HERO System pulp gaming websites:
Hero Pulp (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Realm/6532/), probably the most broadly useful of all such websites. Many period vehicle and weapon stats with background and illos, character Package Deals, and writeups for famous fictional characters.
Amazing Adventures! (http://home.earthlink.net/~ddoepke/index.html) Adaptation of the setting and some of the game mechanics from White Wolf's Adventure! game, with firearms and NPCs fully statted.
Thrilling True Tales!!! (http://www.armlesstigerman.com/intro/pulp/index.html), with campaign background and logs, NPCs and optional "fate point" rules.
The Odyssey League (http://www.brighthouse.ca/lee/odyssey/). Good campaign background and well-designed NPCs.
Daredevils (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Underworld/1701/daredevils_index.htm). More interesting NPCs.
General pulp gaming websites:
The Pulp Avengers (http://www.fantasylibrary.com/lounge/pulpavengers.htm). Excellent essay for GMs on running pulp campaigns.
The Empire Club (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Labyrinth/2687/). No game stats, but many colorful characters heroic, villainous and neutral, plus extensive campaign logs covering several pulp subgenres.
General pulp background websites:
Dirty 30s (http://www.paper-dragon.com/1939/). Excellent compilation of historical info on the era: timeline, culture, weapons and vehicles, fashion, price guide, slang, etc.
Pulp Project 1557 (http://www.seedwiki.com/page.cfm?wikiid=2331&doc=Pulp%20Project1557). All sorts of materials for pulp gaming, including biographies, city maps, campaign outlines and plot seeds, and links to other sites.
The Pulp.Net (http://thepulp.net/). Detailed background on the history of pulp magazines and notable characters therefrom, with tons of additional links.

I picked up a program from Best Buy a few weeks ago called National Geographic Maps: The Complete Collection. It was only about $30, and it (supposedly) contains every fold-out map ever printed from the last 80 years of National Geographic. I haven't gone through every map, but it's an 8-disk collection and it has an absolute s**tload of maps in it. It probably has maps of Europe, Africa, and South America from the 30s and 40s (I don't have it loaded up on this computer so I can't say for sure what's on it). I'm positive it will come in handy for globe-trotting adventures, and I seriously recommend it for all mapophiles. :)

Bill -- re: NG maps, your best bets for Pulp stuff probably are:
December 1922 -- the World
December 1932 -- the World
December 1933 (IIRC) -- Asia
June 1935 -- Africa
December 1935 -- the World
April 1938 -- Europe
Why yes, I have been buying a lot of maps lately, why do you ask? ;)

I came across this site the other day; it sells collections of pulp reprints. I haven't ordered any, and I'm not entirely sure about the professionalism of the operation, but I figured some people might enjoy knowing about it:
http://www.geocities.com/fadingshadows1/btm.htm
Some of those mini sites look pretty cool! Too bad none of my gaming groups uses minis, or I'd order some.

Although I run a game set in 1933, this slang site should serve for any game set during the pulp era, except the very early ones (pre-WWI), or the vary late ones (1943-):
Jazz Age Slang
A guide to the vernacular of the 20's and 30's.
http://home.earthlink.net/~dlarkins/slang-pg.htm
My home campaign is set in an alternate 30's where some pulp-tech has changed the course of science and technology. Not everyone has a taste for Crimson Skies-GURPS Gernsback style action, but everybody can use a few cool super-science toys to throw at player's now and again. These two sites proved a great resource for me:
Tales of Future Past

I'm not sure this fits, but Ripley's Believe It or Not cartoons started publishing in 1918. It started out with sports, but soon moved to unusual facts.
I haven't been able to find any sort of archive online, but it might be a good source for story hooks. They sell reprintings of the book collections, going back to the first in 1929.

Does anyone have one of these (or know of an online archive), and do they make good resources?

Has anyone mentijoned Harry Houdini yet?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houdini
I'm watching a special on Harry Houdini now on the History Channel. Besides being a stage magician, Harry Houdini had many "real" escapes to his credit. He wouid often have police officers lock him in jail cells, which he would then escape from. Once he as locked in the cell wearing only a loin cloth to prove he wasn't carrying any lock picks or keys, and locked in jail for the night. He escaped, switched all of the prisoners around to different cells, and then escaped himself from the jail to a waiting car.
For any pulp character that wants to base themselves on an escape artist, Harry Houdini would be a great model. I'll see if I can find something a bit more in depth than the Wikipedia site, it's a bit brief.

I can't help but love Zeppelins... I don't know why. Maybe because they remind me of submarines of the sky. Well, as I was browsing RPGNow.com, I came across this Thrilling Adventures module, which has three adventures, one with zeppelins. They say it comes with detailed plans of four zeppelins. I'm still kinda hesitant to buy it, since it's mostly for d20 Modern. Mayb ein the next day or so...
From RPGNow:
THRILLING TALES: Zeppelin Adventures (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=6120&SRC=FrontPage)
Nothing epitomizes the pulp era like the zeppelin.
In a world of economic depression, totalitarianism, war, and a creeping sense of wider conflict to come, the hulls of the rigid airships seemed to reflect everything good and noble in mankind. They were human potential realized. Simply put, they were just damned cool.
Zeppelin Adventures brings the majesty and glamour of airships to your d20 pulp campaign. This 60-page PDF, written by Jackson Kuhl, features three pulse-pounding adventures:
* Operation Zephyr, a straight-forward action adventure mixed with light intrigue;
* Ghouls of the Gasbags, a brief horror/suspense adventure meant to be played in a single gaming session; and
* Where Zeppelins Dare, an espionage adventure in the spirit of spy-novelist Alistair MacLean.
In addition, we present game information on airships, including full D20 System stats on five different zeppelins, cut-away diagrams, full deckplans and more!
Everything you need to add airships to your pulp D20 game can be found in this book. Take to the skies!

Jack London: writer, photographer.
http://sfgate.com/c/pictures/2006/01/06/ba_a1.jpg
In the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, Jack London worked for Collier's magazine. He covered the devastation caused by the quake, taking pictures, and interviewing people, as well as giving his own first hand account. (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/London/Writings/Journalism/sfearthquake.html) He's a bit pre-pulp, but fun never the less.
I can't really think of a better pulp archetype than a traveling writer and photographer.
More on his photography at the San Francisco Chronical. (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/01/06/BAGN3GI4NU1.DTL) There's always Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_London) too.

Well, I'm sure we'll plan some for 2007. If the ones we release in 2006 don't sell well enough, we'll take 'em off and substitute something else, like we did with the SH line. As much as I love Pulp stuff, it's got to pull its weight in the accounts receivable department like everything else. ;)

I stumbled across another Pulp Era Resource for the list:
http://www.archive.org/details/neworleanscity00writmiss
It's a PDF file of the New Orleans city guide, written and compiled by the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration in 1938. It covers everythign from local entertainment spots to hotels (including prices and what amenities they offer) to cemeteries, to anything you can think of. It is, essentially, a Pulp Campaign Setting in a box.
It was also written in 1938, so be prepared for opinions, assumptions, and comments fostered by the mindset of the day - some people may be offended by them.
Lastly, it's a BIG file - 64 MB - and the site isn't a fast download. I suggest starting the download and walking away to watch a few episodes of Flash Gordon or Radar Men From The Moon.

http://www.pigames.net/store/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=180I'm very tempted to pick some of these up. Have you purchased from them before? I'm not sure I understand how it works. Apparently one can customize, up to a point (e.g., adding numbers to figs). Once you download the figs, can you number them, print, then renumber and print again?
Also, what weight cardstock do you use? (I want to use them as "tent" style stand-ups).
Thanks.

Have you purchased from them before?
I've bought them. I don't like them as much as SJohn Ross's SPARKS, but they're still plenty useful. Basically when you buy 'em you get (or create) a code you can enter on the PIG website. Whenever you want some paper minis, you go there, enter the code, and use the tools on their website to print whatever you want. For example, if you want an entire sheet of "Nazi Soldiers," you can print just that. It's pretty flexible and a good use of Web technology to improve product utility, I think.

SPARKS have some great features, but I must say I'm partial to full color. The problem I'm having with my PIG figures is that they seem to be printing at 94% normal size. In any event, they're smaller than SJG's figures, which is the size I'd like to match. Can anyone advise?

I can think of a few methods-
In printer options or advanced printer properties, can printer scale up the output?
You could also try printing to a PDF file, and then using adobe reader to increase the scale.
Finally, you could save the webpage to your hard drive, and put the images in a Word (or other wordprocessor) document and rescale them there. Or in a graphic program.

Luftschiff (board game) (http://www.sierramadregames.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3)
Luftschiff is the original version of our Zeppelin combat game, limited to German airships in the Great War. This product has been completely replaced by Airships at War, and is thus only of interest to game historians or collectors.
$16 from Sierra Madre Games (http://www.sierramadregames.com/index.php?main_page=index)
also...
Airships At War, 12th anniversary ed. (board game) (http://www.sierramadregames.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3)
Airships at War is a solitaire simulation of dirigible combat. Historical scenarios take place during the Great War, while hypothetical ones extend into the inter-war years. The player acts as the crew of a single Zeppelin on a mission over England, the North Sea, Russia, Italy, Africa or the Pacific.
$24 at Sierra Madre Games. It has expansions as well.

A couple supplements from DrivethruRPG.com:
I doubt this supplement will have as much info in it as the Pulp Hero book, but sometimes you need all you can get.
Timeline: Roaring 20s
Welcome to Timeline: Roaring 20s (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=3667), a sourcebook for Modern d20 games. This is a new type of sourcebook for us, depicting a time period rather than a particular genre. Many of our previous books in the Blood and… line are really genre books, providing the crunch needed for role-playing in the horror, military, martial arts or super hero genres. This book is much more cream than crunch, and is meant to work alongside our genre books. For example, a campaign featuring shadowy vigilantes fighting inscrutable Eastern villains could use Timeline: Roaring 20s, Blood and Fists, and (if the “flash” level is set high enough) Blood and Vigilance. Of course, it is equally possible to use this book with just the core rules to play in a wide range of genres.
This Roaring Supplement includes:
3 New Occupations
5 New Advanced Classes (G-Man, Hitman, Intrepid Reporter, Mob Boss, and Mystery Man).
New 20s Weapons and Vehicles.
A 1920s timeline for gamemasters.
THRILLING TALES: The Steel Legion
An adventure for THRILLING TALES (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=3691) or any d20 Pulp Campaign
Have fun!

I've been looking for a Sears catalogue online contemporary with the period, for reference on the myriad of little things one might want prices for, and came across the Sears mail order home listings.
Yep, you could mail order a home through Sears, with easy payments.
Here's an image of the Easy Payment Plan. (http://images.oldhouseweb.com/stories/bitmaps/10424/mortgage.jpg). Here's the page with an extensive article on Sears Kit Houses (http://www.oldhouseweb.com/stories/Features/Sears_Kit_Houses/).
Sears itself references their product in their archives here (http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/index.htm), sorted by year, with images of the advertisements including rough floor plans.

I found a list of web links in today’s Minneapolis Star Tribune that had retro as the common theme. Several of them seem like they might be useful to a Pulp Hero GM.
For creating realistic looking telegrams:
http://www.retro-gram.com
If you want to spend money you can have a telegram mailed to you (or somebody else), or you can follow the ‘via e-mail’ link and have the telegram e-mailed to you (or somebody else) in a PDF file. They have styles ranging from late 19th/early 20th century, to 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s style telegrams.
For 1930s and 1940s radio shows:
http://antiqueradios/shows/ (http://antiqueradios.com/shows/)
The shows are available in a mix of streaming audio and downloadable files. You can also purchase shows on CD.
For recordings made between the 1890s – 1928 on wax cylinders:
http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu
They have a searchable archive. The recordings are available for download, and as streaming audio.
For newsreels:
http://www.archive.org/movies/
They have a searchable archive. Just searching for the key word newsreels gave me some 280 different files available for download. They have a lot more available then just newsreels.
Enjoy.

Not an "online" resource but I recently received my copy of "The Pulp Hero-Special Edition" By Nick Carr, published by "Wildcat Books" with short writeups on various characters ,both the famous ("Doc Savage", "G-8", "The Shadow", "Tarzan" etc) and the more obscure ("Captain Zero","Phineas Pinkham" and "Matalaa : The White Savage" for example). The web address of the publisher is given as www.lulu.com. (Er if someone who knows more about it than I could check that address out and post a link I would appreciate it !) Includes a section on "The Care and Feeding of Pulps" for serious collectors of the old magazines but so far I have only skimmed the contents.

They publish the work of David Hatcher Childress for a start but I have more recently got a copy of "In Secret Mongolia" by Henning Haslund, a reprint of a Danish explorer in Mongolia in the 1920's and '30's, which looks to be just FULL of ideas for a pulp adventure !

More on "Wild Cat Books" (referred to in my last post). Looks like a modern publisher who wants to revive the "pulp" genre. I have a novel er book of novellas/short stories (which I am reading at the moment)entitled "The Hounds Of Hell" by Ron Fortier and Gordon Linzner which features a confrontation between two pulp characters ;the evil "Doctor Satan" and the "Robin Hood" type "hero" "The Moon Man". They also publish reprints of the works of such writers as Sax Rohmer, H Rider Haggard and "Russell Thorndike ("Dr Syn : A smugglers Tale Of Romney Marsh") as well as new fiction featuring characters with names like "Brother Grim" and "Captain Spectre and the Lightning Legion" !

Plot synopsis for One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_of_Our_Dinosaurs_Is_Missing)
While this was actually a comedy, it was set in the 20s and has a lot of elements that can be used in a pulp game: a secret formula, chase scenes, and kung fu fighting. Keep in mind that the Chinese agents were a bit stereotypical (this was made in the 70s), but it was a fun movie to watch. Here are a couple of spoilers.
The climax:
Lotus X turned out to be a chicken soup recipe!
My favorite recollection about the movie:
While the Chinese agents defeated the museum guards with their mastery of kung fu, they were no match for elderly nannies armed with handbags.

Dover Books' Architecture section (http://store.doverpublications.com/by-subject-architecture--interior-design--period-style.html) has lots of books with house plans from the Victorian Era (built pre-pulp, but probably still quite common during the Pulp Era) as well as a number with house plans from the 20's and at least one from the 30's. There are also at least a few books with things other than houses. I just ordered The Architecture of McKim, Mead & White in Photographs, Plans and Elevations, which includes plans for well-known museums and such and The Metropolis of Tomorrow published in 1929 and written by Ferris (the guy who invented the Ferris Wheel).
Also, Osprey Publishing (http://www.ospreypublishing.com/) has some nice books for this and other periods. The "Naval" section has books on WW I and WWW II submarines and the "Aviation" section has at least one Book on Zepplins.

For early pulp agents this watch might come in handy (nice photos on the site, too):
http://watchismo.blogspot.com/2007/05/watchismo-times_10.html
More camera watches can be found on this page http://watchismo.blogspot.com/search/label/vintage
And a little after the standard pulp era they would be able to get one of these:
http://watchismo.blogspot.com/2006/11/spy-watch-who-loved-me-1955-protona.html
Quite a nice site to trawl through, actually, because the descriptions and pictures are very easy to piece together if you want to create an authentic-looking pulp era timepiece with unusual functions. Slapping an old brand name on it adds that Bondesque chic :)
Finally, I couldn't see a link to these Zeppelin floor plans anywhere, so here you go: http://www.rattrap-productions.com/PulpHeroes/Downloads/ScenicPDFs/zeppelingondola.zip

A couple of nights ago, I was thinking that with a bit of work, some of the old Dungeons & Dragons modules would work great as pulp adventures. I was thinking specifically of these two:
X1: The Isle of Dread, by David "Zeb" Cook and Tom Moldvay. The PCs take a trip to an uncharted island and encounter pirates and dinosaurs.
DA3: City of the Gods, by Dave L. Arneson and David J. Ritchie. The PCs meet the survivors of a crashed starship (the crew is human, with robotic servants) and get their first taste of future technology.

Another one. No footage, but an original recording. Strange to hear this song in another language.
