I always liked the Dragon Lance's Conclave of mages, so I decided my world would have a similar group, as I explored the idea I decided that there would be 2 groups that control mages

All mages will belong to both an order and a school of magic.

The first and more powerful group is the Council of Mages, 7 mages of extreme power, each appointed by there order or there school

The three orders are White, Grey, & black, all are about the purpose of magic (Selfless, Academic, Selfish)

The schools are divided etc, following posts willl be about each one, but here is the organisation Table

Conclave of Magic

Master of Wizardry
• Captain of the guard
• Headmaster of Schools

Master of the White

Master of the Grey

Master of the Black

Master of Arts
• Master of Divination
• Master of Necromancy
• Master of Illusions
• Master of Enchantments
• Master of Sorcery

Master Crafter
• Master of Scrolls
• Master of Potions
• Master of Smiths

Master of the Elements
• Master of Fire
• Master of Water
• Master of Earth
• Master of Air

The Master of Wizardry is the head of the wizard's council, he is considered the most powerful/wise mage in the world. He is the head of both the wizard's council and conclave

He has two groups he represents to the council

The Captain of the Guard, The Captain represents the military use of magic, he is also responcible for the defence of conclaive sights (such as magic schools, Towers of High Sorcery, Etc...). Mages that follow this school are often called Spell-Swords.

The Headmaster of Schools is responsible for the teaching of magic and the testing of mages

The next three are the head of the Order's of Magic

White: The Whites beleive that Magic is to be used to improve the world around them, healing the injured, feeding the hungrey, etc...

Grey: The Grey's beleive that magic is a tool, that it should be explored to expand the limits of what it can do, and shared with all who wish to know of it

Black: The Black's beleive that magic should be for personal gain, be it power, money, or ego stroking

I think Black should have a better descriptor than "selfish." Even the most egocentric industries/people fluff their aims with "frilly words." How about black being the "highest degree of the mastery of practical magic achievable by man." 100% egocentric, 100% selfish, and 100% believable (IMO).
