Hey all! The lovely and talented Paul Tevis, occasionally of Steve Jackson Games and avuncular host of the "Have Games, Will Travel" podcasts, interviewed yours truly about some of the design philosophies of the Hero System at Gencon SoCal a couple weeks back. The link is http://havegameswilltravel.libsyn.com, and our interview is "Gencon SoCal Special #4," an mp3 file lasting about ten minutes. If you've never checked these out, let me recommend Paul's stuff; he frequently has fascinating guests and also does occasional reviews (including the odd Hero product.)
The discussion is largely about the effects-based design philosophy of Hero, and focuses heavily on the differences and similarities between Hero and GURPS since a lot of Paul's audience comes from SJG. We also talk about a seminar we had just attended by Jared Sorensen and John Wick in which I wound up in a friendly debate with them about the value of generic systems versus rules designed expressly for a single style of game. Some more of their side of the argument can be found in their own interview elsewhere on the page.
