View Full Version : DCU: What team would you join?

Supreme Serpent

The DC version of Hermit's Marvel poll:

Okay, this thread starts with some basic preset and inflexible rigging.

Let us assume you:
1) Exist in the DC Universe.
2) Have super powers, and whatever your mindset is in the 'real' world, here, you are heroic in the DCU.
3) You can join any team you want as an accepted member but only one team, and you must join a team.

That set down, which team (name, incarnation, etc) would you pick?

Poll coming.

I know very, very little about most DC teams beyond JLA.

Having said that: Birds of Prey. Why? Well... C'mon.... ;)

Legion of Superheroes, but the pre-1984 version (before Crisis and the post-Crisis Superman reboot did horrible things to them).

This one would actually be tougher for me than the Marvel poll.

Too old to be a Teen Titan - scratch that one pretty quick.

Doom Patrol, Suicide Squad - not if I can help it.

Outsiders....meh.

Either JLA or JLE would be neat. Playing in the real big leagues, literally. Global Guardians would be an interesting group too. Legion of Superheroes - get to go into space on a regular basis, see the future first hand...wow. JSA - love lots of the original JSA folks, cool they're still around, and many of the newer members are great too. Great place for a new hero to be.

Toss up between JSA and LSH for me.

Birds of Prey, because of all the teams, their leader seems to put the most effort into keeping the team members sane and alive...

As a rule of thumb, I avoid joining groups with Suicide or Doom in their name. Also High Colonic, but that's a different story.

Old enough that joining anything with "Teen" in the name would be creepy.

Have to go with John Desmarais, the pre-Crisis LSH.

The Legion for me as well. Why ? I want to be Mon-El. Not because he has powers like Superman, oh no. Because he dates Shadow Lass. Yes I am that shallow.

Tough one, but either JLA when they were actually heroes and not mind raping each other, or the classic Legion of Superheroes when they were fun and weren't having their continuity changed every few months. :)

I'd join the original incarnation of the Justice Society of America in 1941. Not only could I take part in all their original adventures, but because all JSA members were also members of the All-Star Squadron during WWII, I could pop up there as well (most notably in All-Star Squadron Annual 3, where I could be part of the large group of All-Stars batthed in the energies of Ian Karkul that would slow down our aging). Also, by extension, I would be pretty much retired during the 1950s, only to return when the group reforms in the 1960s and thus get to take part in the annual team-ups with the JLA. In the 1970s, I would be there for the emergence of the beginning of a second generation of JSAers including the real Huntress (Helena Wayne, the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle) and Power Girl (Kal-L's cousin from Krypton) which would continue into the 1980s with Infiinity Inc.

Of course, I would then have large chunks of my memory rewritten by the Crisis on Infinite Earths and spend several years in limbo fighting Ragnarok over and over again with my teammates until our return to Earth in the early 1990s and finally, our return to greatness in the late 90s. Now, with the Infinite Crisis in full swing, my memories of my full history have returned as has our old friend, Kal-L, the first Superman. And Earth II is back as well. So currently, I am on the newly restored Earth II wondering if it is back for good or if the Earths will once again be merged. But even with these twists and turns, nothing could replace the honor of being part of the original superhero team and working alongside such great men as Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, and Kal-L, the one who started it all.

I voted JLA because if you can join anyone, you might as well join the best! Though I'd actually like to be in the post-Legends Giffen/Demathis fun-run (with Booster, Beetle, Guy, Fire & Ice, and the gang). Why? 'Cause it'd be fun! :bounce:

But it was a tough call. I might also like to be in on the current run of the JSA (with Mr. Terrific as leader). There's a lot of history, there.

Or, if I'm feeling a bit dark, the "5 Years Later" arc of the Legion of Superheroes. :eg:

Gotta go with the JSA!

How awesome would it be to fight alongside some of the very first super heroes? To be tutored by the likes of Green Lantern, Hawkman, the Flash and Wildcat. To even have the chance to meet Captain Marvel and his sister Mary... and um... Power Girl! Not to mention learning from some of the greatest minds on the planet: Mr. Terrific and Dr. MidNite.

Unlike the JLA, who tends to be a group of incredible individuals brought together solely to combat forces that no lone superhero could overcome, the Justice Society is a family. From GL to Ma Hunkle, Hawkgirl to Star Girl, its members look out for each other. That's the place I'd want to be.

The most shallow part of me would want to be in Birds of Prey. The nly problem is that being surrounded by thee gorgeous and intelligent women could cause a distraction to my heroics.

The more practical and less hormonally charged side of me goes with the current run of the JSA. It would be great to work side by side with the founding heroes and the next generation of heroes. The JSA has a great sense of legacy, a cool musuem, and the commute to the brownstone is a lot more do-able then going to the moon. Besides, I could go out drinking with Wildcat.

edit: And agreeing with GoldenAge, both Birds of Prey and JSA are much more 'family'-like teams then the JLA.

Legion - either the pre crisis Levitz team, or the current one.

Second choice would be the Teen Titans.

Vanguard00
Jan 26th, '06, 07:52 AM
First choice, Green Lantern Corps.

Second choice, Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League.

Third choice, maybe Outsiders.

I'm too old for both Titans and LSH, otherwise they'd be in the running. JSA would kind of intimidate me, cuz those guys are the originals (mostly). The rest....not so much.

I look at it this way: The LSH era that I would want to be a member of occured at the time when I wasn't too old (if I can have superpower and be a member of a superhero team, than I can also have a retcon).

Heh. Good point. In that case, the Levitz-just-shy-of-Giffen years would be a strong third choice.

1.) The green lantern corps, for the oppourtunity to see the universe and impose the will of cosmic, blue Oompa Loompas

2.) The Legion for the prior reason and to know that we are actually going to make it that far into the future.

3.) The Suicide Squad- cause I'm crazy like that.

I'd have to join the Outsiders, mainly because they get it done and don't face world-ending threats all that often. Society-ending, sure, but not reality-invalidating. That and they live by a Jedi-like code: they won't kill, but they're not above maiming people to get a point across. :eg:

Hmm, maybe I should have picked Suicide Squad.

No challenge here -- I'd join the JSA. Not only do you have some of the most experienced heroes in the world to learn from (Wildcat, GA Flash, GA Green Lantern...), I would also get to talk history with a guy who's lived most of it (Hawkman), serve under what is probably the best superteam leader in the DC-Verse right now, Mister Terriffic, and of course serve alongside Stargirl, Black Canary, and Power Girl. (What? Can't I dream?)

And heck, you might wind up with the Spectre and Captain Marvel on your side. I mean, just how bad could it get wth them around?

That and the sense of loyalty and tradition within the team, as well as "no JSAer ever mindraped their teammates..."

I went with JLA, emphasizing the pre-Crisis version with Firestorm, Red Tornado, and Zatanna in the rotation.

If I were a comic book superhero, the superpower I'd want would be high-end telekinesis on the order of what Jean Grey exhibited at the end of X2. And I think just such a power would be helpful to that team.

Plus, the threats they faced tended to alternate between world-class threats and more mundane stuff.

And I think it would be kind of cool to hang with the above-mentioned individuals, as well as the Superman, Batman, GL, etc., of the day.

(My first inclination, based on those qualifications, would have been to go with the Titans -- but at 44 I'm a bit old.)

I went with the Outsiders because the GLC wasn't an option. It would be great to learn from Dick Greyson and Arsenal, as well as a connection to an old school fave of mine, Black Lightning. Besides the fact that Grace has banged half the DCU (the male half), Thunder seems cool and the android chick is definitely going to cover your *** in a fight. On top of all that, they get paid! The outsiders don't ban together for the greater good so much as take jobs putting criminals away for some of that hard-earned dollar. I like my heros a little bit blue collar and most of this team fits that idea.

Last I remember, the 'android chick' Indigo turned out to be a Brainiac avatar, tried to kill both the Outsiders and Teen Titans, and was killed by Shift. Which is about when I stopped reading the comic.

On top of all that, they get paid! The outsiders don't ban together for the greater good so much as take jobs putting criminals away for some of that hard-earned dollar. I like my heros a little bit blue collar and most of this team fits that idea.

That's the part that I like about them. Not every super is independently wealthy; and if cops and firefighters can reasonably expect to get paid for saving lives while risking their own, why not superheroes?

I'd probably end up in the Global Guardians. :(

By preference, though, I'd go with the pre-Crisis LoSH, joining when I was a teenager, of course. That would have been way cool.

After that I would go with the Giffen era JLI, just for fun. Hmm. That would fit in with having been in the Global Guardians for a while.

Ewww! Or else I might have ended up in the Superfriends! No, I don't need to panic - I would have been in the Global Guardians instead.

OK, so I would have liked to have been in the LSH, but would probably have been in the Global Guardians, and probably eventually the JLI. So how should I vote? LSH? Other? JLE?

I think I might go with the latter, since it would allow me to clearly differentiate my self from the JL of A.

So that's a JLE, via Other.

This was hard, I went with JLA - The Pre-Crisis, with Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lanturn-Hal Jordon, Red Tornado, Firestorm, The Hawks, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Zantana

I'd also like to be a member of the JSA, just the idea of being part of that group, with all that history and experance, you can learn so much. The version would have to be the current one.

LSH because they have the most beautiful women and more of them. Pre-Crisis because that was when they were the best.

Now as for the power's. Time/Space manipulator with natural magic. The DCverse always need a bit more magic and besides it is one of my favorite C's I've played over the years.

All things being what I want them to be, I'd be in the Titans in a heartbeat. Whether that's the current Teen Titans, the post-crisis pre-Titans Hunt New Titans or the early part of the post JLA vs. Titans team, I wouldn't care.

Second runner-up for me would be the classic satellite era JLA, if only to hang out with the big names and the likes of Firestorm, Zatanna and Red Tornado.

Third Runner-up is the Omega Men. I mean, c'mon, a bunch of aliens, I can be as weird and off the wall as I wish and nobody'd blink an eye at me, just think it's 'Some human thing, ignore it'.

"St Barbara" would want to join "Birds Of Prey" because she could provide something that they don't have, the flying energy projector type. Of course, with her powers she's not real good at the sneaking around bit so they might not want her! I almost said "The Titans" thinking of the group when it had "Nightwing", "Troia", "Starfire","Cyborg" and "Changeling". All those hunky guys and beautiful chicks ! Sigh !

I'm all for Infinity, Inc. team from the first story arc.

Yes, they were very cool. They were next on my list.

I particularly enjoyed the friendship between Power Girl and the Huntress. They were a really neat version of the "World's Finest" team.

This had a lot to do with how ticked off I was when they were messed about with during the Crisis.

---

But ultimately, hanging out with the Legion would be more fun, and hanging out with the Global Guardians (and then the JLI) would be more likely, if I was a super in the DCU.

I want to be part of a team that makes a difference on every level of society, from the cosmic to the local. I want to join a team for whom heroism is just part of the job description, a team whose personal problems have never turned them dark for any length of time and who look after one another more like a large family than a superhero team. I want to join the best and brightest, I want to come out into the sunlight.

I want to join the Legion of Superheroes!

What appeals to me in the way of superpowers is a suite of elemental earth-effects, starting out something like Geo Force of the Outsiders and going on from there.

Shape the earth (or ground of whatever world we happened to be on),
Cause landslides, earthquakes, sandstorms...,
Create earthern missiles (or diamond or metal or...),
Summon earth elementals,
Create earthern armor (or stone or clay or...),
Turn flesh into earth (or stone or crystal or uranium ore or...),
Pass through the earth without trace...

A variety of sensory and psychometric/post-cognitive/clairsentient abilities through the earth itself.

Oh, and a LOT of physical toughness and endurance.

Call me -- Terraflux Lass!

I'm always going to have mixed feelings about Crisis. It did wonderful things for some titles (Wonder Woman, Justice League), was sort of a non-thing/minor thing for others (Teen Titans, Batman), and than there are the titles that were just hosed by it. I always felt that it was Infinity, Inc that was hosed the worst. Infinity, Inc. had way too many characters tied to the golden age and particularly the golden aged big three (Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman) that were being written out of continuity. Power Girl and Fury had never recovered when I stopped reading regularly in 2000, but I've heard some things that make me think that things were getting better for them in JSA.

Too old to join the Titans of course and as it stands currently in DCU canon I would probably not fit in well in the JLA. So it would have to be the JSA for me, since the injury and death of thier members are very rare in that group [aside from Zero Hour of course] and as has been mentioned before, they're not prone to mind wiping people.

Plus from a training standpoint, they have the most experience for me to benefit by.

Something I've liked (aside from the Hawkman series from the 80's) is that in every DC RPG supplement I've seen (which really is like 2 or 3, but still), Hawkwoman is the same strength as Batman and Hawkman is the strength level above that. :)

Though, I wouldn't even want to be hit by Hawkwoman, let alone Hawkman. The way she weilds maces is just viscious! (But she's the sexiest redhead I think DC has had.)
