View Full Version : Kid Whiz and his SuperSonic Skateboard

I'm trying to build as a Teen Champions character a guy called Kid Whiz. Hew's basically a super-normal kid with access to a few special things. And one of them is the SuperSonic Skateboard.

It isn't actually supersonic -- even superhero-world phsyics has some limits -- but it is faster than almost all cars. The problem is that it is limited. Kid Whiz can't do anything while riding it that would severely unbalance him, or he'll fall off. He'll also fall off if he takes ANY knockback in combat, meaning he'll have to wait to start using it again until it comes back to him (it'll usually go on for two or three phases before the onboard chiop realizes there's nobody standing on it and returns to the homig beacon on hbis wrist) and takes an action to climb back on.

This also raises the question of how to model a focus (and the skateboard is clearly a focus for Running or a smiliar power) that requires a high degree of specialized skill to use effectively -- in other words, you don't dare lend it to one of your friends because they'd be dangerous to everyone around them if they tried to use it. There are innumerable examples of this: a 24th-century Starfleet officer operating as a super on 2006 Earth would not want to give a hand phaser to one of his friends without some careful training...

well here's what i did firstly its not a focus because its self powered and will return if you put it down or for that matter if some one takes it away, so instead its a physical manifestation with restrainable.

because he has no knock back resistance when riding it i used flight only in contact with a surface bought with no turn mode.

to represent the time it take to remount the board and get back to speed i put delayed phase on the activation.
i added a required skill roll to represent the need for a skilled pilot and gestures requires both hands to stop him performing any complex tasks whilst riding.

17 Flight 20", No Turn Mode (+1/4) (50 Active Points); Restrainable (-1/2), Gestures (Requires both hands; -1/2), Only In Contact With A Surface (-1/4), Extra Time (Delayed Phase, Only to Activate, -1/4), Physical Manifestation (-1/4), Requires A Skill Roll (Active Point penalty to Skill Roll is -1 per 20 Active Points -1/4)

Is there any reason why this can't be built as a vehicle? Using it could require Transport Familiarity: Supersonic Skateboards. You could then make it a summon or follower, so that the kid has the ability to call it back when it gets away form him.

Also, what's the kids SPD? At a SPD of 4, 20" of Flight or Running gives you a combat speed of about 30 MPH, so you would need at least x4 NCM to outpace most cars. I'd probably go with a SPD of 6, even if 2 or 3 of that is "pilot spd" (ie, only to move) and then atleast 28" of total movement. That gives you a combat speed of about 62.5 MPH and a base NCM of 125 MPH.

If you go with a flight based construct, I would not put No turn mode on the board. Let the kid take Movement skill levels instead. That makes the thing even harder to operate if anyone tries to steal it.

Great concept. Shame about the name.

It's not that bad. It's a pun on the term "Whiz Kid", which is still used t6o describe a prodigy. And when he goes by on that skateboard, you'll certainly be thinking "Look at that kid whizzing by!"

Yes, I am aware that there is another meaning for "whiz", but there isn't a word left in the English language that isn't used as a euphemism for something nasty involving sexuality or other bodily functions. The only way now to avoid saying dirty words is not to speak at all.

I use Whiz Kid as a name for a teen speedster in my world. It's nicely Silver Age, and the "smutty" meaning doesn't bother me in the slightest.

After all, I've got a character called Uranus Lad as well...

And one of the most popular anime heroines ever created is Sailor Uranus. Of course, it's not the same pun in Japanese, buit it hasn't bothered American fans at all. (Although that "cousins" thing is still an enormous beef fans have with the people who produced the Sailor Moon S dub....)
