View Full Version : This Month's LoH Game

I'm going to be starting up a monthly LoH game at my FLGS. Every month will be something different -- Fantasy Hero, Champions, Star Hero, Pulp Hero, etc. Hopefully this'll give local gamers and idea of the versatility of the system. I'm hoping to attracted a couple of "regulars" (guys who show up every month) and a bunch of "walk-ins" (folks who walk by and say, "Hey, what's that?"). My wife is helping with the logistics, and I've got a couple of friends helping build some pre-gens.

This month's game is Fantasy. I wanted to do something different from a standard D&D style game, so I'm using a world I created many years ago in which there is no "Fighter-Cleric-Mage-Thief" concept and magic is very different from what D&D players are used to. I don't want new players saying, "That's a neat game, but too bad I already play D&D."

Next month, I'm thinking about doing either a Western or an Iron Age Supers.

Anyway, I put together some flyers and thought I'd show them off. I'll let you know how it went afterwards. :)

Bill.

Excellent! I don't know if the date will work for me, but if I can drop by I will.

Just cuz I'm too lazy to hunt for a Ft. Collins phone book, where is Marshak's

Agreed - show them something they can't do with D&D.

Good luck bunny.

Your plot will fail as all your plots do!

It's on the intersection of Linden and Riverside in Old Town, Fort Collins.

Going north from Denver, take Exit 269B (that's the 3rd Fort Collins exit). Head west roughly 3-4 miles until you come to Riverside (which is, appropriately enough, past the river). Head north on Riverside (about a mile or so) until you come to Linden (the name of the road changes just before this, from Riverside to Jefferson). Park somewhere. It's free, but sometimes hard to find a spot. Marshak's is right next door to the Colorado Drum store, right on the corner. There's a big sign with a unicorn on it.

Marshak's is a great store. Hope to see you there!

If it goes well perhaps you could post the adventures in the LoH section of the site for other GMs to use.

I can do that, but I doubt they'll be formatted and pretty like the last one I did. :)

Here are the first few characters I've finished for this month's game...

I stole the basic character sheet design idea from... hm. Someone on these boards, I wish I could recall so I could give him full credit. :( They are very simplified and (hopefully) easy to read for newbies.

Lemme know what y'all think. :bounce:

They look good, both in terms of layout, completeness and presentation. My only question is, do you think 4-8 pages is a bit much for an intro game? I'd hate to scare people off.

"Looks like we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?"
"Big Damn Heroes, Sir!"
"Ain't we just!"

I hope it won't be too much. I'm going to give the players the Background page first, let them choose their character and familiarize themselves with it. Then I'll let them have the first page, with their stats and whatnot. I'll explain the sheet and then answer any questions they have. The middle two sheets are straight-up combat stats, they'll only need to refer to them when/if a battle starts.

I could've easily condensed the whole thing down to 2 pages if I used 9-point font and didn't play with the pretty layout, but I wanted the pages to be easy to read at a glance, and nice to look at. We shall see if I erred on the proper side. :)

Just in case anyone is interested in some flavor text for the game I'm going to run (no, none of this is crucial to the game itself; it's just fluff)... :)

Just a reminder: Intro Fantasy Hero game this Friday, July 22, starting at 5:00 pm at Marshak's House of Fantasy (http://www.marshaks.com/) in Fort Collins, Colorado.

I'll let you all know how it turns out! :bounce:

Woo, just got back from a really good game. Small group -- just three players, but two of them had never played, nor indeed heard of, HERO before. They seemed to enjoy themselves. They got into character, picked up the system pretty quickly, and had fun. They told me that they normally play White Wolf, but were ready to try a new system (apparently all the crap that WW has been pulling lately has kinda alienated them).

They had just moved into town a week ago from Phoenix, hadn't yet found a new gaming group, saw my posters up at the FLGS, and decided to give it a whirl. I told them that I'd probably be running a superhero game next month, and they seemed really excited about that (they recently picked up SAS, but hadn't had a chance to try it). I think I'll be seeing them again.

The heroes learned what happened to the missing farmers and destroyed the Daemons before the infestation went out of control. One girl played the creepy goth chick from the Fair Folk Court of Autumn, one girl played the naive young priestess from the Sea of Grass, and one guy played the schmoozy Sergeant from the City of Fort Falcon. I added the uncertain Priest of the Spoken Word, just for added firepower, and the Sergeant recruited a couple of redshirts from the City (using the canary in the coal mine theory: if they die, things are bad). Somehow, he managed to keep both his redshirts alive, despite how bad things got. ;)

Overall, I'd call it a success. I'd've liked more players, but it worked pretty well for just the four of us -- and it looks like HERO might pick up a couple of converts over the long run. :bounce:

Wow, talk about a good time of year to get outta Phoenix! ;)

Thanx for the report, and running the game! It sounds like it went well.

I was remiss in neglecting to mention that my lovely wife also played in the game, helping out the new players when a question came up. It's always useful to have a ringer in the audience! ;)

Bill.
(Thank goodness she doesn't read these forums, else I'd be sleeping on the couch!)

Hey Bill,

If you need a Star HERO module, check out the LoH download page for A Change in Orders for Star HERO using the Terran Empire setting-- The 1.1 version includes the errata which consists of a few items that I forgot to put in the original :o. It is designed to work with Sidekick, Terran Empire, and one item out of Spacer's Toolkit

Designed to give different player 'types' (tactician, politician, emotionalist, etc...) playing opportunities. Ran the module for about 5:35 at DundraCon, but the material could fit into 4 hours.

Have you posted the hero designer export file for the character sheet format you used? or can you point me to it? Did the players react well to the large and open print format even though it had more pages?

Hero Designer? I wish. :( I'm not good enough to create an export file -- those were all done by hand. Yeah, I'm a massochist. :ugly:

I think, when I do this again, I'm going to drop it down to 3 pages. One for stats/powers/skills/disads, one for combat, and one for background/picture. Two combat sheets wasn't as cool as I thought it'd be; the players had to keep going back and forth.

Darn. Perhaps color coding as a frame around the various sections - Blue is defense, red is offense, something else for movement.

This month's (September's) demo: Teen Champions with the Teen Titans!

Here's the flyers I'm going to put out. The characters are posted on the Teen Titans Go! thread on the Champions board. :D

I just can't turn my back on you for a minute, can I Bunny? ;)

I've been swamped in RL and travelling a lot, and haven't been checking the boards regularly. I'm afraid I have a conflict tonight, but I look forward to the report (as always). Go get `em!

Sounds like a great time. I am actually in Wisconsin right now, but will be moving to the Denver Metro Area in 2 months time to take a new job. I'd love to come be a part of any HERO game that might be taking place. I'll keep checkin' in.
