View Full Version : Boards Banner problem... ?

For some reason, since Saturday morning, I've been unable to load these discussion boards using Opera 8.5. I'm currently using MSIE 6.0, and even here it takes an incredibly long time to load.

The only hint I have as to a reason is the banner just below the menu bar (User CP - FAQ - Members List - etc.), which shows an "Action canceled" message ("Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you...") if I leave it open long enough.

Probably nobody else has this problem... could it be related to my employer's content filter?

Most likely due to your employer's filter -- the location you're describing is where Google's AdSense bar goes in. The ads are drawn in via a JavaScript call to google's server(s).

Was anything changed here on Friday that might cause this behavior? (I know some people were complaining about adult ads popping up, though I never saw them myself....) I don't have this problem with other sites that use AdSense.

There are no popup ads through AdSense.

There are no popup ads through AdSense.I meant "popping up" in the more colloquial sense.

Going back to the actual question I asked, was anything changed here on Friday that might cause this behavior?

Nope.

Hm. Now, they're simply not showing up at all for me. There's a space for them, but it's simply empty black space at the top of each forum or thread...

<rubs chin>

Hmm... for me too... very peculiar, to say the least.

For me the ad box say's you are not authorized to view this page. I also have to hit the back button twice to go back once, this has been happening since I logged in last night at about 2 am. I'm using the current version IE. Well be back later tonight to see if it has worked it self out.

Having the same problem, what gives?

Apparently Google wasn't too pleased with how "well" the ads were doing and shut down the service for this site. I'm working with them now to see if I can get things resolved (a 0.3% click through rate, while a bit higher than average, is certainly nothing exorbitant).

Ah. They were displeased with how WELL the links were doing. I see . . .

Speaking for myself, I didn't click on any links I wasn't interested in.

Hopefully things will work out.

I think I clicked through two links .. at least one of which will end up in a purchase when I get paid again next week. hrm... .3% is a high number? seems internet advertising doesn't expect much of a return.

Puny banner. If the advertisements are more effective than the sponsors are willing to pay for, it should automatically switch to just saying "ads by google" or something. Or "patch activex now!!11"

I was starting to wonder why it was working fine all of a sudden.

(It's even conceivable that this was related to my earlier problem... not likely, but conceivable.)

I'm working with them now to see if I can get things resolved (a 0.3% click through rate, while a bit higher than average, is certainly nothing exorbitant). So let me get this straight... they have software that tries to work out what adverts are most likely to be clicked on if shown on a particular page, based on the content of the page being an indicator of the interests of the individual viewing the page, and then when the software actually seems to work on a site with a very narrow demographic (geek roleplayers) by displaying ads that really are interesting to them.... they say "Oh, no! That can't be right! Our software doesn't work that well!" and switch it off. Plus, being new, the ads had a certain novelty value that caused some folks to click them out of curiosity, but you can't stop that happening.

I don't miss the ads one bit, but good luck on getting the payment you're due out of Google, Dan!

Indeed indeed, I have worked this at my company, they shouldn't be chafing at that at all.

Very true, but think about it, would you watch an ad on TV if you had a choice? Or, I should say, consider how infrequent it would be, not that it wouldn't happen at all.

This low % is why we're seeing more and more aggressive marketing, with "eye blasters" (the type of ads that move around the screen on you), and so on (I forget, but there's a "monkey-"something sort of ad type as well I just heard from Marketing the other day, they have interesting names for these things, I think eye blaster is already a passe term)

I think if they aren't going to let you disable the ads in any way or form, they shouldn't disallow them for you if people click too often. Most programmers can make a script where after two clicks from a particular IP they go away.

I don't watch TV ... can't compare.

So when less aggressive marketing works better they turn it off?

Heh, well that's a whole other story. Obviously, they're concerned with fraud, but rather foolish with their implementation.
