View Full Version : Marvel Second Stringers. Help me out.

Okay, I am, mostly for intellectual exercise, creating a team of obscure Marvel Heroes. For once I am not mining the treasure trove of Joke characters, but merely characters that have had little impact or less impact in the Universe than they could. Right now I have two.

Thundra
Giant Man II (Bill Foster)

I'd like someone who is a) Legitimate (No Frogman or Captain Ultra this time), b) seems like they'd be able to work in a group, and c) be willing to relocate out of New York.

Is Nova still around? I remember liking him.

Starfox / Eros was cool as well, even if they never did use him as well as they could.

I'm not sure if Doc Samson counts as a second stringer, but I always liked him.

Throw in all the Power Pack kids, and Franklin, as adults.

Been a long time since I read Marvel.

Must they be New York residents in the first place?

And would you count The Warriors Three as "joke" characters?

Here are few second stringers. Some are fairly low powered. Most of these made appearances in Captain America's comicbook back when I was reading them about a decade ago.

Diamondback (she was Cap's girl friend, at least for a while)
Demolition Man (Dennis Dumphy, low level brick, former unlimited league professional wrestler, he hung around with Cap for a while, I ran this character in a low-level marvel game once).
Falcon (he was Cap's partner for a spell, I don't remember what happened to him)
Silver Sable (she also appeared in Spiderman from time to time, basically a merc so I don't know if I'd really classify her as a hero)
Moon Knight (a friend of mine used to run him in our low-level marvel game but I didn't ever read much of the Moon Kight stuff).

Second Stringers, eh?
Okay ... how about: A new Dr. Druid, Triathalon/3D Man, Photon I/Captain Marvel II (Monica Rambieau), Living Lightning, Espirita, Gilgamesh, Warcry, Rage, Spider Woman II or III and Stingray :)

Nucleon

Well, I like the Russian heroes; Vanguard, Red Dynamo, Mj Ursus, the Titanium Man... not all the bunch of them, mind you...

...Hercules...

Does anybody remember Atomia? She was in Namor's entourage during the events of Super Vilain Team-Up, Hydrobase and stuff...

The Heroes Reborn debacle left us at least one good character we saw a bit in older Thunderbolts; Rikki Barnes, the Franklinworld's Bucky.

Gorgon, Medusa, Black Bolt, Jawlock. That was sooo Kirby.

Nova. It would be good to see Nova back somewhere.

And there is more...

ShinDangaioh
May 9th, '05, 03:42 PM
Moon Knight

Ghost Rider(The one that perceded Johnny Blaze) I think he's called Shadow Rider now. He's dressed as a cowboy in an off-white outfit(glowing?) with full face mask. He just goes whereever her needs to be.

Spellbinder. Not the lead girl from that mini-series, she went nuts. Her eldest brother. He has the chaos and order bracelets and is guarding against one of the Spellbinders returning to wreak havoc on Earth

How obscure is obscure? Several characters mentioned are Avengers.

Where are they relocating to?

West Coast, Seattle to stay away from the LA stigma.
I don't care if they've been popular before, but they should be far from the limelight now.
Phonon (formerly Captain Marvel II) works. As does Doc Samson because, I like him and he's always been a guest rather than a star. Demoliton Man too. However, I am getting brick centric here and was hoping for some others...:D

American Eagle from an old Marvel 2 in 1 Annual - Brick, heightened senses, crossbow, rwb costume with eagle feather headdress.

Anybody mention Machine Man? the Shroud?

A costal city, I would have suggested Namorita if not for the brick centric reference.

Moondragon. Every group needs a mentalist, as a non-mutant telepath I find her fascinating, and she also brings martial arts to the table.

If you are leaving out Demolition Man, I would suggest Nomad or USAgent. Yes, neither is know for their teamwork, but for dramatic purposes a Hawkeye/Wolverine "loyal opposition" can provide a foil for the leader.

What's Black Cat doing since Peter got married? Martial arts and luck powers.

Powered armor might be nice. There's War Machine. Or Sketchpad mentioned Stingray. Humm, Stingray and Namorita might be an interesting team-within-a-team.

Starfox and Sersi both have potential that has never been utilized.

Jhamin

-A favorite of mine (whom I stole for my campaign) would be Sunturian, an obscure Iron Man character. He was to Roxxon Oil what Iron Man was to Stark International. Funny thing was, he was actually a really good guy.

-For that godly might angle you can include Thunderstrike from Thor, (or let him stay dead & pass the mace to a new mortal who is worthy)

-Is Darkhawk obscure enough to be a member of the team?

-For the skilled normal with a schtick try Rocket Racer from Spiderman, the ernest youth with a wrist blaster & a rocket powered skateboard.

My nomination for team mystic: Jennifer Kale, the student of Dakimh The Enchanter (deceased, wizard, guardian of the multiverse, former student of Zhered-Na, and survivor from pre-cataclymic Atlantis).

Despite appearing in Howard the Duck, and wearing a costume consisting of wispy not-much, Jennifer Kale was a talented, pleasant, serious and useful person, and Dakimh was no joke till (being very elderly) he keeled over and died of a heart attack due to the physical strain of mystic combat.

I'd rather adventure with a likeable team-member like Jennifer Kale than with, say. Talisman (Elizabeth Twoyoungmen) or Doctor Druid (Anthony Druid).

So what is this team going to be called? Also what is it's base like?

As an aside, if you want to toy with the fabric of reality (And Peter Parker's sanity) You could include some Clones of his who have adopted the alternate identities he assumed during the period in which he had a bounty on his head. You know, The Hornet, The Rollicking Ricochet, Dusk and Prodigy. Varied, and you get to toy with Spidey's sanity. What's not to like?

If you're looking for a good 'energy blaster' give Alison blaire, aka Dazzler a shot.

She is a capable character in the right hands, and she REALLY needs to get away from the X-Men (and especially away from the dorky Mojoverse stuff).

Kind of associated with Dazzler is another candidate:

The Blue Shield. Basically a guy with a force field, but he was also the chief of security of the Pegasus Project... hmm, or maybe some other Project... I forget. But that proves he is a forgettable character with potential for your team. He should probably expand his powers, possibly by expanding his force field into a limited telekinesis??

But definitely Dazzler.

If you're going to have Thundra, you could toss Arkon in there too, and base the team in Telemachus as an inter-dimensional hero group.

I would choose

Stingray (Puget Sound after all plus all that exciting marine life along the coast would attract his secret ID) Power Armor + Scientist

Doc Samson Brick and if we learned anything from Thunderbolts its that a shrink on a superhero team is needed.

Alex Power (with all the powerpack powers) young Alex is just goin off to school when the jones to super hits him again. Gravity Control, Mass Control, Flight, Disintegration and Energy Absorbtion

Dazzler the comeback kid, despite what others said her days in the Xmen were good to her until the Mojoverse.

He just needs Waid to write him a new book.

Torpedo made a guest appearance in New Warriors, or some kid in the Galadornian armor did. Yep add Torpedo II in for some speedster action.

Y'know, last I saw of Dazzler myself was a few years ago in the final couple issues of Deadpool, pre-Agent X storyline. She was back in the skintight silver and belting out the disco again. Hired Deadpool 'cause some nutter with a gun and a mad-on for disco music was making death threats. Despite her reassociation with disco in that story, I was glad to see her free of the Mojoverse dreck.

Of course, the problem is that any second stringer can become a first run character with minimal notice.

Spider Woman is mentioned above, and she would be a great flying Energy Projector for the second string team a few months ago. Now that she's in the New Avengers lineup, I don't know that she's a second stringer any more.

Quasar, also noted above, was an avenger with his own title a few years back, but use over the past few years would make him a second stringer at present, at least in my opinion.

And you just know as soon as your second stringer roster is set, one of them will get a first run book, which will change everything you've done with the character :weep:

Where's a write-up of Dazzler I can look at?

Edit: Silly humans slow, Hulk will smash!

Found one on my own. It was want I expected.

MP:
1. Mega Flash (only 10d6, but that counts for my game).
2. EB with AP (laser, should have been a RKA IMO).
3. Simple Images.

Not a lot to work with there.

The flash works or it doesn't, the images is fun but shouldn't be a major combat occurance. And you don't want to go around using a AP Kill all the time unless it's a rather bloody campaign. The EB blast version is ok, but that doesn't seem to fit the character concept IMO.

At best, a one-trick support character. Likely why she dropped out of the limelight in the comics. I understand however that she's returning to a X-Men title soon.

How about Crystar, the Crystal warrior?

He wandered into Dr. Strange's house once and almost wound up causing it to be burned to the ground.

The guy wouldn't be worth much in a fight, but he's *definitely* second stringer material. Or maybe towel boy...

Okay ... how about: A new Dr. Druid, Triathalon/3D Man, Photon I/Captain Marvel II (Monica Rambieau), Living Lightning, Espirita, Gilgamesh, Warcry, Rage, Spider Woman II or III and Stingray :)

There was nothing second string about Photon. Huge power level. Former chairwoman of the Avengers. She may not have been the most popular character, but in terms of ability, she's a first stringer all the way.

I think Stingray, Darkhawk, and Moon Knight are all good suggestions. But you might look at some of the Nightstalkers too. Especially now that Dr. Strange has the Darkhold.

Gilgamesh is dead.

I though that Silver Claw had potential if they could ever figure out how to use her properly.

So what do you plan to do with these second-stringers, oh Master?
nothing really, I occasionally futz with the idea of a marvel game but the comics themselves tend to frustrate me so that I feel changing some big parts of the campaign world would alleviate that as well as reduce players' expectations and "familiarity" factor so that one could still surprise them.

This would be one of those teams. A well funded, run, and organized team built around their own strengths and operating away from the usual hotbed of Marvel Activity.

I agree, but for my purposes she'd be fine.

true, and Stingray would work for the seaside aspects as well as being a good "tech guy"

Gilgamesh is dead.

I've discovered this thread only now but I'd like to throw in some suggestion just to amuse myself ( and I hope the others...).

Stingray: Marvelous ( I know that has already been suggested) and moreover is a tech genius and can be helpful..but if you prefer you can cover the aquatic realm with Namorita...so nineties !!

Machine-Man: I don't know if it's still around but it is a great character with lot of gadgets. Plus you got the human heart inside the machine thing to roleplay...

Puck The jumping dwarf of the Alpha Flight ( is it still alive ??) is a powerful character from a player point of view but it has also that magical touch that is entertaining

Daimon Hellstorm I think that it was involved in some of the craziest stories with the Defenders but a subsequent miniserie put him back in the map. Is a powerful dark character that should be good for all the magic and mystical issues of the team.

Jack of Heart I know that they kill him but a new character with the same power would be very interesting ( the isolation room, the tormented soul, the involontary hero...great RPG)

Night Trasher Perfect for a grim character without falling into the frenzied killer. Lot of gadgets, bad attitude and an overall good look. Maybe you can cut the lame skateboard.

Here are the first names that i found suitable but I'm sure that a good night sleep and some browsing through my collection can find something else.

If you need it...
Ciao

Doc Samson, The Shroud, Stingray, Paladin, Gargoyle, Quasar, Blue Shield, Falcon (is he a second-stringer?), Moon Knight (except he’s such the ‘ultimate’ second-stringer he may be too popular), American Eagle, Photon (Captain Marvel II), Andromeda (of the old “New Defenders”), Thunderstrike, Black Knight (Dane Whitman…he still around?), Battlestar, White Tiger (the woman who just discovered her powers in recent Daredevil issues), Cloak & Dagger, El Aguila, Crimson Commando (anyone remember him?), Firebird, Valkyrie…

It would be interesting to see what might happen if the second-stringers stepped out of the shadows.

What if, one day, large groups of people were snatched to another world? Not one crawling with viscious aliens, or set up as a massive war game, but simply another world, uninhabited by sentient life. Now what do you think would happen if all the second-stringers of two universes, D.C and Marvel were transported here as well. Interesting thought eh? What do you gents think would happen?

Dauntless
May 13th, '05, 10:39 AM
How about:

Machine Man
Iron Fist
Shang Chi
Stick or Stone
Longshot
Forge

As far as I know, Stick and Stone have never had their own series although they were criticial in the training and storyline of Daredevil. Iron Fist had a series awhile back, and a mini-series more recently, but he's still never been a major player. Shang Chi as well hasn't had his own series since the 70's, though he too had a mini-series a few years back. I don't know what became of Longshot after his travails in the Mojo universe. I always thought Forge was one of the coolest mutants around; smart as Tony Stark, mystic abilities like the Shaman, and the ability to neutralize powers. So even though he was a regular for awhile on X-Factor, I don't think he's had much play recently (or has he?). Finally, Machine Man, practically a poster boy for the "guest starring" super hero. He's had a few mini-series, but I don't think he's had his own series since Kirby first introduced him in the 70's. You know, while I'm thinking of 70's, early 80's super heroes that have somewhat faded into obscurity, why not ROM, Kazar or Moon Knight?

We created a team, based in the Marvel Universe, we called the Avengers Extreme. Some, but not all, are second-stringers so I though those reading may find this relevant. We based it on the original Avengers team (Wasp, Giant-Man, Iron-man, Hulk, and Thor). If you want to for fun, guess who we played as the analogue to the original member. The stories I ran were also loosely based on those original Avengers stories (when I could find comic summaries).

The roster was:

War Machine/ James Rhodes
Black Goliath (best player quote: "Man, I'm 20ft. tall, people can see I'm black, just call me Goliath.")
Power Man/ Cage
Photon/ Captain Marvel
Storm
see below for last member

We later added a player who, in our story line, would have joined around the time Captain America joined the Avengers, which was too perfect. He played Black Panther and acted as the team's leader and benefactor.

Here is a link to a cool inspirational picture on one of my favorite superhero sites. http://www.blacksuperhero.com/gallery3/gal3-Ptemple3.html

I need a good martial artist.
Not Shang Chi as he's not a "Tights" kind of guy, Iron Fist is too New York. Nomad is dead. Mantis is well, too odd.
Any little used masters of the martial arts out there? Team is based in Seattle, as I've said before, where Bruce Lee is buried. Any other Kung Fu wannabe's in the MU?

What about the Sons of the Tiger? Any of them still active?

werewolf by night......you know, JJJ's astronaut son that became a werewolf (duuh?) by getting some weird gem grafted to his neck.

he's since learned to control his transformations and doesn't go berserk anymore. otherwise a pretty classic werewolf without a contagious bite (i think).

add in moon knight, because they go way back. way back before he became the fist of khonshu. which makes him a more realistic batman type (detective, martial artist) that becomes a brick as well during the full moon.

Okay, I 've been running the characters around in my head.

What about the Sons of the Tiger? Any of them still active?

There is a new "White Tiger" using the Tiger's Paw Amulet. A female Police Detective IIRC.

My picks:

Leader: Heather Hudson (Guardian)
Metalist: Empath (from the Hellions)
Brick: Nova (always a favorite)
Martial Artist: Nomad (also a great back-up leader)
Energy Projector: Photon/Captain Marvel

I think this could be interesting.

Peace

Hector Ayala (previous White Tiger) died on the courthouse steps during his trial.

The current White Tiger is his niece. She was a detective with the FBI, if I recall correctly.

They kinda left that storyline hangin', didn't they? Daredevil offered to teach her how to use her powers but I don't recall anything after that before the new storyline. Did I miss something?

Spoilery

You may have missed an issue or two. They had once scene where daredevil trains her some and has her foil a hold up at a convince store. Later she saves Daredevil’s life by beating up the Gladiator. At this point I believe she is in costume.

Must've missed an issue, then, cuz that's as unfamiliar as it gets. Thanks for the heads up.

Other than Bucky and Ben Parker, does anyone in the Marvel Universe stay dead?

Bucky is alive! Not a what-if or anything crazy (so far) see the Winter Soldier storyline currently in Cap's book.

Nomad was training his own sidekick for awhile: Vagabond. She was a little acrobatic and alot cute. She'd probably have to train up a bit to be second string, though.
