OK...wanted to give those folks that are interested an update on the status of the chat:
The new server is in place and is performing quite well. From what I've seen so far, it should be able to handle anything we can throw at it (and then some). It should be faster and (most importantly) very stable.
I've also spent some time upgrading the chat applet itself....removing the HTML formatting to improve performance (you don't need to clear old messages now)....and adding in a "keep alive" function which will keep the applet's connection to the server open even during long periods of inactivity. Essentially, you should be able to open up the applet and walk away....if you come back a day later, so long as your connection to the 'Net is still alive, the applet should still be connected and chatting away.
Let me know if anyone has any problems. WIth luck, we've seen the last of the chat crashes ;-)
