View Full Version : Partially Limited Characteristics

I am building a character that has some of his primary and secondary characteristics bought Only In Hero ID, and the program does not seem to calculate figured characteristics correctly, depending on how the mix is done. I have also tested this with using a Focus.
For example, I buy a 16 CON base, and then I buy +7 CON OIHID or through a Focus, and the system will give me 4 ED base instead of 5.
Another example is if I buy an 18 DEX/4 SPD base (36 Active and Real points), and then I buy +8 DEX and +2 SPD OIHID, the extra cost for the boosted stats is 44 Active and 35 Real. Shouldn't that first extra point of SPD cost me less than 10 full active points?
I have read through Fred on Characteristics as Powers, and it seems like I should be able to get the figured characteristics to calculate as I have understood the rules to say they should work, but it doesn't. Am I missing something?

IIRC The app rounds at every step.
So buying 2 chunks of a stat will cause it to calculate each seperately for Figureds (and rounding) and then add the result together.

Correct again, Killer Shrike!
Figured Characteristics are rounded incrementally for each purchase. This is a requirement of the rules, since you can have different mods on the purchases which affect the Figured Characteristics (No Figured, for example).

Okay, I can understand that. But if I have a character that buys 8 points of DEX, the program still requires me to pay 10 points for 1 point of SPD, even if they share the same limitation of OIHID. Why is it working as if I put "No Figured Characteristics" even when I didn't?

Per Steve, the only time you can take advantage of "partial points" of SPD is in purchasing (or selling) your base SPD Characteristic by one point.
SPD when purchased as a Power always costs 10 points, no matter what your DEX is.

Based on the reply I got from Mr. Long in the 5th Edition Rules Questions, it looks like I should be able to pay the remaining points to "make up the difference" for that extra point of SPD, rather than pay a full 10 points, if both the extra DEX and SPD are bought through a limitation in common like a Focus or OIHID. That was how I always understood it to work. I now understand the rounding rule for things like the CON and ED question I asked above, but HeroDesigner as it is configured right now appears to totally ignore DEX when calculating an increase to SPD as a secondary calculation.
What I was trying to do was create an 18DEX/4SPD normal form, and a 26DEX/6SPD super form. If I'm now understanding everything correctly, then I need to pay 36 points for my normal form and 28 more points for my superpowered form.

Nope....check the followup question. HD is doing things properly.

To be a bit more helpful, here's the FAQ entry that Steve referred to in his initial response to you....he may have misspoken on the overall CON, but his statement on SPD was correct:
<blockquote>
Q: If a character has “fractional SPD” (i.e., he has a DEX score not ending in a 0 and has not paid the difference in Character Points to buy up his SPD), when he buys SPD as a Power, does he pay 10 Character Points per point, or the fractional difference? For example, if a character has DEX 14, SPD 2, if he buys SPD as a Power does it cost him 10 Character Points or 6 Character Points?
A: He pays 10 Character Points per point of SPD.

Okay, I guess I pretty much beat this horse to death. According to the latest answer from Mr. Long, it looks like I can buy the DEX OIHID and No Figured Characteristics, and the SPD OIHID. I can live with that.
