF template for the Mass Combat & Units. I'm at work and don't have my book wo you'll need to wait a couple days.

If you could scan the sheet and post it, I could probably get started sooner. I might be able to do the same for the SH one as well, if someone could post what it is supposed to look like. It may not be fully functional as I don't have the book, but it would be a template to get you started.

I wouldn't worry so much about SH, unless there are some really cool things you can do with templates that have yet to be shown, you won't be able to do anything with them with regards to HD.

Star systems and planets do not equate in any recognizable form to a Character write up, unlike a Mass Combat Unit which does.

Unless some expanded functionality is added to HD to accomodate the requirements for stars and planets, they won't be able to be created effectively within HD.

RPMiller,

The .pdf's can be found at http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/writeups.htm

There are three of them:

1. Fantasy Hero Mass Combat Record Sheet

2. Planet Creation Form & a Planetary Survey Form. Some info is different between the two, but the Planetary Survey Form is the one I would go with.

3. Star & Star Sector Creation Form & a Star Sector Form. Some info is different between the two, but the Star Sector Form is the one I would go with.

Thanks in advance.

I'll take at look at them shortly. If what TB says is true regarding SH, than that will have to be left for someone else to tackle.

Ok, I looked at the sheet.
I now understand what it is that you are looking for. You need a Character Template AND and Export Template correct?

RPMiller,

Ummm...I guess. What I need is a method to input the info & get the info out...so yes, I suppose it would require both a Character Template & an Export Template.

That being said...Thank you for tackling this. Hmmm...guess I should learn how to do this huh? Now...it requires what...XML? HTML? JAVA? A really BIG Hammer? to get a Template?

Well, you start with pie. ;)

No, you start by reading the manual, and then looking at what others have done. It really doesn't take much "programming" skill.

As an update, I have the export template format working. I now need to work on the Character Template that will take a little while, as I don't have my book still, and I'll need to see where all the stat info is coming from.

I wanted to post a teaser for you. Here is the first version of the Export Template.

You can test it with a standard character template. Put Size in Eye Color and Size Mod in Hair Color. DEF goes in PD. The rest are standard locations. This version doesn't have the "nice" formatting. That comes in the next version. I'll post the character template after the export template is finished and working.

Let me know what you think so far. Also disregard the alignments those get adjusted last.

EDIT: Attachment removed. New attachment added in later post.

RPMiller,

Looks Great!!! Can't wait for the Export Template (Though I will of course :p ).

Thanks again RPMiller.

A "Q" -- What program do you use to write the Templates?

I'm assuming you mean the completed Export Template. ;)

You are very welcome.

An "A" -- I use Notepad.

Hopefully, I'll have another update for you this evening.

Actually I can't wait (but will) for both the Character & Export Template.

Hmmm...Looked at the various Templates in Notepad...my wife said she can assist me (when we get some time -- in the midst of packing & moving to Tucson Arizona).

I didn't get time to work on them last night because of my TKD class. Hopefully, I'll be able to get the character template done at the very least. That is the easy one. The Export is close, but I need to wrap my head around the logic needed for the DMG and RDMG outputs.

Ok, try this one out. I think I've got the format much closer, and the tabs have to be cleaned up in the characteristics section, but otherwise I think it is good to go. I'm hoping to finish up the character template tomorrow.

Dan added a couple tags I needed to really make this work. I'll add those in this evening and post an updated template when I get the chance.

Thanks again to Dan!

Thanks RPMiller & Dan.

I'm glad that there are good people on these boards who are willing to help out.

Ok, sorry this took so long, RL and all that.

I've attached both the Character Template and the Export Template to use with it. DEF on the characteristics tab is PD. Attack powers from the powers tab will be split into ranged and hth, and put on the correct line. The Unit Weapon is filled with the Name that is given the power. I don't play with the mass combat rules so you'll need to test it using your constructs. I'm open to making modifications as needed so please let me know.

Enjoy!
