I seem to be having some serious performance issues with a ship that I am building. I don't know if it is considered masive in hero designer or not so i am going to try to post my log file as well as the character. What seems to be happpening is that HD is maxing out my cpu, which is a 1.16 GHZ, i also have 512 MB of ram running windows XP. Here is the log file.

One other weird issue I am having is that I create a multipower with 2 ranged killing attacks, these are ships weapons.
I save the multipowers as prefabs. After I have added one of the weapons to the ship I double click on the RKA and there is a drop down menu for Personal End or Uses End Reserve. That drop down box doesn't show up when I am in the Powers tab of the character I used to generate the prefab, but it does appear on the starship character i am adding the prefabed weapon to. It is kind of odd.

Because you have an END Reserve on the starship character that you're adding the weapon to.

What happens if you simply restart HD? That character behaves just fine when I load it in.

Yeah that happens for me it works fine. If I ever have a second character up then I think that is when the performance hit happens. But it continues even after I have closed all characters. THe example would be I was messing around with the weapons to see if I could figure out why the drop down was appearing. So I have the lasers character up as well as the ship up in hero designer.I may have had a prefab loaded at the time as well, I don't remember.
So the only way for me to get the personal or end reserve drop down to appear in my prefab is to have an endurance reserve in the prefab or have to go into each weapoin and set the endurance reserve to End reserve?
Attached is the second file I had open. Itr must be the two files that cause the problem. I will hav eto remember to close stuff up instead of trying to flip back and forth.

The selection of END Source is not something which I would recommend including on a Prefab, as it will only display/be available if the character that the prefab is assigned to has an END Reserve....that's something which is normally best defined on the final character.
As for the performance, I'm still not having an issue, even with the lasers character open.
That said, I am currently in the final stages of a complete revamp of the way the ability tabs display/function for v2. V2 will feature a much leaner (and faster) operation which should allow folks to work on large (or extremely large) characters with little to no slowdown.
I've finished the main source of optimization and re-coding for the UI...but I still have a large amount of work yet to go in the background calculations and operations. Even with only the UI revamped, I'm seeing a HUGE improvement in the performance. Moving items around in Dr. Destroyer's skill list has very little delay now (less than a second per move) and the scrolling works much better (following the currently selected ability).
Long story short (too late): you should see substantial improvements in the performance for v2.

Cool. If you aren't seeing a performance problem then it is probably something with my machine. And hopefully will disapear when i buy a new machine some time in the future.
I will be looking forward to the new and improved verion whenever you get it done.

Prefab Problems
Not sure if this is known bug or not. But when I load up a prefab I am having text for part of the prefabs disappear, this will change depending on which items int he prefab i select and add. Also when I add a multipower sometimes the powers listed in the multipower are atached to the cahracter but outside the multipower but in a list format with negative numbers.
With the laser character I made a prefab and added a twin laser cannon to a ship right after I created a custom power called 2 medium Ion cannons. What happened is the twin lasr cannon multipower was placed after the 4 powers. the 4 powers were listed -4) -3) -2) -1). I then have to move the powers back into the multipower.

Please post the prefabs that you are using and the exact steps you take to cause the problem to occur.

OK will do as I work them out. It is happening on multiple prefabs I am using. One other thing to note. The examples for knowledge skills don't seem to be working the way I woudl expect them to. When I add an example to the template ad select any of the types of knowleges, groups, people, place, things. THe example drop down shows blank at first. I woudl expect that the examples woudl be loaded and the first one in alphabetical order woudl appear. I am ok with this because all I have to do is just drop down and the examples appear. The problem comes when I open up a knowledge skill the second time. The second time I open the knowledge skill with the custom example instead of listing the selected custom example it lists the first example in the list of examples. I.E. I have a list of things. Hyperdrives, Ion drive, and shields.
If I select shields when I add the knowledge skill to a character it shows up perfect under the skills. when i double click to open the knowledge skill again, in most cases I forgot to set the skill to int based, the example no longer shows shields but instead says Hyperdrive. When I click ok the skill shown in the skills list for the character is Hyper drive int based. So each time I open the knowledge skill I have to reselect the example.
I will write down the steps I am taking to get the disapearing prefab information for you right now.
Thanks for all the help I am sorry that I am bringing so much stuff to the table all at once but I just started really hammering npc's for my game out today and was just noticing things.

Start by closing all characters in hero designer, unload all prefabs. Close hero designer.
Restart hero designer 1.44 from a link on my quick launch bar under windows XP. Open programs at the time are Volume, Safely Remove hardware, On Ac Power, Synaptic touch Pad, Symantec Corporate Edition Anti-virus, Nokia Conneciton Manager, and Microsoft word to type this up.
I do File > New Character.
File> Set Template> Choose File> hero.hdt (a custom template)
Load prefab > select mrlssti.hdp
Go to tab powers, select prefab tab
Double click the mrlssti folder, which closes and adds the powers to the character.
I then reopen the mrlssti folder and -4 strength disappears.
below is the zip of the files I worked with. There is hero.hdt, the custom template, mrlssti.hdp the prefab, and mrlssti.hdc the character for the prefab incase I am messing something up.

I'm not seeing any problem.
When I start a new character with the hero.hdt template that you provided, load in the prefab "mrlssti.hdp" and double click on the "mrlssti" folder on the prefab tab of the powers screen, HD places the "mrlssti" list into the character, with the 8 items that are part of the list.
This is exactly as it should be.
The items that are added into the character are the list and all of it's contents.

Then if you open the mrlssti folder under the prefab tab the -4 str text will disappear.
There will be a dot but no text saying -4 str.
attached is a screen dump of HD witht he missing text in the prefab tab on the left.
When I created that picture all i did was file new cahracter load mrlssti prefab and then double clicked on the folder. It opened up with the text for -4 str missing.

Nothing of the sort is happening when I try it.

I was wonderiung what your video processor was Dsimon? And how much memory you have on it.
I have a 16 mb video card and i am wondering if that might be the reason that certain things are disappearing when i load prefabs. It doesn't seem all that logical but maybe the java video drivers are using a lot of memory and I am just dropping stuff. I know this happens in video games when i don't have enough memory to store information.
