Hello all,
I am contemplating the purchase of Hero Designer (like this Friday) so I apologize if this documented with the software, but is it possible to set up my own language tree?

Yes, it is. But you will need to create a custom template (XML-based) in order to do that.

Has anyone done this (built their own language tree)? Would they mind giving me a few pointers before I start? :D
(This question is not necesarily directed at Simon (since I'm pretty sure this falls into the "not his job" category), but at anyone who has done this and might be able to tell me how they went about it and point out any pitfalls I may encounter). A PM would be fine. Thanks! :bounce:
Bill.

I'll respond anyway ;)
The main thing to be aware of is that the language tree is handled in a fairly "brute force" manner. For each language, each other language that is related to it is listed with its level of relationship (i.e. 1 point similarity, 2 point similarity, etc.). I couldn't see any more elegant approach to it, unfortunately...
The bad news is that this amounts to a fairly large chunk of XML.
The good news is that the XML is extremely repetitive and you're normally looking at just doing a lot of copy/paste and changing one or two things for any given language.

I hate to ressurect an old thread (no I actually don't!)
But does HD 2.42 use the language tree as per the book?
I myself am trying to understand the language tree as it works in the book (and it is a slight complicated to me) but with languages overlapping like French and Spanish, do you receive a benefit with the program? At what level do you receive the benefit?
I currently am working on a character with 8 languages all considered to be fluent conversastion (English, German, Spanish, French, Latin, Portugese, Japanese, and Russian), and I want to make sure I am receiving the point benefits.

The language familiarity chart is an optional rule under 5ER. You enable it on the Rules tab of the Campaign Rules screen.
