View Full Version : What's your team missing?

A question of curiosity, for those of you in team games. Whether in terms of archetypes ("Where's our brick?"), personalities ("Who's the straight man?") or skills ("Where's our scientist?"), what's your team lacking?
War Wolf's team lacks a mentalist and an infiltrator. The lack of mentalist can be dealt with, but we recently came into a situation where the ability to infiltrate would be REAL nice ... but we can't. Flux can turn invisible, but can't see where he's going while he's doing it. WW can shapeshift into a human appearance, but doesn't have the interpersonal skills required to bluff his way around easily. Also lacks Lockpicking and Security Systems and Stealth and Concealment ...
Yeah, this ain't gonna be pretty.

My Hell's Gate Open game lacks..hm..a wheelman mostly. And a hacker. There are several combat monsters. One dedicated witch. A thief. There's no real tough guy brawler type. Everyone prefers to use weapons.

Mostly all the teams I am part of have what we need. If anything that would be nice in one or two, is not to have so many C's that have so much mental bagage. But....then again it is fun to play out the non-super bits. I like the RP of the 'person' that is the hero, not the 'hero' is the person.

The only thing I can think that our team is missing is....
restraint.

My main group lacks a true Speedster. It makes me sad :(
We don't have a weapon master, patriot, or power armor user either but none of those are really missed due to the tone of the setting. The flying blaster is kinda like a power armor user however, since most of his powers are derived from the Mystical Egyptian artifacts he wares.
Personality wise, we got a prettey decent blend for such a small team. Probably because my character contributtes three ;)

What kind of restraint ghost-angel. Moral or Physical?

yes. I'm not sure it's a Bad thing given the game, but we certainly lack it.

Nothing. The team's resident munchkin can do everything the team needs done, and that includes everything the specialists on the team can do; in fact, he does it better than us. Sometimes he just goes off to take care of the latest world-threatening crisis by himself, and the rest of us stay at home to play parcheesi.
Oh, wait, this wasn't the Munchkin thread? :o

I can realate to that. In the first team I played in, my MA was the only one that keep everything to himself, he didn't let anyone in on he's plans. The rest...well they were impulsive, except for our mentalist, he just listened and waited for the f****s hit the rotary ossalator, then he'd have to clean it up.

You guys are lucky. My team (i am not the leader) lacks money. Its hard to fight crime on low funding. We need one of those power armored hero/millionaires to finance E-Force.

Let's see. In the game I'm running, they're lacking
People who are actually good at the non-lethal take-downs.
Someone who understands some of the mystical stuff.
A Mentalist whose player doesn't always end up having to work when the game is scheduled (not his fault, I know).
Some means of stopping the brick from wandering away from the area of the next combat. (He's participated in one fight, and that was against gangers, and he arrived right at the end, just in time to miss one of the gangers.)
A group vehicle
A group baseIn the game I'm playing in (using the Specter), we're missing.
Team Cohesion: Everyone is just going their own way and I have my work cut out for me if I'm going to correct it.
A Mentalist.
A Gadgeteer, or a Scientist, or a Powered Armor, just someone who understands the high-tech stuff.
Some Team-members that are actually into the whole, "there's a problem, it's in our neck of the woods, we have the ability to stop it, so let's go stop it" idea. Between the EGO maniac flying blaster/semi-brick/mystic, the chaos-magnet/sorceress/shrinking violet, the giant-spider-summoning-Gnoll-conjurer who is an attention whore and the "I'm just trying to find my place in the world right now" obvious-mutate Brick, I may just shoot myself and get it over with.

A leader
No fooling. The guy who plays our leader decided he wanted to try another character. Then the GM decides it's time to throw a world threatening alien invasion at us. Great timing "Simon Talbut: the Man of Light!"

Our group is a GM and 2 players. :(

One of the groups I'm a player in could really use a Detective PC. Me, I suck at mysteries so no thank ye.

Amen to that ... in the game that I run, there are some issues with leadership. I have players who have the ability, but not the desire and visa versa ... I remember the days when I had some solid leadership types in the group ;)

Oddly enough cohesion is one of the things our team excels at. when push comes to shove we're a frighteningly effective team.

Agreed.
The only thing my team lacks is players... I don't have any.:(
Since moving to Chicago I've been lucky enough to play, off and on, in a Pulp game (run by a great guy = Barton on these boards). But I don't have anyone to play a Super Hero game with.
Anyone want to start a game in the Western suburbs??? (Naperville - It's only a half hour to O'Hare) I'll even GM.
Sigh, I feel like I'm close to begging...

Five PCs in the game I'm playing, and six PCs in the one I'm running. Actually, other than my ninja hero game, every game I'm in has a minimum of four players, and I just left a 7 player Deadlands: Lost Colony game. Pretty much par-for-the-course "down under." ("Down Under!" And people wonder why we had a serving Pime Minister that referred to this country as "the ar$e-end of the world.")

'Bout the only time we get this is when they're playing the bad guys ... as heroes, they have some team problems ... as villains, they're incredibly effective ;)

'Bout the only time we get this is when they're playing the bad guys ... as heroes, they have some team problems ... as villains, they're incredibly effective ;)When morals and law don't interfere, it's easy to mesh into a one-minded machine of Entropy. At that point you're working WITH nature. That's why being a Hero is so darn difficult... It's unnatural.

I think that hits the nail on the head. We're not "villains" in the take over the world sense, but we certainly are not a group of "good guys."
We each have our own reasons for saving the planet and in most cases the means do in fact justify the ends. Though... we've sort of agreed not to suck the souls out of innocent children and serve them up as dessert anymore.

My group has a brick (who is like Supergirl, so she can be really fast if needed), a martial artist, an investigator, a mage (with some stealthy spells and abilities, plus can read peoples' surface thoughts), and another brick.
I suppose I may need a proper mentalist, but they tend to destroy my plots...
A true speedster would be nice, sometimes. I have no true gadgetteer or super-tech guy, either.

The Defenders 2 Bricks, Mystic, Gadgeteer, Metamorph MA/Detective & Speedster (NPC.) The Gadgeteer has some Energy Projector capabilities, as does the mystic, but there's no one character whose major schtick is Heavy Artillery. No Mentalist either.
Guardians of Millenium City Energy Projector, Brick, Metamorph & whatever Jo-El decides to make ( I think he's currently up in the air between a Mentalist/Detective and a Super-intelligent Gorilla Martial Artist.) Either way, no Speedster.
No Weaponmasters, Flagsuits or Powered Armors in either of the groups I'm in.

Common sence and a vacation.:eg:
Most of the teams we have at least one character can cover any power out there. But sometimes teamwork is in dire need.

Well, I can not really speak as to the feelings of the rest of the team, but Boost thinks that trust is seriously lacking.
He thinks one team member is a para-normal supremist waiting to happen. Two others he fears are homicidal (and one of those two possibly canabilistic).

The Angulus Academy group doesn't have a speedster, per se... and don't look at me, the "true" metamorph in a group with 3 others who are kinda hybrids... It's just not part of the schtick.

The team I GM for has no real speedster, but we don't miss on all that much.
With the exception of our brick, we have a very mobile team.
The team is finally gettign to the point where they know how to work as a team. They are now to the point where they have a couple of standard deployments, and have learned to improvise. They elected the brick as their leader, making them much more combat effective.
It is nice to see a team grow. Over the last two years, this team has grown from an uncoodinated bunch of rookies to a fairly well-oiled machine.

the game I GM:
they have an electrical En.Proj, and an intrusive Mentalist, and gadget-lite detective,
and a durable brick, and a flashy speedster, and a magic utility.
No Metamorph, Martial Artist, Flag-Waver, Armored Guy, real Gadgeteer, or Weapons Master. and the Shrinker quit playing.
the major NPC is half-Flag, half Spymaster.
Leadership is fair to middlin. # Teamwork only arrived after I trashed them thoroughly when they didnt do it. :whip:

We have no speedster, though we are about to gain one.
The Energy Projector has missed a number of games, and usually puts his gravity powers on Density Increse anyway, so there's another thing we're missing.
No Patriots at all.
Nor any leadership either. Perhaps those are related...
At least they are finally learning some restraint. The Martial Artist/Weapon Master remembered that he had a bo staff in addition to his katana. Those darn Samurai, they're wacky!

Most of the time it's any talent for the Arcane Arts. Not always, but quite often that character type is conspicuous in its absence.
But, there's never enough points to go around. Often the "missing link" is discovered by everyone (possibly including the GM) at a crucial moment. "Oops, we don't have any Fixit Guy to restart a spacecraft..."

The Champions of Vanouver are missing a BRICK. They have commented on several times. Mch to the GM's amusement.

Someone who can fly. We've got a speedster (flight along surface, which doesn't really count) and someone with lots of swinging (my Spiderman homage). The martial artist has a good amount of superleap and the quasi-mage has EDM and teleportation. Everyone else is pretty much earthbound.
