Here's my place holder for Mr. Stark.

Powered armor is going to be easier thanks to Gadgets & Gear, but Tony himself is a bit tougher. I'm thinking an INT between 25-30. His tech skills will be 16- to 18-.
Most of the Technology INT based skills, and some sciences.

I've not read Iron Man much since Bob Layton was the art/writer. What should I know about him?

While brilliant he isn't as smart as Reed Richards as he himself has said. He is definitely a savant when it comes to "nanotransistor tech" though.

He has had some physical training from Cap A, so don't forget to add that in. I'm not sure how you are going to handle all his suits of armor. Just sticking with his newest?

I think I'll just use something approaching "Classic" abilities with current power levels. I have a lot of tech to choose from!

The Main weapons I rememer were:

Repulsors
Unibeam
Freon Tablets
EMP
Electric Beam

Anything else?

RPMiller
Feb 9th, '06, 10:00 PM
Flight obviously
Life support doesn't need to breathe
various sensor arrays
Flood light
Armor of course

I don't recall the freon tablets as being standard, nor the electric beam.

We're sticking with modern Tony right? So no heart problem.

Are you aware of the fact that currently Tony Stark is the Iron Man armor?

The computer is wired directly into his brain and the armor is stored in his body via nano technology...

He's also got sonic attacks, and he's with decent regularity detatched parts of his armour to attatch to people to drain energy from them (he's done it to the Surfer and others, though the Surfer was basically sitting on his *** and whining while Tony went to do it).

Defense wise.. he's got stuff like anti telepathic defenses, anti magnetism defenses, and various other stuff.

I'd recommend int 30, since Reed would be like 40. And Tony is notably above most of his fellow comic book geniuses like Hank Pym and Dane Whitman (Dane is a bonafide inventive genius across multiple fields damnit!), but still the specific inferior of Reed Richards and Doctor Doom, who are among the smartest guys in their entire multiverse.

Oh, and you'll want something for his ocassionally trotted out "I channel all the power of my armour into a single mighty blow!" which sometimes will KTFO the Hulk, and sometimes bounce off the Silver Surfer's face (though admittedly the Surfer's more durable). And sometimes completely shut down his armour for trying it.

And give him options for area effect attacks, he does those a fair bit.

And um.. *thinks* the armour has stood up to violent re-entry, so it's likely quite buff, defense wise.

I would also have a high variability on his STR. I seem to recall he often "pumps all his power into a single push" and really juices up his power level. Maybe an extended Push, or even an Aid to any of his powers with extra END + some kind of Burnout on the Aided power.

Some flavor of END Reserve, of course.

Didn't he used to magnetize objects in the early days?

IMO, from what I've seen of the post-Layton/Micheline Iron Man, you really haven't missed much worthwhile. Stick with "classic", pre-nano, pre-public ID, pre-Sec of Defense Iron Man.

So when he's armored up, where do you guys place Iron Man's physical enhancements? the old Marvel Game typically gave him what I'd term a 50 Str. His Con/Body and defenses were enhanced with almost every new suit, and he could override the saftey measures to pump his STR or EB up but damaged the suit while doing this... sound right?

austenandrews
Feb 10th, '06, 02:48 PM
When I used to read the Avengers, I never got the impression that he was drastically lower in STR than the other big hitters, like Wonder Man or the Vision. If Thor has 115 STR, 50 sounds way too low for Iron Man. Maybe 75 or so. His usual M.O. was a repulsor blast or two, invariable followed by lots of fisticuffs.

He's also often had something called "pulse bolts." Basically, an energy attack that does more damage the farther away the target is.

Also, I think magnetic manipulation is a common feature ( stuff like magnetizing metals, crude physical manipulation, that kind of thing ).

You could make a good argument for Tony Stark having only one power: a VPP usable only for building multiforms. But, too ugly to be really feasible or meaningful.

yeah, I am going to give him a "Basic" Armor set up and a big VPP to represent reconfigurations and other Armors.

The way I always read IM was that he had a main schtick that tended to be the focus of the suit. As he upgraded the suit (or the writers changed) the suit would gain a new set of abilites that would be the focus of the armor. In general, the suit always kept the old abilites but Tony didn't use them as much.

- The old Grey/Gold buky armor: Reverse Magnatism (A TK vs metal)
- Early Red & Gold: Good Flight, gimmick of the week
- "Classic" Red & Gold w/waist pods: Energy absorbtion and redirection
- Silver & Red: Invisibility & Pulse Bolts
- "Super Slim" Post Iron Wars: EMP Pulse
- Modular Armor: A return to gimmick of the week

Then you get into special setups like War Machine, The Telepresence Suit, and Deep Space or Hydroarmor.

A few other observations:

-IMHO Repulsers are EBs vs PD, and sometimes act like they have Double KB. Pulse Bolts are RKAs vs ED and have increased stun multiples that only kick in at long range.

-I have long maintained that Tony Stark is Manic Depressive. He may not be a classic medical case, but it is as close as comics get.
In some issues he is unsure that anything he has done means anything and contemplates giving up his company and the armor.
Three issues later he is on top of the world who can do no wrong, all his problems are a redesign away from being fixed, and he busts Rhino just cause before he goes out with his hot Girlfriend of the week.
I know this has alot to do with changes in writers, but it has been a very prominent part of his character for many years. Much more so than most heros (Except maybe Hank Pym)
FWIW: Manic Depressives are often alchaholic in an attempt to self-medicate

-IM has *a lot* of the exotic defences. The armor has resisted Find Weakness attacks, it is specifically designed (since the mid Waist-pod era) to prevent outside control or override, shrugs off Flashes with ease, and on and on

“The elements that make a good Iron Man story are the conflicts that create change in Tony Stark.

checkout the Disads and the contacts, I know I need more.
Also, I'm thinking his training with Cap will result in some combat levels, not actual martial arts maneuvers. Is this a gross miscalculation?

The original Tony Stark was not in the military. He was in Vietnam during the war inspecting special weaponry that he'd helped invent and that's how he was captured by the Vietcong. The problem with maintaining this origin is that, at best, it puts him in his mid-50's or so...and that's REALLY being generous.

Archon
Feb 12th, '06, 01:19 PM
Over the years Tony has been an adviser in Korea, Vietnam, South East Asia, and lately Afghanistan. AFAIK, his present story is he was advising in Afghanistan when he was wounded by a mine.

Unlike DC, Marvel just adjusts his history rather than rebooting him.

Jhamin

Well, they did do a partial reboot as part of the "Heros Reborn" storyline.

As far as I understand the current continuity,

- Original Tony died in Antartica after shrugging off Kang's mind control.
- Teenage Tony from an alternate timeline died/was shunted away fighting Onslaught (And no matter how lame teen Tony may have been, he did take Dr. Doom with him)
- Heroes Reborn Tony existed in Franklin Richards "pocket dimension of the fanboy".

- Current, mainstream Tony is an amagamation of all three of these that was created when the Heros Reborn world ended and they were folded into the mainstream universe. There were even panels of him all googly eyed saying "My god, I remember all three lives!".

So I think he was in fact a consultant in Vietnam, The First Gulf War, and Afghanistan.
Try not to think too hard about that.

Okay, we're going to ignore much of his history. Another thing that his life doesn't really account for is that technology has advanced so much since his original inception. True, he's still supertech, but does the original armor still seem worthwhile if he made it in the 21st century?

Considering that the big buzzword for his armor was that it consisted of (gasp) 'transistor' technology back in the '60s I would say...not.

Actually, It is almost as amazing now as it was then. The suit can stop all small arms fire without even letting a bruise through to the wearer, allows him to throw cars, and he can fly as fast as a Jetfighter.

That would be every bit as amazing now as it was then.

Okay, after a too long hiatus, I'm looking at this again. Remember, I am going for a "Generic" suit for IronMan.

Here's my Quandry.

I've decided to go OIHID (Only in Heroic Identity) for his armor rather than OIF...because, the points don't matter to me, and Ironman rarely seems to have complications with his armor unless the plot calls for it.

My current quandry is one of powersupplys and figured characteristics.
If anyone ever deserved figured CHA from his armor, it's Tony, he is the standard bearer for Powered Armor chracters. His armor is more sophisticated than anyone else in the MU including Dr. Doom (In my opinion)

So if I use figured cha right now his END is 100 rec 22. Should I:
a) simply slap some more end on him (OIHID) and/or give him a back up battery (End Reserve).

b) Give him a big reserve and use the enhanced "personal end" as the back up.

c) Make his stats no Figured CHA and give him multiple END reseves

His defenses at this time include Armor, a small FF, and Protected Senses (Sight, Hearing, Radio). Has Tony ever claimed to have Anti Psionic Technology? Anti Magic Tech? (Power Defense). I could See Lack of Weakness for resistant defenses easily. I don't know if I'll do Damage Reduction for Ironman, if I do it will be considerably less than I gave Thor. perhaps 25%.

I'd give him a huge whopping CON while in the armor and maybe skip the damage reduction. That boosts his Rec, Stun and END up to where they should be (he can take a punch from the Hulk and be back up after his post phase 12 recovery).

On the other hand, my Tank Guy version of Iron Man relied completely on Damage Reduction.

The +50 STR is when he overrides the safety protocals on his armor for Physical Strength.

How is being a technophile a disadvantage worth points? It's not like he'll refrain from demolishing Ultron because he's such a unique technology.

How is being a technophile a disadvantage worth points? It's not like he'll refrain from demolishing Ultron because he's such a unique technology.I think there have been times where he has hesitated dangerously long at encountering trully new and unique technology because he was so enamored by it. Thus warranting a disadvantage (privided it is played correctly)

BTW, I think you either should shave his INT down a few points or better peg Dr. Doom and Reed Richards at INT 40. IMO Stark is NOT as smart or mentally capable as Doom or Richards toe to toe. Though, he is close: INT 25 or 28 would be my benchmark, if you restrict Doom and Richards to human maximums of 30. Though, I've seen mention that some of Richards current overwhelming brilliance comes from his bodies maleability and gives his brain levels of flexibility that a mundane human could never possess, thus enhancing his ability to think/theorize/problem solve.

TB

PS You should do the FF after the Avengers :D

FF I'll probably get to but as you can see my attention ebbs and flows ;)

Yeah, I got Reed and Vic at at leat 35 (it's not like Albert Zerstoiten has anything on them) :)

Has Tony ever "had trouble" with the concept of Magic? - Just curious.

technophile is a disadvantage because it can get him into trouble
you can distract him with interesting technical problems get him to a particular location with a challenge etc

Has Tony ever "had trouble" with the concept of Magic? - Just curious. Not more than anyone else who isn't in to the whole magic thing.

I wouldn't give him any special defenses against magic, but I wouldn't give him any special susceptibilities to it either.

Umm... I really don't think you should be posting that. :tsk:

Erm...why not?

I'm not disagreeing with you (and apparently the moderators didn't disagree, either) -- but I'm just confused. I found that file from a link here on the boards, and figured it was kosher (since no one said anything on the other thread, one dedicated wholly to that web site). I figured it was some sort of free download or public domain or something.

Sorry if it was against forum rules or something, I just thought it might come in handy for Enforcer and his Iron Man project. I didn't mean to be busting some rule or anything.

I'm a bit surprised that you would think that. That is a published book that someone or somepersons spent many hours and dollars creating in the hopes to earn back the money spent and hopefully make some profit on. That is so incredibly obvious that I'm floored you would think it was free.

There is far to much thievery of rpg material on the web these days all thanks to the pdf format. Just because something can be posted on the internet doesn't mean it should be posted on the internet. The person that has that linked on their site could easily be prosecuted for putting that up there without the permission of the publisher. (BTW, if they have permission than I retract everything I'm saying, but I doubt that is the case.)

Anyway, thank you very much for taking it down. It saves Hero Games from any legal action and that means we don't end up having to suffer. I also understand that your intent was to help and I commend that, but remember my words above, and when you see stuff like that on the web you should report it to try to put an end to it.

BTW, the companies that I do work for have many pdfs available, and they are quite clear about which ones are free and which ones cost. For every thief that steals a pdf that I helped to create, I lose money. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate it if it happened to you either, and as such can hopefully understand why this was a concern to me.

Sorry for the derailment there Enforcer. I'm done now. :D

when this thread started, I posted a brief summary of powers for the suits taken from a previously published book, it amounted to a total of less than a page, but was that too much information to avoid violating copyrights?

if folks feel I posted too much, I will pull it

thats why I only posted the rough lists of powers and not any values etc

I post quite a bit of Traveller/Traveller oriented material, but I am posting the traveller material within set guidelines obtained from author and copyright holder

and even then I at least try and be careful what I am posting

course with traveller having gone through 5 seperate editions, and 4 different publishers for the main books alone, its hard to keep track of who held what and who to ask for permission

heres an interesting question on the subject of copyrights, say you have an out of print gaming system you want to convert etc... what if you cant find a contact for said company to get permission? are there any resources for finding out such information?

The rpg publishers community is a pretty tight bunch that tends to stay in contact and knows people that know people if you know what I mean. ;) Usually asking any "big" publisher to contact other publishers for you will work.

Not more than anyone else who isn't in to the whole magic thing.

I wouldn't give him any special defenses against magic, but I wouldn't give him any special susceptibilities to it either.

TB

He doesn't deny its existance but he hates magic because he doesn't understand it and it violates certain physical laws. He basically sees magic as a type of science that he doesn't understand.

From what I have been able to understand about this topic is that in the marvel universe magic requires that a person put their reason aside and accept that there are higher powers in the universe that need to be called upon. Science is based on reasoning out the universe and gaining from that reasoning.

Hi, Anyone out there got an Ironman.hdc I can use?
I'm a GM with a NEW on-liine player who wants to be IRON MAN.
He's new to the system and I'm pushed for time.
I have a registered version3 of Hero Designer.
Thanks in advance.
:)

I've got the initial stab posted above as a starting point but with the hdc I can tweak it.

Well, as you can see Iron Man clocks in at around 1000 pts. Unless you're running a non-standard campaign that probably won't be a starting character.

Your best bet would be to start with Defender, and tweak him a little bit, change around some of the disadvantages and a few powers. The Champions team in Champions are specifically designed as good starter characters and examplars of their type.

So, do I need a combat computer?

Depends on what you want it to do. Certainly a level or two based on a combat analysis computer is reasonable.

But what you really need to give him is seduction. Tony's always been a ladies man. ;)

yea, in the "combined Thread" I think I posted hdc files for everyone. Look in the Marvel/DC link in my signature.

Old Thor in Avengers was only about a 60 STR so was the Hulk up and until the mid to late 80's. Hulk was listed as weighing 1000 lbs and being able to lift 200 times as much (at a calm). At the time Toney could lift 75 tonnes in the Iron man armor. Keep in mind a metric ton is 200 lbs more then a tonne in lbs. Starks armor now can lift 80 tonnes that's it. Depending on the suit this would sometimes be 90 tonnes, but we're looking at a STR of 58 realistically. Stark relies on his repolser blasts mostly anyway.

Today I just don't know for sure. Last I checked during the world war Hulk saga there was a quote that might indicate Hulks current STR. She-Hulk demonstrated her STR by punching the concrete, which left a big crater. She then said "the Hulk is capable of 1000 times this force". She Hulk is still written as capable of lifting 100 tonnes. That would put Hulks STR at 110 roughly by champions standards. Thor's been given an equal boost and I'd currently place his STR at 100 likely not on par with Hulk anymore but close. He has class seven STR which currently means beyond 400 tonnes

No way Toney's armor is that powerfull even with extremeous tech.

The Hulk is capable of lifting millions of real world tons, this was average every day Hulk during the Secret Wars saga when he held an entire mountain on his shoulders. The WW Hulk is several orders of magnitude more powerful, we are probably talking billions of tons here.

You don't have to name the conflict. You can always just refer to him as a tech consultant for the military who has frequently been over-seas in combat zones checking actual field results. i.e., most recent, recognizable, conflict. Sad that history makes that as convenient as it does, but there it is. This is a problem with a lot of Marvel heroes.

Not this argument again. I just read the issue you're referring 3 weeks ago just to confirm what I already new. The Hulk at the time had retained a portion of Bruce's intellect and could rationalize coherently. Hulk stated that he was not lifting up millions of tonnes but merely bracing the mountain with his leverage. Read the comic and you'll see how small the hole they were in was relative to the entire mountain. He was in no way bearing the brunt of any more then the tiniest fraction of the mountains weight. He says as much himself.

In physics there are different kinds of force, and you are grossly simplifying things by coming to the above conclusion.

By your argument a small concrete pillar in a parking garage can bear the weight of an entire 40 story building. That has to be 1000nds of ktons yet I can wreck the pillar by driving my car into it at full speed. That must mean that my car is exerting 1000nds of ktons of force. That sounds like Palladium Hero's Unlimited logic to me. Keep in mind the pillar (in this case Hulk) is only supporting a fraction of the overall weight of the object.

There are several issues were they state exactly what Hulk can lift. I read an issue from 1985 that said exactly how much. Of course as I stated before many of Mavel's hero's have been powered up. It may be difficult if not impossible to pin a certain number on Hulk's STR as it is now. My attempt was merely an educated guess

I don't have an issue with the hulk lifting a mountain as much as I do the mountain surviving the experience without coming apart. ;)

Again he didn't lift the mountain. He was bracing the small upper peak of the mountain in a tiny hole he was wegged in with some other heros. It was very realistic given the realm of superhero physics.

There are physics in Marvel/DC comics?
It's a sign of the apocalypse!

Doesn't matter - do you know much about geology and mountain formation; or just basic physics? It would have broken apart above him leverage or no. Just like an aircraft carrier would end up with a hole punched in the bottom where he was standing if he tried to pick it up. There's nothing "realistic" about super-hero physics. In fact the phrase "it was very realistic given the realm of super-hero physics" boggles the mind. The leverage reference was a skimpy fig-leaf for bold-faced fantasy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Lets pretend for a moment were talking about a bat cave. In this case it's a small one. For whatever reason the caves become unstable due to a fissure. The only thing holding the cave together is a small column of stone. The cave is already being held together, it's just unstable. A bad jostle to the support may cause a cave in. It not to say the the top bottom and sides of this structure are being held together by this lowly piece of stone. The stone is just bracing

Yes I do realize there is a leap of faith one has to make when reading comics but there is no indication that the Hulk is lifting the whole mountain. It does not take a University physics professor to realize this. The comic even states he's not, so how can you even argue this point?

Aren't we off track from the post. Something about Iron can't remember.
