Just to jump on the polling bandwagon...Who is the true master of the mystic arts: Dr. Strange, or Dr. Fate? You decide!

I have to vote for Dr. Strange, just because Dr. Fate has gone through so many permutations, that he is far from the same character he used to be.
Fate is now the revivified Hector Hall, son of Hawkman, and very UNVERSED in the mystic arts. The helmut of Nabu does all the work... and of course was recently overwhelmed by Mordru, so Hector is dead again... or something.
If Fate was still the original Kent Nelson (or even the combined Kent and Inza Nelson) I'd think... with the Helmut of Nabu... they'd have a good shot at taking Dr. Strange...
... as it stands now... Dr. Strange without a fuss... and I haven't read Dr. Strange since the original series ended in the '80s.

Let's remember that Dr. Strange's job is to counter the very entities that are the source of Dr. Fate's powers. I mean, if Dr. Strange can sort out how to win when Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Nightmare, Umar, and Loki are out to get him then I think he can take the Lords of Order and, by implication, Dr. Fate.

I'm sorry. It's not how hard your head is... it's how you use it. I've gotta go with what's familiar to me. Stephen Strange all the way, baby!
(Of course, that assumes that the poll doesn't include Foxbat... One of Foxbat's most recent Master Plans involved stealing the mystical might of Takofanes so that the Mighty Foxbat could put the magical prowess of the great Kal-Turok to good use... making enough Butterball Turkeys to put to nap all of the residents of Wichita, KS... giving Foxbat free reign of the geographic center of the United States... a scary prospect indeed!) :D

Real Magi don't need hood ornaments.
;)
Seriously, I'd give it to Dr. Strange, but then again I am more familiar with him.

You used the word 'master,' as opposed to 'agent' or 'instrument,' so I have to go with Dr. Strange.

I'm going for Dr Strange here. He's got skill and knowledge to go with his power. Besides, he left the Ancient One and did good on his own. Despite liking Dr Fate, I think he's a tool more than a mage. After all, Nabu wore Kent Nelson like a pair of loafers. That's just kinda creepy, just like his origin.
Kent "You killed my dad!" -sob-
Nabu "Oops. Here, I'll teach you how to fly, OK?"
Kent "'Kay!"
later
Nabu "Kent, go into the world and take this helmet with you. I've placed my power into it and will guide you to do good."
Kent "'Kay!"
Kent wears helmet & Nabu possesses him.
Ick.

He's interesting. Kind of a shame Bill Black has him and put him in the Femforce universe.
Last I saw of him he was doing the drunk with power thing after having his fading abilities renewed somehow. :(

I was actually thinking of putting this up myself.
As was pointed out, Fate has gone through multiple incarnations and power levels over the years, and I'm actually not familiar with the current version. At his height when possessed by Nabu, Dr. Fate was a virtual god. But for the most part his battles were with agents of Chaos, who for him were essentially equals and a more or less known quantity.
Dr. Strange is only a man. A man who has beaten gods, and demons, and conceptual entities. He's died and been reborn, passed through Hell, met God and witnessed the creation of the universe, and fought in a thousand-year mystic war. He's beaten countless foes who dwarfed him in power, through his brilliant insights, matchless skill, and iron will. And unlike Fate, Strange has even led his own team (and getting the Hulk to do what you want is no small miracle in itself).
I don't know which Doctor has more sheer power, but it doesn't matter. In any mystic conflict, Strange is just the best there is. (Can you tell he's one of my favorites?)

Fate has awesome raw power, but Strange is so flexible that I have to give it to him. Besides, Hector Hall is a dweeb.

Doc Strange is the man. When it comes to magic, I don't think anyone can touch him.

I know what you mean. That bozo picked up a horde of intriguing characters and if he couldn't use them for cheesecake purposes, they got tossed to the wayside.

Sometimes I sit and wonder what the world would be like if Colt and Nightveil and She-cat were written by Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Kurt Busiek...
and then I remember "All-Hitler Comics - Holocaust 2001" and start hating Bill black all over again.

I can't say I loathe Bill Black.
Sure, he has his little foibles, 'good girl comics', 'The Durango Kid', but he does still put out some of the more consistent archival reprint collections out there.
Ignore Femforce.
Best of the West and Golden Age Classics are where it's at.

Thank Kolker I missed that one! As for the rewrite, I saw Alan Moore turn a sow's ear into a silk purse with some of Leifield's stuff so almost anything is possible, y'know.

Just remember according to Books of magic Doctor Fate's helmet is hanging around at the end of the Universe.

In the Cosmic Odysey (sp?) series, Dr. Fate destroyed an entire dimension with a single spell to keep the anti-life force from directly entering the universe. Now that is raw power.
Still... I gotta go with Dr. Strange on this one. I think if you set the two of them against each other (even when Fate was at his peak) Strange would win by dint of his experience and flexibility.

Experience? Doctor Fate has been around since the 40's, I think he has far more experience and Doctor Strange has often had a major confidence problem, raw numbers are one things but but pysch profiles are what often winds battles.

Well, the name of Dr Fate may have been around since the 40's but Fate himself is Nabu, Lord of Order possessing the body of Kent Nelson. Well, from the 40's to the late 80's that is. Then they decided to work him over and make him all fresh and new. Enter Dr Fate II, Eric Straus. He was this kid who was granted Fate's power and then things got wierd. His stepmother LInda was given the powers, they were revealed to be supposed to merge and form Ultra-Mega-Super-Fate but Darkseid killed Eric and they brought back Kent and Inza (Kent's wife) and gave Inza the powers then claimed they were originally supposed to merge themselves but the Lords of Order are jerks and didn't tell them and then the 90's happened and the Lords of DC called for an update to make Fate 'kewl' after Zero Hour and we got a retard whose use of the magic of Dr Fate was to make the helmet into a knife and stab things. Then they killed him off and reincarnated Hawkman's souless son, Hector as the new Dr Fate and he's still pretty wet behind the ears.
Considering all that, I'd vote for Dr Strange even if he wasn't one of my favorites anyway.

It's what I live for. :D
I have a huge edge on most comics fans. I had a dream job from when I was 15 til when I was 21. I worked in a comics store. Even nowadays, I tend to frequent the local games/comics store for hours on end. Not to mention the vast horde of webpages I've skimmed hunting for the stuff I love or that I've been reading comics since I was like 4-5 yrs old.
Now, if I'd only shown such dedication to my schoolwork...

You definitely have apoint there, i was just thinking of the Nabu aspect of Fate, but he does have to interface with is human host, so right now he's pretty green, I recast my vote for Strange, even though I am a really big Fate (Nabu) fan
Considering all that, I'd vote for Dr Strange even if he wasn't one of my favorites anyway.
