Hey hey! The Equipment Guide is now up in the Online Store in both printed and PDF format. A book/PDf bundle will be posted soon and there may be a Hero Designer Character Pack in the works, so once that is done the CP and book/PDF/CP bundle will also be available.
Enjoy!

 (http://misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) Since it's not on the shelves in my friendly local game store yet where I can thumb through it, I'll ask here. Is there any new material in this book, or is it all taken from previous publications?

For the most part it is all material from the books listed in theproduct description with a few new ones thrown in. It is mainly a consolidation of gear from other books.

I picked this up at Origins this weekend. While it is a compilation, this is exactly the kind of book I need, so I don't have to flip through Dark Champs and Fantasy Hero and every other book to find what I need.
Good stuff! :)

While some of the gear (or at least the gear's page references!) is updated for 5ER, the only "new" stuff that hasn't appeared in one of our books before is the nuclear bomb (which was in an issue of DH), the biological and chemical weapons, and the poisons.
Oh, and the award certificate, of course. ;)

Umm... wow. I was going to buy it thinking it was all new stuff, but now you almost UNsold me on buying it.
Of course being a HERO fanboy and geek I will buy it anyway. Sad buying a book just because it is HERO. Not the first time and won't be the last I am sure.

Well, we certainly don't want to deceive anyone. We've stated all along that it was a compilation of existing material, with only a little bit of new stuff. Even the back cover text (which is part of the "Our Products" listing) says so. ;)

Seriously, even though it's not new stuff (with the exceptions noted by Steve), it's worth it to me to have it all in one book instead of leafing though multiple books.
I will admit, though, if money was tighter, this would be one of the first Hero products to drop off the list (for me).
Fortunately, I now *almost* exclusively collect Harn and Hero stuff, and there's enough cashflow to support that.

Yep, this is pretty much my case exactly except for the HARN thing

We've found the WMDs and they're in the Hero System Equipment Guide. Invasionary forces are on their way. ;)

While I'm probably going to pick up the Equipment Guide anyway -- I love equipment guides of any kind (excepting d20 equipment guides) -- I never had a problem building WMDs. It's those sissy little pistols I have trouble getting just right. ;)

The Equipment guide I am picking up for the collector side, but I will find it useful upon occasion - I run too many cross genre games for it not to.
The other compilation book is the one I will find most useful as a reference and cannot wait for. :)

Actually, I'm very excited about it. Along with the Bestiary, it'll be nice for a quick reference.

Speaking of which, it'd be great to see a flowchart and checklist in such a book.

Well, I'm going to get this if only so that I can continue to say I own every non-Champs book. I'm the kind of guy who sits down and encodes all the HD files for Spacer's Toolkit so I don't have to shell out eight clams, so the lack of new material means I probably won't use it much. But I own everything that's not Champs (except DC:TAS, but I'm going to get that this week), so I'll get this, too.

I'm all for concise collections of data. One reason I find HD so helpful.
One more thing to add to the list. I like to let the new books build up until I can maximize my shipping dollar.

Something to show action and reaction in a combat sequence, such as "declare attack", "defender decides to preempt or not", path per each decision, that sort of thing.

True, but I suspect -- although I don't know -- that the cover price in some online stores can be much lower than in the official HERO Online Store. I've seen this ESPECIALLY on Stiggybaby.com.
I'm not being derisive towards HERO; five dollars, give or take, per book is trivial to me, minus a few trips to Hardee's. Just giving you a heads-up; I'm a shrewd internet shopper, so I've been around.

WHAT COMBAT HANDBOOK?
Blurb from the Products page:
It's up after Predators and Teen Champions, just before pulp hero.
The HERO System Combat Handbook: When you’re fighting the battle of your life and the fate of the world is on the line, it helps to have all the combat rules in one place! That’s what the HSCH does: it compiles all the existing HERO System combat rules in one easily-referenced volume. Starting with the entire text of Chapter Two of the Fifth Edition, Revised, it adds information and optional rules about combat from books like The Ultimate Martial Artist, Fantasy Hero, The Ultimate Brick, and other sources. It’s the perfect one-stop shopping place for HERO System combat rules, and a book that no HERO System fan will want to be without!

True, but I prefer give my money to DoJ or to my local gaming store. I want to see them both prosper and will spend my $ accordingly. If my local game store or DoJ were to go out of business I would be saddened but if Stiggybaby.com or some other online discount outlets went out of business I wouldn't bat an eye.

For sure, for sure. As a rule, I have no "customer loyalty" to any company or corporation (i.e., I like PlayStations, but I'm not a Sony fanboy). However, HERO Games is small and "grassroots" enough for me to actually feel some loyalty toward them. Only other company I ever felt that way about is... Sierra On-Line, back in the golden Quest for Glory, Space Quest, and King's Quest days.
So yeah, and I'm a huge, hopeless collector. I'm new to HERO and I only have three books so far, including FREd, but now that I like the system, I'll have stacks and stacks of books from HERO before too long. Hell, I'll probably even start playing Champions, and I have NEVER played in the Supers genre before. I have so many RPG books by now... a whole bookcase full, almost. I'll make room for HERO ones by selling all my d20 crap books off on EBay... ROFL.
'K, I'll shut up now. :straight:

I'll pick this up when the HD files come out and get the bundle. The Combat Handbook sounds kickass too. If not for me then for Rema who I am gradually starting to turn to HERO. I've got him entered in a few of the Learn HERO games at Gencon.

The PDF preview link in the store main page and on the product pop-up doesn't seem to be working. The former gives a 404, the latter just jumps to the top of the page.

I picked up for the reference value. It will be nice to have all the weapons, armor, and gear in one spot. And since I do a lot of adaptations of characters from different genres, it will make it easier to find sample items to work from.

Is that correct? The Equipment Guide won't be out to the local stores until early August? I'm not complaining at all... just excited. I've just gone by 4x of my local stores and they have all said that it hasn't been offered for ordering yet. If its going to be early August then I can go ahead and order it from the Online Store and can stop bugging the local managers for a copy.

Yes, I was referring to Combat Handbook. And Equipment Guide only left Canada last week, so I doubt anybody has it yet- we got our "special early books for Origins" two weeks ago, but the bulk didn't finish and ship until after we got back. dw
