View Full Version : WWYCD: The Binder

During the course of their typical day, your character finds a thick, black three-ring binder lying on the ground. On the front cover is a green Hero System logo. Inside, in protective plastic sleaves, are complete character sheets for the PCs and every significant NPC in the campaign world. There are also blank character sheets, two pencils, and some more sleaves in the pockets inside the covers.
If a character sheet is removed from the binder (except that of the character holding the binder), that character will vanish from existance without a trace and no one but the person holding the binder will have any memories of them. If the sheet is reinserted, said character automatically returns from oblivion.
If a new character sheet is inserted in the binder, the PCs will encounter the new character within an hour afterward. Any changes to the campaign world necessary to accomidate this new character's existance occur automatically.
Any changes made to a character sheet from the binder automatically occur in the appropriate character once the sheet is reinserted, though additional changes will automatically be made if necessary to balance out point totals.

My character isn't this creative, but I would be tempted to find the supervillains' character sheets, erase the most significant digit in their stats and powers, and then rent a safe deposit box and lock the binder in it.
If the character's major psychlim was triggered, he'd be tempted to take his own sheet out of the binder and drop the binder (and all the rest of its contents) into an incinerator.
If his minor pyschlim was activated, he'd be tempted to take out all the sheets except his own, make up a new character sheet (to his own specifications, which includes a certain Psychlim: Slavish Infatuation) for Montana Wildhack and insert that into the binder.
If neither psychlim activates, probably he just does the safe deposit box thing until something pushes him over the edge.

Givne the ration of villains to heroes and the fact that removing my character's sheet does not destroy my character both Brickhouse and Tom Cat would remove all the sheets and destroy them . . .

Shaister: would insert several zeros behind the listing of -base- points on his character, zero out his disads, and pour the points in a Cosmic based VPP, a skill pool, and would recreate a campaign standards sheet allowing only him to have 100d6 luck. For amusement Foxbat and Dr Destroyers Character sheets would be merged into one.
Hornet would modify every 'evil' twited, psychologically unstable NPC villain to be a selfless, dedicated hero via psych advantage changes; the mercenary for hire types would be transformed into normal humans sans powers--just lots and lots of useless skills (well, useless for villains--very good if you want a stable, honest job) , but leave them with most of their disadvantages.
Ranger--after stopping chortling with glee, would carefulyl study villains, make temporary alterations to them to make them vulnerable to common hero attacks.
Sanction--a very dark vigiante I ran a few times--- would probably just remove the resistant defenses of his current target. He hates to get to fancy or complicated.
Demon would just have a kicking RPG with funky sde effects for the real world until he realized what was up.

Return the binder to Foxbat.

Devilfire: Greg just happens to be an avid RPG player. After studying up on the Hero System rules he would rewrite his own sheet allowing him to keep his powers and, just to be an absolute b*stard about it, turning his demon half into a Care Bear (his GF, Rhea, still has a HUGE collection of those things, even at age 25).

Wow.
Millennium would try some careful experiments. Can characters change without their character sheets being changed? Or is this tangible proof of predestination and that free will is an illusion?
IF the character sheet must be changed first, re-write all the villian psych crocks so that they reform. If free will does exist, add code vs killing to all the villians, otherwise leave their character sheets unchanged.
Either way, add some psych crocks to all politicians and world leaders so that they are absolutely dedicated to peace, tolerance, species unity, and world harmony.
Add one power to his own character sheet, transform binder and contents to absolutely indestructable focus, one use only.
Iron Will would remove his own physical limitations.
Cheetah would change the Dex and Speed of every speedster to be less than his.
Snow Leopard would add Life Support, Immortal to every character sheet, and balance it with a psych crock "Concerned about enviroment/ecology" She would also create a character that can Summon extinct species back into existance.
Without doing the experimentation, Dolphin would also add a power to his character sheet to make the binder & contents indestructible. He would then drop it into the deepest spot in the Pacific Ocean.

Cool! Isn't this an item from the Warehouse 23 site?
I'll work up a reply in a bit.

Cool! Isn't this an item from the Warehouse 23 site?
Guilty as charged, your honor. :D
As for what my characters would do:
Wormhole: Being the dog that he is, Bradley would do one of two things: either give himself a group DNPC (harem) or add a psych lim: Madly In Love With Wormhole (Com, Str) to all the hotest supermodels and actress in the campaign world. He would also consider giving himself an obsenely high Seduction roll and a couple more points of COM.
Hardware: Up his Gadget Pool considerably, possibly give himself STR, DEX, CON, PRE, and SPD upgrades.
Air Raider: Would give himself characteristics upgrades across the board, arsenal upgrade, and if he's really feeling his oats, changes his Hunted By police to a Watched and give himself a law enforcement perk on par with Judge Dredd. Might also consider making Bridget a little less danger prone.
Tiger Shark: Give himself the ability to change back into his human form.

Tao would throughly exam the binder and commit it to memory, particularly the villians and her own teammates weaknesses, hopefully to improve her tactical analysis abilities. She wouldn't alter the papers in anyway, and would likely turn it over to the team leader after she was done. There is one being she would rip out and burn. The Blood Red King. UNLESS the changes in reality were retroactive then she wouldn't because it would negater her existence, thus making her unable to perform the act, thus making her exist...etc etc.
Harmony would be seriously weirded out and suspect it was some kind of joke. When the properties of the folder became apparent, she would immediately set to making herself and her friend more "Point efficient" With a 20 int and KS:Role player 16- she could to a pretty good job. She MIGHT give her friendly rival Liane a DR:Talks like a hippy (Con with effort, noticed), then secret the book away somewhere.
Eve would be thrilled! She could make everyone happy and nice and with boyfriends and stuff! She's very intelligent but has the mentality of a small girl. Things would get very interesting for awhile, until eventually she told her "father" and he gave her a talk about responsbility power and free will.

Humm...
Sunburn: Proably just use the darn thing as a way to up his KS: Superbeings roll to obsean hights. That is, by both studding the charater sheets AND modifing his own. Beyond that, he is to much of a boyscout to do anything else.
Lady Heart: Humm...s/he will proably rewrite him/herself to be able to use the Lady Heart powers without having to change genders to do so. Then, he might change it back, just because a "magical boy" with all theas love based magic powers looks kinda gay.
The Damsel: Humm...I would say my crossdressing wonder woulden't change a thing on his charater sheet, or anyone elses. Prehaps only one modification...makeing himself a real woman for a day or so, just to feal what that is like.

"St Barbara" would probably try to return the binder to its rightful owner; then have a nice chat with him or her, maybe buy them a cup of coffee and tell them to be more careful with such important items in future !

And what, prey tell, would St. Barbra do if she found out that the binder belonged to God? Or The Devil? And it was not a misplacement, but a test on humanity?

Astro-Knight He'd play around with it for a time, then Bury that thing on Pluto or something. It's too dangerous.
Defiant He might take away some villains powers, but he wouldn't tamper with their free will... it's unAmerican. ;)
Gaze Dominque would be written up, probably as a super heroine, alive and well. After that, I actually think the same ethics that keep Gaze from using his mental powers lightly would have him decide NOT to use the binder.
Max Thunder Begin curing people with it, in his mortal mood. If he's feeling his Olympian Oats, then hellooo Harem!
Recluse Whine "Whoa, this is WAY too powerful..." and go to Grandmother Spider with it and ask her advice. Of course, he might write himself up a girlfriend. He's lonely. (His own fault, he's also well, reclusive)
Triumph Oh dear. His daughter would meet Mr. Right, even if he had to create him. He'd probably boost the duration he could stay young and super heroic, and who knows what else.

And what, prey tell, would St. Barbra do if she found out that the binder belonged to God? Or The Devil? And it was not a misplacement, but a test on humanity? I don't know that it would make any difference. Just because she has taken the NAME "St Barbara" does not imply that she is of particularly religious bent. I haven't even thought about whether she believes in the Devil. If she discovered that she had given a powerful device to a particularly EVIL person or organisation she would probably try to alert the proper authorities and volunteer to lead whoever was assigned to get the damned thing back (if she didn't think that she could do it by herself)

Blackberry S. Firr doesn't believe such items should be lying around, where they can be misused!
She'd call a few of her family and friends with a more magical bent, and have them properly dispose of it--she's never encountered anything that couldn't be dealt with through some planning and cooperation.
