Of the four super mercenaries ( Lazer, Steel Commando, Mechassassin, Hazard ), which is your favorite?? Which do you find most useful??

Which do you most loath having your character fight??

Of the four listed, Hazard. I prefer Utility though.

My favorites aren't on the list..

If we are only using current 5th editon characters, then Utility all the way.

If we can go back to previous editions, then it's Bullet as an individual and the Destruction Company in the team catagory.

I personally like Steel Commando. He gave my players a good pounding before being chased off... :eg:

Who's bullet?

BULLET--Aka Randolph Ball. Originally a mercenary soldier, he became a bounty hunter who went after supervillains. Carried a pistol that used both lethal and non-lethal rounds, gas and flash grenades, and employed other super-gadgets. Leader of the Raiders, which included Big John, a Scottish strongman with Growth powers, and an alien explorer named Starseer.

All three characters first appeared in Enemies III, and again in Classic Enemies for 4E.

That's the short of it--hope that helps.

That's who I was thinking of allright.

Although I ditched Starseer & added a few super-skilled normals to round out the Raiders. Bullet just had a certain contempt for the pajama crowd that always endeared him to me.

Bah... none of them compare to Cyber Blade... mercenary for hire and my long term character.

Fezzik. Immortal Turkish Brick who has to work for those more intelligent and charismatic than he. While his powers and abilities are limited to fighting physically, he is the best at it. After all, he is the Brute Squad.

In the Midguard campaign, both Z'lf and Silhouette know that it is about to hit the fan when they hear that deep greeting from behind rumbling, "Hello, lady."

Kevin Armstrong, in the PRIMUS e-book. Showed the heroic side of the IRA; how they were really on the side of the angels, just misrepresented by their evil enemies.

*BWAHAHAHAHA*

Talk about ruining a perfectly good character... Hopefully that part won't get carried over into 5e later...

Given Kevin Armstrong has an entirely different origin in 5e already, I doubt it.

( he left PRIMUS for VIPER when the Battle of Detroit convinced him that the authorities weren't willing to do what it took to protect society from the likes of Dr Destroyer, and were hypocritical about their own nature re: backbiting and internal politics )

Killer Shrike from Marvel Comics.

Utility from HERO.

Of the four given, I've only had extensive experience as a player with Mechassassin; our GM played him as a nemesis quite well.

I'm another who'll always have a soft spot for Utility, however. The origin story originally presented combined with seemingly unlimited plot potential was one of the reasons Utility was virtually the only Hero System character to make an appearance in every campaign we ran back in the day.

Killer Shrike from Marvel Comics.
Wow...glad I'm not the only one who always loved this guy. He and Whiplash/Blacklash were the inspiration behind many heroes and villains in my younger gaming days.

Interesting, the number of Utility fans on this thread. While I like the concept, I have never cared much for the name. I feel it lacks stature, impact--and really, it doesn't get the point across. You hear the name, and think, "What kind of name is 'Utility?'"

Yeah, I know--Dr. Destroyer and Foxbat were already taken. But I think he could do better. I envisioned him taking the "I am smarter and better than everyone, especially superhumans" further than ever, and calling himself--Ultimate One. His costume would be a sort of "bulletproof latex" which would cover his entire body, with a faceplate that would leave doubt as to whether he was a cleverly disguised human--or an android.

I also envisioned him taking over The Ultimates, after Binder was either imprisoned or incapacitated. Binder would eventually go after him, but the Ultimates would be doing so well under Ultimate One's leadership that they don't want Binder back. Chaos ensues as Binder recruits a rival team of Ultimates, or--all together now--Turns To The PCs For Help!

Perhaps this should be in another thread--Re-Imagining Champions Universe Characters.

Like everyone else, I'm fond of Utility, though I'm not sure he really qualifies as a 'super-mercenary'. Sure, he'll fight heroes for money, but he's not really profit-motivated. He'd fight them anyway, any cash that happens along is just gravy.

Of the four listed, the only one I've ever actually encountered was Lazer, in the very last 4th ed. campaign I ever participated in. My character in that campaign, a chi-based super speedster named Wind Dragon, not only took him out in one phase, but was forced to expend another phase saving Lazer from plummeting to his death after he went unconscious and lost control of his jet pack. Not an auspicious appearance for him. Still, it WAS memorable... ;)

I've used Lazer a little differently. Having grown tired of getting his teeth knocked out, Lazer uses his professional name and accumulated earnings to go back to his roots and set himself up as a high-tech super arms-dealer. If the reward were high enough , he occasionally he might do sniper-work of some sort, but would prefer the much easier life of an arms-dealer.

True, but he does have the 'went mercenary' period in his life still. And the 4e PRIMUS e-book had him leaving PRIMUS when he discovered the 'dark truth' behind PRIMUS' dealings (instead of trying to expose them, natch).

Yeah, but in order to insert that, they'd literally have to shoehorn it in, as the full writeup for him in VIPER makes no mention of it at all.

Plus, in 5e, his mercenary period had a completely diffferent trigger: VIPER thinking he was a plant and wanting him dead. :)

Agreed. Still remotely possible, but here's hoping not.
