View Full Version : Freebie Advice

I'm working on a freebie that I thought would be useful but would like some feedback. What I'm doing is going through every spell in Valdorian Age and categorizing them based on appropriateness. I am also categorizing them into what type of magic they are appropriate. In some cases, I'm considering adding notes for how to change the spell to make it appropriate for the Genre. For example, Vashtori's Third Spell of Monster Calling will indicate that you need to change Expanded Class(monster) to Kraken, add arrives on own power.
My Crued List of Categories:
Yes
No
Requires GM Approval
Use Summon Supernatural Creature
Use KS: Sorcery
What I'd like to know is what level of detail would DOJ or others want on this list? Obviously I won't be reproducing the spells. Also, how picky should I be on letting spells through? As an example here, I view Lightning Bolt on page 66 as a no but I could see some GM's granting approval.
And finally, does this sound like something useful for to add to the free stuff page?

Well, since you're creating it for your own use, I think you should create it to whatever level of detail you want. If other people want more (or less), they can tweak it to suit themselves. I think you'll probably include most of the information the average gamer needs.
Personally, I'd suggest getting pretty picky, since most TA spells aren't really appropriate for a VA type game. But ultimately you're creating it so your judgment should control.
Let us know when it's done and we'll see about posting it on the Free Stuff page. ;)

You mean you're going through the Fantasy Grimoire and checking spells for viability in Valdorian Age, right, hon?
(That part's a little unclear.)

Will do. The book is pretty massive and I've only managed to get to page 75 in notes. I expect it to be a while though before I get to that stage. :)

It would be neat if you could take the limited Grimoire in VA and delineate the permutations that each spell went through dating back to the TA. Now, that's assuming that each of the VA spells has a TA counterpart (they should... it's like science, the 'modern' spells should be ultimately and historically linked to a predecessor). For whatever reason, the VA spells survived -- more or less intact while the others got lost. It would make a worthwhile VA campaign to go after such information, searching the libraries of the world as well as the more mystic-oriented people, in order to document the histories (and gain the spell knowledge) IMO.

I wouldn't necessarily find that as useful as maybe a simple PDF that is a limited Grimoire of spells from FHG and FHG II that exist in Valdorian Age. It could add in a section for new summons and it might be a pretty decent product.

Done with the note taking process. It filled something like 16 pages of notes. It occurs to me, however, I'm not sure what format to provide the freebie. I only had a free trial of Microsoft Office though I do own a full copy of Wordperfect. If I was to type up the information in Word Perfect, could someone at Hero Games convert it to a PDF usable for others?
I think my favorite approved spell is Parting the Water. Very appropriate for a Supernatural Creature to be able to do such a task. But as all spells cost END we are looking at 16 END per Phase and requires a very powerful Sorcerer to use the massive 162 Active Point power.

If you can get it to me as a Word Doc I can convert it to a PDF for you.

Sure, I can make PDFs from WP no problem.

Open Office Suite is a free office suite that is capable of importing Word Doc files and also publishing PDF files.

And is a keen application in it's own right.

And not just publishing PDFs... I played with it last night and the interface to produce a PDF was much smoother than the adobe PDF plugin for Word. Just a simple click on a single icon and BAM!

I use Open Office as well. I have Word for the heavy writing stuff, but Open Office has a spreadsheet, drawing, presentation slides, etc. Stuff I don't use all the time but handy to have around.
