Is there any way to change the default attribute value from 10 to 8 in this version?

You'll need to create a custom template, setting the BASE value for the characteristics.

Another question, is there an online tutorial for doing that? I don't think I have the documantation anymore.

You can download the docs from the free stuff section. They're a bit sketchy in regards to creating custom templates, but it's the best you're going to get for v1 (which is out of date and has been "end of lifed").
