Hey,
I just upgraded my computer, and got a faster processor and twice as much RAM. All of my old files were imaged over to the new hard-drive, including Hero Designer, which worked fine on my old box.
Now, however, Hero Designer locks up my entire machine whenever I double-click on anything in the program. The only way out is to Ctrl-Alt-Del. I've tried everything -- re-installing HD and the new version, and restarting, for instance. No luck. Nothing works.
Can anybody help me with this? What makes the whole matter worse is that part of the reason for the upgrade was to make HD run faster... :)

However, as the caffeine slowly hits my brain this morning, I'm recalling a previous case where someone reported simiilar behavior....in his case, it turned out to be the mouse driver on his system. I'll try to explain what lead us to that:
1. HD worked fine for everything until he double clicked. If he single clicked and then clicked the "select" button, it would work fine....it was just a double click that was killing things. This struck me as odd, as double clicking doesn't do anything differently (code-wise) from clicking the select button. Actually, it just programmatically "clicks" the select button, so it's identical in functionality.
2. He had recently upgraded his system, reinstalling everything. Including the drivers for his hardware.
3. The mouse events are really a system-level thing which Windows (or Linux, or whatever) passes on to Java. Basically, the OS tells Java that the user clicked the mouse X times at point Y. That type of thing. It's not something which Java has much control over....a Java app can listen for mouse events and then perform certain functions as a result....which is what HD does. If there were something in the code which was causing HD (or the system) to crash, then <b>far</b> more people should have had the issue.
4. It's very, very hard for Java to crash a system. Effectively, Java runs in its own little sandbox (the JVM). It is possible for a Java app to affect the system badly enough that it crashes it, but it's not something that you generally see.
Anyway, we scratched our heads on this for a while and then finally hit on the mouse driver bit. He went out and updated the driver for his mouse and everything cleared up.
It seems that there was a bug in his mouse driver which was causing serious issues when his system tried to communicate certain mouse events to Java.
So...I'd recommend hitting the website for the vendors of your mouse and grabbing an updated driver.

Hi, thanks for the prompt replies.
I putzed around last night trying to figure out what was going on, and it turns out that a) it locks up whenever I dbl-click, 2) it locks up whenever I select something and hit the relevant key, and 3) it locks up sometimes when I'm just navigating through the menu bar.
Here's the log file you requested -- this is from the last time it locked up, under a circumstance 3), above, when I was just navigating the menu bar.

Definitely look into updating your mouse driver (as detailed above). All of the events that you specify are mouse and windowing events....

I've fixed it! It appears that when I uninstalled, a file or two was left behind in the HD directory, even after I upgraded the mouse drivers, and those were what was causing the recurring problem -- by uninstalling and then deleting the whole of the remaining contents of the folder, and then reinstalling, everything was better.
And now it runs fast, to boot. Life is good.
