Until recently I'd stick with gurps and assumed hero was just a 'comic book game', but now an beginning to suspect my opinion was ill formed and ill informed.
Still, I can say from experience that hero does suffer from an image problem that keep it viewed as a 'comic book' game by many people.
As a writer, inventor and designer among many other things, I'd like to help out with this.
I've written and designed a graphic ad for hero that might help convince some people it's not just a superhero system. You'll need a bit of imagination to see what I'm talking about, but here's the layout for what I call "The HERO Challenge" type ad.
Image: A cement wall with a jagged, violent hole near the top. Above the hole is written, in grafitti style, the word "The"
A left fist, a real, human left fist, violently clenched, is sticking thru the hole as if it just punched it thru the wall. The fist has to be a left one, and should look large, slightly dirty, sweaty, maybe with a suggestion of slightly scraped knuckles as if it has just punched a hole in a wall. The fingers have the word HERO written on them in crude, tattoo type letters.
Under the fist the word "Challenge" is scrawled. So we get a very violent, forceful image spelling out "The HERO challenge"
Under it we have a text that reads something like:
"For over 20 years people have been claiming that the hero system is just for comic book role playing.
People who say that are either ignorant or have a reason to want you not to find out the truth about HERO.
The truth is that HERO can handle any genre and any kind of character. From space opera to medival, from cyberpunk to horror, from post apocalypse to covert action, HERO can do it all, and do it better than any other system, period.
HERO can model any disadvantage, any advantage, any skill, any weapon or vehicle you need for any setting.
But a lot of people still fall for the line that HERO's just for comics.
That's why we're issuing the HERO challenge: Compare HERO to any other universal role playing rules for any genre and see for yourself that HERO does more than just comics.

Companies making other game systems don't want you to know the truth about HERO, that's why they've been calling it a comic system for 20 years. Are you going to let them tell you what to think or are you going to take the HERO challenge and find out what they don't want you to know?"
Befoe you run an ad like this, you need to redo some of the graphics that feature way too many superhero type characters, of course. But I think a stark, graphic ad like that could help break the image of hero as just for comics.
