Everybody party!

Can't argue with you there. :-)

Still, it's nice to be nominated two years in a row, and especially so for work for Hero Games; this is, I believe, the first time any of my Champs work has been nominated for a major award..

Congrats to DOJ/HERO and everyone involved!

(Didn't HERO win it all last year with the ENNies?)

Indeed it did! Champions Battlegrounds won best adventure (and Shades of Black took the Silver); Turakian Age won best setting, Fantasy Hero won best supplement, and these very boards won best website!

And here's the proof:

And last year, at least, free drinks at the ceremony (which was held in this cool old hall that used to be a train station.) The Ennies are rapidly becoming much more prestigious and professional (and I'd say that even if we hadn't won a fistful last year), and they're totally beating up the Origins Awards and taking their lunch money. I'll bet there's no damn belly dancers at this show... dw

I've just voted for the three nominated Hero System products, and a few others.

Caveat: before you vote, make sure you have a good connection! Assuming it works like last year, the ENnie folx are very strict about voting. They have a lot of security in place to prevent abuse of the system, and that means if you have a lousy net connection, or get timed out, or anything else accidentally happens to prevent you from finishing your voting, they will register you as having "voted," and that's that. Make sure you've got a stable connection and try to pick a time when it's not as likely they've got a lot of server activity.

Easy to vote. Turns out I'm not all tha familiar with the products in most categories, so I abstained from many.

But the Hero Products (Particularly DC) deserve the rub.

Green Ronin publishes for the d20 system (mostly). Anyone who publishes for the d20 system and does a halfway-decent job of it automatically has a larger fanbase than HERO. And nowadays -- as always -- "drive-thru" gamers greatly outnumber "crunchy" gamers.

Basically, HERO is crunchy, HERO publishes for its own proprietary rules system, we have a relatively small fan base compared to say, d20 or White Wolf... and the fact that HERO even gets nominations at all proves how much it kicks ass.

It also helps that GR is very active over on the EN boards- kind of a home field advantage. Not that they don't deserve the notice- they do very nice books and are friends of ours. dw

Yeah, my favorite of theirs is The Red Star Campaign Setting. A good publisher, they do indeed deserve recognition.

Along the same lines...

I think most of the nominations seemed appropriate to me. I have several of the non-Hero products on this list and they are pretty darn nice. For example, a couple of weeks ago I picked up Arcana Evolved. I was impressed. It is a nice book. ;)

NOW...the Origins Award...those nominations are [deleted four letter explative]...

You know, people always make that assumption, but without hard sales numbers (which us peasant fans aren't privy to) it's difficult to say. Certainly I've seen lots of d20 products languishing on game store shelves.

About the only thing we can say with confidence about the whole d20 spectrum is that D&D has a bigger fanbase than HERO. And anyone else in gaming for that matter.

Of course ENworld is devoted primarily to d20, so any of those games will have heightened exposure there. M&M being a very good game doesn't hurt it, though. :)

You could probably say that any d20 product inherrently targets a bigger audience than a HERO product, as that's one of the purposes of d20. Whether it reaches a large audience is another question. Any d20 product has to compete with a host of others (that may cover the same subject matter), whereas a HERO product doesn't compete with any other HERO products (though it may compete with other RPG products, as all RPG products do).

Anyway... HERO is in very good company among the Ennies nominees, a testament to HERO's quality. I also find it very interesting that, unlike Origins, GURPS didn't get nominated for anything, yet HERO did.

This question also came up on RPGnet, and the person in charge of the nomination/ voting process for ENworld stopped in to answer. According to her Steve Jackson Games didn't submit any products from the past year to the ENnies for consideration, so they couldn't be nominated. Apparently a publisher has to make the effort to put themselves in the running.

Ah, yes. I'd forgotten about that.

Still, it's nice to see that the most popular RPG community on the 'Net has a strong HERO fan contingent. HERO books get reviewed there all the time, and the talk surrounding it is usually positive.

I've got a good feeling about DOJ's chances. If last year's Ennies were any indication, there's a lot of HERO-love in the ENWorld community.

Granted, I would be really happy if Burning Wheel swept its nominations, too.

The thing to remember is that last year had most of the awards separated into d20 and non-d20 categories. This year, I believe the only area of separation is that there is a separate category for best d20 game, so I'm not sure that last year's performance at the Ennies can be used to determine much about this year's.
