Tonight was the first session of my new Champions campaign. Everyone had a blast, and here's the recap.
Champions Victoria: Issue One
The Players:
The Black Watch: Colin Campbell, high school shop teacher (Power Armor suit)
Red Cross: Dr. Richard Curall, MD. (Brick with ranged healing powers)
The Shadow: Jericho Chambers, Thrifty Foods employee (Martial Artist/Energy Projector)
Scene One, A meeting at Beacon Hill Park
11:00 PM
All three characters receive a telepathic summons to Beacon Hill Park, and arrive simultaneously. An unknown mental voice (describing itself only as a “friend”) explains that it has brought them together to save the city from the Slug, who is intent on transforming the entire population into Elder Worms. The “Friend” does not know the Slug's exact location, only that it is somewhere in the industrial are near Bay St. and that whatever it is doing will be using a lot of power. Despite the secrecy of the source, the trio decide to follow up on the tip.
Black Watch uses his computer link to pull up an image of the city's late night power draw, and finds five sites in that area that appear to be drawing a lot of power.
Scene Two, Search
11:30 PM
Moving to the affected area, they first investigate a warehouse owned by a local “replica” car company. A stealthy investigation by The Shadow shows that it is nothing more than late night work fulfilling orders, and the group moves on.
While The Shadow is investigating, Black Watch goes to a gas station for coffee and gas for his flight turbines, leaving an IOU.
Scene Three, Discovery
12:00 AM
The next location, supposedly an abandoned warehouse, piques their interest. The Shadow slips through the ceiling via desolidification, then attempts to hide (failed stealth roll) above the lights to see what's going on. He sees a human working at some sort of altar/alien machine and in a walled off office, the Slug. Meanwhile the Black Watch goes underwater to see if he can see anything. As the Black Watch finds a secret underwater entrance, the Shadow is jumped by the Leech.
Teleporting out of the Leech's grasp, the Shadow attempts to possess the human working on the “altar,” only to be prevented by the alien effect of the Slug's mind control. The Slug comes out of the office and blasts the Shadow with his mental entangle. Meanwhile, the sounds of combat has drawn Red Cross, who smashes through the warehouse door, only to be jumped by Leech. Realizing his powers are useless against the Slug's mental paralysis, and taking damage from his Gem Blasts, the Shadow teleports out of the building, leaving the Slug free to concentrate on Red Cross. Black Watch is third on the scene, making a dramatic flying move-through that smashes both the Leech and Red Cross into the altar, and leaves him in position to engage the Slug. Just as Red Cross finally breaks free (pushing his reduced strength) Black Watch takes down the Slug, and Leech makes his escape (jumping up to the ceiling and using his camouflage powers to vanish).
They have successfully saved the city and captured the Slug, but the Leech is free (and Red Cross wants him badly).
Two hours later, an UNTIL force from Vancouver arrives to take the Slug into custody.
Scene Four, Fire.
2:00 AM
As the heroes are leaving, they see a low income housing complex that had been almost completed become a column of flame, and dash to the scene. They arrive just in time to see Bulldozer throwing one fire truck at another, while Blowtorch is working on the building. Red Cross dives to intercept the fire truck, but is unable to catch it and is flattened underneath it. Bulldozer immediately proclaims that he meant to hit the superhero. A flying tackle from Black Watch takes Blowtorch into the water where he is swiftly defeated. Meanwhile, the Shadow teleports into melee range with Bulldozer and quickly takes him apart, hitting him so fast that the villain is unable to respond with a single blow. Red Cross takes the opportunity to rescue the innocents from the fire.
With the villains captured, the heroes discover that both are now unaware of their actions. They have no knowledge of why they are in Victoria, or even why they are working together to destroy this building. They appear to have been subjected to some form of mind control. Investigating the wreckage, they are sure the building was not built to code, but the destruction is great enough that it may be difficult to prove. Black Watch's hacking skills prove to him that KLM construction that built the unit, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the developer (Murdoch Developments).
Who controlled the villains to destroy the low income housing development, and why? Is it a simple insurance scam? Who is the mental voice that gathered the heroes together? What does he, or she, want? Will Brother Nature make an appearance?
These questions, and many more, will be asked at the next session of “Champions Victoria.”
