View Full Version : When would you like The Ultimate Mentalist

This is a simple poll. Would you like DOJ to immediately bump The Ultimate Mentalist to the front of the line and get in done ASAP, or are you okay with seeing it come out whenever it comes out.

Well, it's even more simple than that. This is really just a lame attempt to get DOJ to immediately bump The Ultimate Mentalist to the front because so many of us really want that. I just made it a poll in case there isn't as many of us who really want that as I think, in which case I'll understand if DOJ doesn't speed things up just for me. Even though I'd really really appreciate it if they did.

Some of us already know when it's coming out. Of course, we don't need it. :nya:

Eh... I can live without it. And there are at least a half dozen books on the schedule I want more than the UM. I think a more intersting poll would be "What scheduled product do you want now?"

This is a tough vote for me. I already have the original TUM, so I know how useful it is for expanding the possibilities for mentalists in all campaigns, even as a 4E supplement. OTOH because I already have it, I feel no urgent need for it.

I was initially a little surprised that TUM didn't come out much earlier than this. I would have thought that expanded mentalist rules would be a higher priority than, say, The Ultimate Metamorph, since mental powers appear in so many genres. Updating an existing book also seemed like an easier task than crafting an entirely new one. After all, The Ultimate Martial Artist was an existing book that received a 5E makeover.

On going back over TUM again, though, I realized that much of what that book covers has already made it into other 5E volumes: many new rules for mental powers, not to mention background on the Varanyi. It seems to me that the 5E edition will have to be much more of an original creation than the second edition of UMA was.

From a strictly selfish point of view, I'd rather see them release brand-new books ahead of 5th Edition updates of books that were done in the past, simply because I already have the versions that were done in the past.

If it were any other book, I'd agree with you, but after getting The Ultimate Martial Artist... UMA, while is has a big section on martial arts styles and stuff, just like the 4th edition, there is a huge amount of info new and unique to the 5th edition version. And the general rules concernin martial arts haven't changed much.

The general rules for Mental Powers have changed, so I expect whatever's in the Ultimate Mentalist to be more than just an update, but a complete revision, of the previous material.

On a side note, how do you feel about CKC? Personally, I'd like to have seen a book like the Ultimate Mentalist come out before it, especially since I already own Classic Enemies, Classic Organizations and a number of other 4th edition villain books.

I bought CKC for two basic reasons. To support DOJ I'm buying a copy of every book they release. :) And because while I don't run things in their universe, pre-built characters are useful mines for good ideas.

That being said, the only books I have less interest in than enemy books are pre-built adventures. I still buy them when they print them, for the same basic reasons that I buy enemy books. But to be selfish, I'd rather have something more "useful" to me, like UM.

'Course they don't really need to cater to me, since unless they suddenly start producing books that I feel are crappy (which they haven't even come close to so far) I'll buy whatever they print. And they know it. 'Cause I've told 'em. :D

I guess I'll abstane from the vote. I have the old version of the Ultimate Mentalist and it was a wonderful book. I have high hopes for the 5th Ed. version as well. I will certainly buy it when it becomes available. However, I am currently running a Dark Champions campaign and playing in a Fantasy Hero campaign, neither of which has any significant psionics. Therefore I am not in a particular rush for this book to be released. Most of my hopes are for more Dark Champions material. I'd like to see the new Horror Hero ASAP since my DC game will likely have some monster hunter elements in it.

The funny thing is, if Steve buckles down right now and starts writing it, it'll come out at about the time that it's currently scheduled. (At least, from what I can tell.)

I'd love to have it now, personally. But I have a caveat: only if it in no way interferes with the release of The Ultimate Skill. I want that book more than any not-yet-published book on the lists.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ulimate Mentalist be one of the books postponed to the 2007 schedule. Let's face it, some books are likely to be postponed as Hero still hasn't gotten out all the books that were on the 2005 schedule yet and they have one less full-time employee now than when the 2006 schedule was planned.

So why do I think the Ultimate Mentalist may be one of the books postponed? Two reasons.

First, we just got Ultimate Metamorph, are about to get Ultimate Speedster, and are due to get Ultimate Skill in August (and Steve has pretty much confirmed that the GenCon target for Ultimate SKill is still a go). So, it would
make sense to postpone Ultimate Mentalist to avoid Ultimate overload.

Second, note that in the posted 2006 schedule, Ultimate Mentalist was due to come out around the same time as Psychic Wars. Due to Allen's departure, Psychic Wars has been indefinitely postponed, so it may be that Hero will wait and do Ultimate Mentalist when Psychic Wars is rescheduled (assuming it ever it is). Or they may simply feel that without Psychic Wars, Ultimate Mentalist is less of a priority.

Mind you, this is all speculation on my part and is not based on any real information from Darren or Steve.

Oh, yeah, and one more thing. I suspect that the reason we saw Ultimate Vehicle, Ultimate Brick, Ultimate Metamorph, and Ultimate Speedster before Ultimate Mentalist is that all four of those books were contracted to freelancers in the pre-DoJ days and DoJ may have wanted to get those out first, before doing any others. Again, this is just speculation.

Based on my recent gaming mood I have changed my mind and voted NOW (I had previously cast no vote). I always like the old Ultimate Mentalist and would like to see the update.

I am on the Hero System Diet. Buy Hero Books instead of food and loose weight.

Damn your cursed logical perspective!

But you must be wrong... DOJ caters to public opinion and desire, right? They'll see this post, and the dozen other posts going on at any given time about Mental Powers and see a need for the suppliment, right? RIGHT? Please tell they'll see it!!!
