I don't have HERO or Champions yet (waiting for them to arrive from an eBay sale), so I'm not up on the rules of character creation at all...

...but I was wondering how you guys would create Grifter from Image Comics' WildC.A.T.S.

As I recall Grifter was the gun guy who never misses from WildCats right? Hyper Accuracy?

Lots of ways to do that to a point. You will never get a 'never misses' in HERO System; but you can get a 'almost never misses accept on an 18' vs most opponents.

You can buy lots of Ranged Combat Levels.

You can buy lots of Penalty Skill Levels vs Range Penalties.

If in a Equipment costs Money campaign you can buy several 'Naked Power Advantages' like Autofire x 5 on RKAs up to X Active Points.

If in a Equipment costs Points campaign, there are many ways to buy up an RKA or EB or both to model attacks that require a 'OIF: gun of opportunity', so that he can pick up just about any gun and be deadly with it.

Oh yeah, whatever you do, make sure he has a DEX and SPEED on the high side.

I think the better question is...Why would you do Grifter?:D

Well, I'm not wanting to do Grifter himself...I'm just liking his abilities.

I have a character idea that I wanna use, and I want him to kinda have the same general powers of Grifter (I think he's got a healing factor, and he's very resistant to damage, and others that I don't necessarily wanna do), only with a twist.

Here's my basic character idea:

A guy with an abnormally high amount of static energy (electricity) in his body. It's so powerful that he actually has to release it, or else he'll die. He's got specially designed guns (and maybe a lightsaber type sword) that draws that energy from his body and can shoot pulses of energy. Since it's natural energy, he's got the ability to use the guns for stun or actual (maybe concussive?) damage. I wanted to make him a crack shot with his guns and have super reflexes and the healing factor and be an awesome hand-to-hand fighter (all like Grifter)...

Does that help?

Grifter was trained as a Coda by Zealot. Grifter doesn't have a healing factor, nor is he resistant to damage. If you read current issues of WildCATS you'll find him in a wheel chair.

Grifter is highly accurate with his guns, but he does miss as well. He is highly trained with their use. He is the only member of Team 7 that didn't use the ability that he gained regularly, aside from Lynch.

Greywind...

Cool, fill me in on where Grifter is now! I still wanna have those powers for my guy, tho!

The guns sound like they should be bought as a multipower (a cost break for two or more powers, where only one is used at a time) with an energy blast (ranged stunning damage) slot and a ranged killing attack slot. Reduce the cost using Obvious Accessible Focus or Obvious Inaccessible Focus (probably the former; the latter is very hard to disarm).

For crack shot, look at the Area Effect One Hex Accurate advantage, which makes it very easy to hit any target. Alternatively, look at the Combat Skill Levels (the 3-point levels in OCV for your gun).

The sword is probably a Hand Killing Attack, probably again with an Obvious Accessible Focus limitation. It probably belongs outside the multipower, but if you think it fits inside thematically, ask the GM.

Beyond that, your character probably needs a relatively high DEX (ask the GM for campaign standards), good Speed (again, ask the GM), some martial arts possibly (extended selection of hand to hand combat maneouvers), maybe some combat skill levels, maybe Lightning Reflexes.

For the healing factor, look to Healing, probably the Regeneration option.

Needing to release the energy maybe a Susceptibility/Dependence, Physical Limitation, or just something neat with no points cost associated.

For character design, you typically do a first draft which is at or above the points available, then slim back. Go to Champions (when you get it) and start with Nighthawk's characteristics and then start adding some of the above powers.

It's all a matter of FX. If you want to 'never' miss in HERO, buy a ranged attack with the Invisible advantage at +1/4. Define that advantage as it always seeming to connect from point A to B under scrutiny.
From then on, you can claim there was no 'miss', but a bad die roll was simply the cause of blind luck or the defenses of the enemy being too powerful to overcome so it did no damage.

Cool...Hopefully I'll get it in within the next 2 days or so, and then I can start reading to figure out how the heck to play the game/create characters...

I think one guy said his Lone Ranger character never missed. He always performed the 'covering' maneouvre. If he blew the roll, his character just said, 'The shot's not there'. If he made it, just pull the trigger and hit....

It's not the same as hitting every time you want to shoot something, but you never do actually pull the trigger and miss.

Jester, feel free to ask for advice. Lots of great people around here (and sometimes, lots of ways to do something).

Great, thanks Tom! Yeah, people here seem to be ready to help out, which is a great thing! I'll do that!

On the contrary, you can create a character who never misses.

Use the cover maneuver. Since the shot is not fired unless you succeed in the cover roll, you effectively never miss. You may not get a shot off every phase, but when you do shoot... you never miss. You get a small penalty for covering... but so what? You want the kewl rep or not?
